TurboCCC: Where To menu, black dots, icons, GPI

I have tried for literally years (not an exaggeration)to get BMP map icons to show for GPI POI on my 3590LMT.

I somehow managed it about 6 months ago and now I can't remember exactly what hoops I jumped through.

It is possibly one of the most annoyingly difficult things to do yet there's no real documentation or info on how to do it. Even the TurboCCC help file is corrupt.

I have spun myself dizzy Googling for answers, testing and swearing.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone lay out exactly STEP BY STEP how I use TurboCCC (or something else) to:

* create a GPI file
* have it show in my Where To screen as a category (this I can already do)
* get an icon to show on the map with either an icon for every POI in that category, or an icon I can choose for each individual POI in that category - I don't mind which, just NOT a black dot!

I have a set of 48x48 256 colour icons. This is the same size as when I got a category to work previously so I know they work. I have a small test GPX of 5 POI. I can load it into TurboCCC. I can set the Display Symbol to the filename of the icon I want to use for each POI. The path for the icons in the preferences is correct. I have tried naming the BMP the same as the filename for both the GPX and the resulting saved GPI.

Custom POI icons

As we wait for others to respond with more help, I suggest you check out this FAQ first for the easiest way to load Custom POIs with or without Custom audio alerts and custom icons:

Note that rather than using a TurboCCC program, this faq uses Garmin's POI Loader program and will combine the csv or gpx POI file with the bmp icon when creating the gpi file sent to your nuvi.

Welcome to The Factory. Stick around and you'll learn a lot.

I have not done it in a while so I don't remember why I did what I did. Set up a folder with the GPX file to convert in it. In the same folder I also put the BMP files I want to use. There 3 of them. The one named the same as the GPX file except with a .bmp extension is what shows up on the map for each poi.

I copied the following from

I copied the following from the other forum that you posted this problem to:

i.e.

/poi/police.bmp
/gpx/police.gpx
/gpx/police.bmp

Saved:

/gpx/police.gpi

I'm not 100 % sure why you need to use Turbocc program and not just use Garmin's POIloader software but from your example I'd say you have some of your files in the wrong folder. The separate files should be stored on your computer this way:

/GPX/police.bmp - AFAIK all 3 files need to be in the same folder and they don't need to be in the GPX folder, only in the same folder and point POIloader to that folder.
/gpx/police.gpx
/gpx/police.bmp

then if you run POIloader this would be the result

Saved:

/POI/police.gpi - the GPI file would be stored in POI folder and NOT the GPX folder although I suspect the NUVI would find the gpi file in any folder as long as it's on the device.

Firt of all welcome to POI Factory.This FAQ covers the installation of the custom pois and supporting files. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 also this video may help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhhb5FPyLW0 and supporting videos at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45601

Most automotive devices will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites or custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. To view the custom POI icons, you will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.

The device will show the POI icons on the map when it has started moving or is in an active route.

POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up.

The Camper/RV 660, 760, dezl 570, 760, 770, dezlCam, Garmin Drive series, Garmin DriveAssist 50, Garmin DriveLuxe 50, Garmin DriveSmart series, nuvi 55, 56, 57, 58, 65, 66, 67, 68, 2405, 2407, 2408, 2505, 2507, 2508, 2509, 2609, 2707, 2708, 2709, 3400, 3500, 3507, 3508, nuviCam, zumo 350, 390, 395, 590, and 595 series devices will only display POI icons when you have the Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places map layer selected and are in an active route. For more information on map layers, view the article: What are map layers and how do I use them on my automotive device? https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={f5530d80-b556-11df-55a0-000000000000}

Places Along the Road or Up Ahead settings will defintely show the icons.
