Is there an adapter where I can plug my nuvi into 110-v wall socket?

When I connect my 2789 to my Win 10 computer via the USB cable, the unit goes into what I call a data receive mode (ready for downloads from Garmin Express, BaseCamp, etc). This connection also charges my battery. When I want to put my GPS in navigation mode so I can play around with it, I have to unplug it from my computer, which then drains my battery in about an hour.

As an alternative, I can use the vehicle power cable and plug my GPS into the power outlet of my car. But going out to the car is often inconvenient.

Is there anyway I can draw power from my computer while in the navigation mode? I guess what I'm asking, is there a power cable that plugs into my computer USB port (rather than just the power outlet of my car)? If not, is there a 110-v adapter that I can plug my power cable into so I don't have to go out to my car to plug in my GPS?

Thanks in advance for any help/recommendations...

11O VOLT ADAPTER

I bought a charger from Garmin that plugs into a 110 volt outlet, plug usb cable into the charger than the GPS. Than the GPS goes into navigation mode. I do it all the time.

Garmin A/C Adapter

This is the Garmin recommended adapter for your 2789:

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/adapters...

There are cheaper aftermarket units out there that will work but you take a chance on their performance.

Not all computer USB ports provide enough current to power the newer GPSr's. I suppose you could find a cable that would work with a powered USB hub but I can't recommend one. Using a USB hub can also cause data transmission problems. Using a 110V adapter like the one above is the best approach.

It's not the power handling

It's not the power handling of the "wall-wort" or DC Charger that makes (or prevents) your Garmin from switching from operational mode to Computer Mode....
USB has 5 connections, but there are 2 different cables: One with 5 wires, and one with 4 wires... (4 wire USB forces Computer mode in Garmin).

It's the PINOUT of the USB Cable.... If the Garmin sees power on one of the pins, it goes into Operational Mode.... If it sees power on a different pin, it goes into Computer Mode...

When my 660's rear connector failed, (which is how 660 gets it's operational DC power), I took two different USB Cables, a 4 pin USB and 5 pin USB, cut them both in two, and by wiring the identical colored wires together, but, two of the 5 wires of the 5 pin cable are wired to one pin of the 4 pin cable, I was able to power the 660 up and operate it via the USB Connector on the side of the unit.... Which prior to this custom cable, A USB cable connected to side of 660 was only intended for Computer mode (Map & POI).
I now have 2 different cables... My spliced one for operation mode, and a regular USB (4 Pin) for Computer Mode for updating POI's....

I requested that the post I made become a "Sticky" for reference to others, as it contained specific parts list, cabling instructions, etc. , but I don't know if that was ever done...

My wife has been using this cable on the Nuvi 660 in her car for years now, and it has been 100% successful...

If you can find my post on this, it will be step by step accurate..

Garmin OEM Chargers

Member JanJ is correct the AC wall charger requires a 5 pin USB connector to go into Computer Mode. The Garmin OEM chargers put out 5v at 1.0 amps and work properly on any Nuvi devices. There are other wall chargers that may put out 2.0 amps and may work on your Nuvi but I prefer to sticking with the Garmin brand.
I would avoid any wall chargers selling on Ebay that may or may not work on your Nuvi.

The link member bdhsfz6 has provided shows it at 24.99 that includes two cables, one mini and the other is a micro cable. These will work on any Nuvi that either has a mini or micro connector on the back of the Nuvi to connect the wall charger.
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/adapters...
You can buy the Garmin 010-11478-02 AC Charger U.S. at Amazon Market Place for $13.87 with no tax when buying from the vendor. I find beneficial not to pay tax and still receive Amazon guarantee it the item can be returned free of charge if not satisfied. I recently purchased a Mirco Paper Shredder from an Amazon vendor and shipped from an Amazon warehouse. It came double boxed and I was quite satisfied with the purchase. I was happy to save the additional $13.09 tax
You can buy the wall charger here for $13.87 from GizmosForLife and Fulfilled by Amazon.

I own a Garmin OEM 5v 1.0 amp wall charger and can vouch works flawlessly on my 660 and 2460LMT Nuvi’s. I hope this may help you in making a decision.

The Factory has a way to make your post more easily findable but requesting in a forum that a message become a sticky isn't the way to go. It's on you to create a FAQ and I suggest you give it a try:

I'm looking forward to seeing it. Good luck.

Thanks to all for the

Thanks to all for the recommended AC Wall Charger (Garmin 010-11478-02). I just ordered one from B&H Photo, where I do a lot of internet purchases. The price was $15.59.....maybe not quite the cheapest, but certainly cheaper than the $29.95 that the Garmin website quoted.

Thanks again for all the good input.......

I usually use my Android

I usually use my Android phone's charging cable to charge it from wall.
So far I never had any issues.

Get the Garmin charger.

Like many folks I have many 110->USB convertors however the Garmin is the only one that will maintain the NuvCams charge when running in the simulation mode.

