Whats up with this update? >solved....kinda<

My 3790 and my 2598 show having an time zone map update through Garmin Express. For the life of me I can't figure out why it keeps giving me "There was an error installing the update. WebUpdater doesn't show any updates at all.

That

That could be because WebUpdater doesn't do map updates and the time zone data is a map file (gmaptz.img)

A bit cryptic as an answer. Do you care to elaborate and help the OP?

Really

Really not sure what's cryptic as the OP is having a problem with the TIME ZONE MAP update notification/installation and one place he has looked was WebUpdater. He said WebUpdater doesn't show any updates and I simply reminded him that WebUpdater will never show map updates.

All the parts are there without a lot of extraneous verbiage.

Question: Web updater doesn't show any wupdates

Answer: Web updater doesn't update maps.
Explanation: The time zone update is a map.

Its not all there, if it was then i would have my answer.
The only answer i got is for a question i didn't ask. Webupdater doesn't do maps and time zone is a map......yep that solves it all.

.

I agree with Speed2 and Jale. Op's question was not answered. This place use to be a great place to get answers. Not lately. A lot of smart aleck remarks has become the norm unfortunately.

Gotta love a good update.

gmaptz.img

Does your gmaptz.img file in the .system folder show the date that you tried the update or an older date? The size of the updated gmaptz.img is 566 KB (579,584 bytes).

It is possible that the timezone map file is being updated but for some reason the \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml file is not reflecting the upated version. If you open GarminDevice.xml, a little over half way down in the file you should see a segment that looks something like this:

-<UpdateFile>
<PartNumber>006-D1074-00</PartNumber>
<Version><Major>17</Major><Minor>0</Minor></Version><Path>.System</Path>
<FileName>gmaptz.img</FileName>
</UpdateFile>

If you think the problem might be with GarminDevice.xml, you could try deleting this file, then reboot your nuvi forcing it to make a fresh copy of the file.

The only other thing I can think of to try is to delete gmaptz.img, then try the update again. Make a backup of the file first (of course), just in case. If that doesn't work, delete gmaptz.img again and try a map reinstall.

And of course there is always the option to call Garmin customer support.

gmaptz.img

Thanks Alan. Deleting the *.xml file did not work. Not sure if one actually needs the gmaptz.img file. The unit seemed to run fine with out it and Express did not notice it missing. I'm going to reinstall the Map. Both of my units with the same issue? What i could also do if this persists is restore to original and see if express wants to update that file. Express is seeing the time zone file as a separate d/l, along with the option of a map reinstall.

running without TZ file.

I do think the device will work fine without the gmaptz.img file until your travels take you across time zones ... then I would expect that the time will not automatically update to the new time zone. Many older nuvi's like my 855 don't support this feature, so when you cross time zones you need to manually change the time settings to get the proper time.

What did you see for file date and size on the gmaptz.img file before you deleted it?

I agree that it is strange that you are getting the same issue on two different devices of different generations. Go figure.

I wonder what would happen if you manually copied the gmaptz.img 17.0 file to your nuvi, then did a power on reset to force GarminDevice.xml to regenerate? I would be happy to send the file as an email attachment if you want to PM your email address to me. I think a 566 KB attachment should email OK.

No gmaptz.img file after reinstalling the Map. Never replaced it.
Still showing an update, but now i have some grayed out texts, the bold is as before. Lets hold off on that file for now. I want to still restore to original first. I'm still thinking its a bit strange both units having the same issue. One is 6 years old and the other 3.

more stuff

Gonna be a while till i get some time. Uninstalled express and now
and i can't install it again. Garmin device interaction service can't start. Something about not having enough privileges. I checked the service.msc file and i have full control over it. I'll spend some time on it tomorrow.

Doesn't sound good right now. Hope things get fixed soon

Update that doesn't seem to do anything

I have seen this update offered to me on the 2595 from time to time. I always assumed it was for locations outside of the USA since we only have 4 time zones (Continental) and as far as I know they have never changed. I think I took it once and have declined it since.

WOW!!

WOW!!

???

Hmm. No idea why all this was happening, and no i didn't have a Virus either. Everything was working just fine from my Adobe to my Office. I had full privileges and no locks on any of my Directory's, but Express went from not updating a time zone file to not being able to install it after removing it. I even went into the registry and cleaned everything out except the usbstor stuff. Not enough patience anymore in my old age to waste any more time on this so in the end i used my ghost file and just reloaded win7-64. Now it worked, file is updated. Not sure what i had of done if it didn't work. Phoning Garmin for Tech help doesn't sit well with me. Thanks for the help.
