nuvi 855, new map and how identified

I just updated my old nuvi 855 to the new City Navigator map, 2017.30. Since this nuvi is a backup to a backup for me and since the nuvi 8x5 series is not offered the map-update-to-SD -card option, I decided with the previous map update and this one to simply let Garmin do a regional update of the US and Canada rather than go through the clone method to install all of North America.

I wonder if anyone else has seen these two things that occurred for me:

1) When updating today to 2017.30, I wasn't warned that all of North America would not fit and that I could only do a regional update. Odder is that I wasn't given a choice of region. The update process did give me US and Canada like I had with 2017.20. Does Garmin not offer a regional choice and simply go with a repeat region that was used in the previous update?

2) When Garmin Express finished, I was told I had successfully updated to the new map with the US and Canada regions only. The size of the map file, about 2.439GB, confirms that I did not receive all of North America. But when I go to the nuvi's MapInfo page, what I see is CN North America NT 2017.30 with no mention of it just being the US and Canada. If other nuvis with limited space offer the same info, it means that when someone has a problem and starts a thread here, asking them to report what map they currently have installed may mislead us. If I reported as above that my nuvi says I have CN North America NT 2017.30, wouldn't we assume the map was all of North America? The only way to know that a regional map was installed would be to ask the file size of the gmapprom.img file.

Has anyone else had either of these results?

Well ...

1. Is normal. Indeed if you have a region selected and then want to update to the full map when there is a map update you can't. You must first update the region you have installed and only after that is updated will Express offer the full map.

2. I'm pretty sure is normal too, but as I don't have your model I can't be definite.

Good to know. Now if only I can remember this when I need it...

855 Map designation.

I just completed the update of my 855 including the full NA map and the full coverage JCV (large file copied from my 755). The Map Info is shown as CN North America NT 2017.30 [1] ALL. I am not sure what the [1] indicates, but it is in red text while the rest of the map description is in black.

To make space for the full NA map I used a thumb drive with the cloning process (modified) to complete the initial download and map install. I then had to manually copy the new/updated files from the thumb drive to the internal memory and SD card of the 855, putting the gmapprom.* map files in internal storage and the ASR, SRX and JCV files on the SD card. Everything including voice recognition and junction view works correctly with that configuration and gives me the following usage:
internal memory: 2.85 GB used, 648 MB free
SD card: 1.56 GB used

Successfully installed 2017.30 on nuvi 855

I used the procedure outlined in "Garmin Maps | Cloning Method: Install a Map Update Directly to the SD Card" (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231). Everything went smoothly, but I did need to reset the 855 for the new maps to show up in Map Info. The .img size was 2,796,290,048 bytes and appears to be the Full NA install. All I need now is to procure a copy of the Large JCV file (installed jcv is 26,367,415 bytes).

ASR file/directory question

For the ASR & SRX files did you put just the two files on the SD card or the WHOLE ASR directory?. I assume that the ASR & SRX files need to be in an Asr subdirectory the Garmin directory.

Only ASR and SRX.

The SRD files need to remain in internal memory. The ASR and SRX files can go on either internal memory or SD in folder \Garmin\ASR.

Incidentally, the reason you need to do a power-on restart (or reset as you put it) is to force the nuvi out of sleep mode, load the newly copied or installed files, and rebuild the GarminDevice.XML file. The nuvi 8xx series can be quite stubborn on not recognizing new files unless you break it out of sleep mode.
