Plugging in my Nuvi

I have a question about something which always seems to happen when I plug in a GPS into a USB port on my computer.

Very often I get a message "Do you want to scan and fix this attached drive"?

I have always just ignored and cancelled this message but I am wondering if I am doing this right?

I can only speak for myself, I do not, I cancel out of it and continue with what I intended to do. I haven't experienced any problems. I do, if the option is available, safely remove the GPS though.

This has been mentioned a few times before, but usually within another thread so I can only point to a very old thread on the subject :

IIRC the very lengthy "Windows 10" thread had this discussion within it.

The error

The error message is usually displayed when there is an error on the drive. In this case either the Nuvi internal drive or on the SD card , if installed in the Nuvi. These errors could be some corrupted data or files. You will normally get this message if you have removed the USB drive abruptly without clicking “safely remove this device”.

There are a couple of things you can do to fix and/or get rid of this message:

1. If you have a Nuvi that, by default, is in MTP mode then I don't think you will ever see this message. If you have changed the default from MTP to Mass Storage mode you can certainly get this message from disconnecting your Nuvi and leaving a small piece of data assigned properly.

2. If you already are getting this message it will offer you option to scan the drive and repair it. This sounds a lot more scary than it is as, at least I am always afraid of what piece of data is going to get deleted fixing this issue. On the other hand I've been working with DOS/Windows based computers for over 20 years and can't recall a single instance where I lost anything by allowing the OS to scan and fix the types of problems which cause this error to appear. In fact it's normally a 64 bit piece of data that gets saved to the root of the scanned disk and seems to never be anything of importance.

Since I copy files such as the large JCV file etc my Garmin's are in the Mass Storage mode.
Before disconnecting anything from a USB port I always do the safe removal routine.
Next time this happens I'll follow your suggestion and let it do a scan and fix to see what will happen.
If worst ever came to worst I have complete back-ups for my 855, now my daughters 3790 and my 2797.
Thx

Not completely true.

I get that error if I have a flash drive I'm working on in a XP computer, safely remove it, then put it in to a Win 7 computer. I always safely remove and still get the error. My 2460 gets it intermittantly when going between XP and Win 7 also. I don't allow the OS to fix it and have never had an issue.

Always get it

Always get this message on connecting the nuvi. I always disconnect the nuvi properly. I tried to get rid of it using Autoplay Settings but it did not work.

How can we get rid of this? If Windows ever "fixes" the drive (nuvi) we are in trouble.

Solution

Let Windows fix the drive.

Yes, I'm serious. I have never had a single issue with Windows running a chkdsk on the nüvi, which is what Windows asks to do when the prompt appears. The two things chkdsk attempts to do are to check for corruption in the file system and to check for invalid file name pointers. It corrects them and lets you get on with your business.

For the short amount of time it takes to simply let Windows do its job, all this angst over what it's doing is a waste of both time and energy.

The

The windows scan and fix message that the OP is getting has been around since the DOS days. If he want to get rid of the message and has a good backup then he can just click in the right place on the message when it appears and the Scan and Fix process will fix the issue. My experience has been that having a good backup isn't really required but your better to safe than sorry. If he doesn't want to clear the message then he doesn't have to have windows fix it. Personally I find it annoying and after seeing it a couple of times I just have Windows Scan and Fix.

Microsoft says that the message comes up because of not safely removing the device (which can be either the Nuvi or the SD card) but there are probably other reasons as well. All I'm saying is that the Scan and Fix option on the error message will clear this up, probably 999 times out of 1000.

It's probably your anti-virus product.

I get the same message when I plug in my 1450. I have Kaspersky anti-virus and that's what queries me whether I want to scan the device that was just plugged in. At least in my case, it's perfectly normal operation by Kaspersky.

I think

I think what Kapersky is asking is to scan the drive for viruses, and that kind of thing. As far as I can tell, the OP's message is the normal DOS/Windows message that you can get no matter what anti virus software your using or even if you don't have any anti virus software at all.

The message the OP is getting is, as Strephon_Alkhalikoi says:

Corruption in the file system and/or invalid file name pointers.

I have and use a Nuvi 2689 now, have not had the message alluded to in the OP, BUT, I used to get it on my 2460 when I had Windows 7, the message did not appear every time, but it did appear even though I always use the safely remove hardware to dismount. The first few times I let the OS fix it, since I kept getting the message from time to time I stopped allowing the fix as I alluded to in my first post. I never saw a problem, or difference, whether I allowed it or not.

Never let Window "scan" or "fix" your nuvi. There's no need to.

Just ignore/bypass the message. It does not indicate that anything is wrong with your nuvi.

Thanks MM!

Does anybody know how we can stop Windows from doing this?

I have always disconnected the nuvi properly with "safely remove hardware." I have gone into "Autoplay" and disabled everything.
It is still offering to scan and fix. Maybe it is safe to let it scan, but where is the guarantee? It is an annoyance and we need to make it go away.

Just do it

As already said just go ahead and let it happen. I've seen it occasionally and letting Windows do its thing has never caused an issue for me.

My old 660 has had this for many years now...
the directory path is horribly scrambled....
It still works as a GPS.... I can Update POI's, and I run Maps off of the 16GB SD Card (that also shouldn't work, but that's another story) but I've been unable to do a GPS backup because of the corrupted FAT table of the internal memory...

And I just don't have the courage to let Chkdsk continue.... So, I just keep continuing as if nothing were wrong!!!

Since then the rear interface died, and I got 660 going by making a custom USB cable that will power the unit, as opposed to going into the computer update mode.... Of course with rear interface not functional, I lost the Traffic receiver interconnect, but the GPS and POI's still work... So -- "WHAT, ME WORRY?"

It's been approximately 6 years since the directory path was scrambled,So I'm running on limping Directory Paths, and part of hardware interface and 2 years or so since rear interface has died, but the 660 doesn't care... It still works....

And it has a new battery in it, so it should last for many more years..... Talk about getting your moneny's worth!!!!!
