BBA, I'm a veteran and I thank you for your sentiment, but I'd like to remind you that Memorial Day is the day set aside to remember those in the military who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Veterans Day, which is celebrated on November 11th, is the day when our country honors all surviving veterans. But thanks again.

Phil

Plunder | Phil,

Thank you ever for your gentle reminder of the difference and your service!

While I personally didnt get to serve, I have four (4) personal friends that gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Three of them died over seas in combat.

Two, had children born whilst they served. Every year I sent those children money on their birthdays, Christmas, and school graduations until they were each 25, signing the cards with something like,

<_name_>, I'm loving you and watching you grow from heaven,

Love Dad

Their mothers knew who did it, were fine with it and to the best of my knowledge never spilled the beans.

The fourth, returned alive and has been instititualized since 1974 never knowing where he's at, and I consider he too gave the " Ultimate Sacrifice."

When I lived closer I'd visit.

I'll soon be retired and I've been making a list of to dos, visiting him is number one on my list.

So while I understand the difference between, "Memorial Day" and "Veterans Day", my friend that's instutionalized, while still alive, in my book, fits the bill of "giving the ultimate sacrifice."

As for "Veterans Day", I'm frequently in an area that seems to have a disproportionate number of, "Homeless Vets" in the community.

I generally go out seeking to find one and take them to dinner. If I can't do that, if I can find a famly at a restraunt where one of them is in uniform, I'll have the server give me the bill to pay and have them write, "Thank you ever so much for your service --- a grateful American"

Id encourage everyone to do similar things.

Thanks for all your service!

To those who served. I was 4F because of a childhood bout of polio ... but I was thankful to those all those who served. God bless you folks!

BBA -
The World needs more people like you.

Thanks for all you have done and do for our country.

There are a lot of people that never serve in the official military but these people, including yourself, serve our country every day and in many ways.
We would not be a safe and free nation if not for all these civilians who serve our country along with the military.

Thank you, Mary

I am a Vietnam vet that served in country from 1967 to 1968. I was in the Tet offensive and but for the grace of God, would not be here today. I was in the line of fire of a mortar barrage and the way the VC were dropping the mortars, I expected the next wave would come down on my location. That barrage never came. The mortar rounds stopped. However, for the next day and a half I was pinned down by a sniper. He was finally silenced by a helicopter door gunner that had been called in and everything went uphill from there.

BBA, that was a great gesture that you performed for your friend's children. It is also a great gesture when you pick up a servicemen's tab at a restaurant. Even though you didn't physically serve in the military, I consider your service to your fellow man to be just as noble. It is people like you who make people like me proud to be an American. If more people had stood up for the Vietnam Veterans when they returned, they is a good chance that some of those people who are institutionalized may have been able to live a normal life. I believe part of the problem was the stigma that was imposed on the Vietnam vets. Again, a big THANK YOU to you.

(By the way; I lost 3 buddies in Vietnam. So, this is the day that I remember them and truly appreciate their sacrifice.)

two things

Please, I just gave an explination of how I think and feel, albit, from the heart, it's not for me, rather those that have everything!

Second, just listened to the President's talk. Then of course they played Taps. I always knew the song as "Day is done."