Good Choice

B&H Photo is a reputable dealer. If you don't live in NY you won't pay sales tax, although you also will need to pay shipping if you don't qualify for the 49.00 free shipping, the same as Amazon.
You can pay 3.50 shipping anywhere in the country if you don't buy addition items, the total will come to $19.09.

I'm sure you made a good choice, I hope you enjoy your wall charger.

I have an iPhone and iPad, and I tried both of their charging cables. They worked fine on my Garmin 3790, but not on my 2789. Hopefully the adapter I just ordered from B&H will do the trick.

These days, I buy most of my electronics from B&H Photo, and I never had an issue. I usually save up enough items ($49 worth) to get the free expedited shipping. Amazon's free shipping is not exactly expedited (normally 7 or 8 days) unless you pay for Prime, which I don't have (but probably should). With both, there is no sales tax....which I really like. Walmart is now trying to compete online with Amazon, but since Walmart has stores about everywhere, you must pay the sales tax (8% where I live).

I Forgot To Mention

Your Nuvi 2798 has one of the desirable power mounts.
These power mount models have a Mini USB connectors on them, not Micro USB connectors.
But since your newly purchased 2798 charging cables can work on either USB connectors (Mini or Micro) you can connect the wall charger directly to the power mount using the Mini USB connector.

You now have the option to charge it using the Mini USB cable to the port on the power cradle if you chose to do so.

Below is a link that shows what models have on Power Cradle Mount.

Dollar Store

Sometimes in Dollar Tree they have an adapter that plugs into the wall and takes the car charger cord.

I know the big round car charger cords are falling out of favor, and some cars don't even have that charger socket in them, but I have used this adapter many times.

Can't beat the price. grin

Just a thought

I had issues at one time where gps said this cable cannot be used. I bought on ebay a 120 volt wall charger rated at 2 Amps , solved that problem. Also if you know a little about home wiring Lowes sells a 120 Volt recepticle that has 2 normal 120 V plugs plus 2 USB ports for charging

Charger

I have successfully used an old BLACKBERRY charger and I suppose another similar charger should also work. As long as it puts out at least 1,000 Ma (1 Amp).

FYI as an alternative to special cables, they make inexpensive adapters that let you plug your car cable into a wall outlet. I have seen them on Ebay and Amazon for a little at $3.00. You can use them to plug any 12v cigarette lighter device into a wall outlet. Handy to have for travel.

https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Adapt...

You Get What You Pay For

That link shows the wall charger is for 12V cigarette plug.
The output is 300 mA, your PC puts out 500 mA when connected to Pc's USB port. just look at the feedback on Amazon, what a waste of money as far as I'm concerned.

I bought (around five years ago), a wall plug transformer with a female cigarette charger receptacle on the other end, direct from Garmin. It works like a charm and never gets "borrowed" by anyone in the family so it is always where I left it.

Don't know if they still make them though...

760 Audio Books

I have an old nüvi 760 that I love. It has audio out and plays .mp3 and .aud files. I used to travel for work and listened to many audio books through the car stereo from my nüvi. If I wanted to continue a book I was listening to when I didn't have a work trip coming up I would use the Garmin charger to power the unit and then run it through the living room stereo. Worked great and didn't run down the battery. smile

(Of course these days I would just stream it over WiFi from my phone to the stereo...)

I do too and still use it. I think these 760/770 series were very good and they turn out to be long lasting. Let's hope Garmin continues to update the maps!

Is there a 110-v to 12-v power adapter?

The question was asked...

"Is there an adapter where I can plug my nuvi into a 110-v wall socket?"

The answer is... yes.

You are lucky to have that charger since they are no longer available for sale, I couldn't find anyone selling them including Ebay. The model # is Garmin 010-10723-08

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011V1KZ6

I did find one on Amazon but it is NOT a Garmin OEM charger.
They claim it can be used with Nuvi's. The Garmin OEM charger has a 1.0 Amp output, whereas this one output is 1.5 Amps.
It is sold by Charger City.
https://www.amazon.com/ChargerCity-ReaderCompare-010-10723-0...

If it doesn't work you can return to Amazon for a refund.

I'm wondering is this charger could be useful if you have it plugged into the wall near a window. You may be able to get a signal activating the Traffic feature if it appears once locked into a signal. I know some of the newer models have the Traffic built in but I'm not sure it would work on either of older models or newer ones.

Traffic

Regardless of which NUVI I use on an external power supply, 855, 2797 or 3790 the traffic receiver works.

Had a nice surprise after

Had a nice surprise after reading this thread. Rummaging through a drawer with a managerie of old chargers (you know the drawer), I found an ac charger for an OLD Motorola flip phone (Razr, I believe), and saw that the business end looked very similar to that of my 2598. Plugged it in, and it worked fine; battery charging, traffic, etc. Boy was I surprised. Compatibility like that seems rare these days (no doubt it's just a happy accident, but I'll take it). Hope someone else can find this bit of info useful.
