Nuvi 2599 / 2699 LMT

I'd like to upgrade from my Nuvi 1490LMT. I've seen some excellent pricing on factory refurbished Nuvi 2599LMT and 2699LMT.

Looking for comments / advice on these units...I know difference between two models is the screen size 5 vs 6".

What I'm most interested in is comments on "glass" pinch & zoom screen these models have as opposed to dull touch screen on my Nuvi 1490. Does the glass screen make makes, etc. look sharper / more vivid like glass screen on smartphones or does glass screen appear as one huge reflecting surface in bright light making everything that much more difficult to read ?

Any other comments / reviews of these units will be appreciated.

Glass screen

I have not seen the 2x99 devices, but the glass screen on my 3597 is wonderful ... bright clear and sharp. The touch operations are intuitive and accurate.

Thx for your feedback. I was concerned screen might look like a mirror. BTW,,,do you know if screen is Gorilla glass like that used on a lot of smartphones ? Verry durable.

Glass screen

The surface is very shiny and can cause reflections, but has not caused a problem for me because the good brightness offsets the reflections and doesn't seem to wash out in bright light as bad as my old Garmins with plastic screens. I have been able to overcome the reflections with simple angle adjustments.

I think I read somewhere that it is Gorilla glass, but can't find that reference. It is glass though, so it is more susceptible to breakage than the non glass screens if it dropped on a hard surface.

screen protector

Screen protectors are available for all GPSs. They come in both gloss and matt finish. I am using the matt version on the 3597, and the touchscreen works fine.

Can anyone comment on the battery life of the 2599LMT vs. the 2699LMT?

Well,

A 6" screen will drain the battery faster than a 5" screen but then these units aren't designed to run from internal batteries. The battery is primarily there to allow software updates to run.

If you are not using PoiLoader to install custom pois to the computer and then pasting the resulting gpi file to the gps.You are not doing it correctly and will not see custom pois on your device. On the Tom Tom you could do that with that file structure but not on the Garmin. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for installing custom Poi's. You may want to look at this also http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41416

I see you just recently came on board.

Welcome to the POI Factory Forum site.
Be sure to check out the FAQ tab located on top right of the screen and check out all the custom poi files that are available for download to your GPS. To get started here are some tools you will need.
1.Make a complete backup of your GPS files. Members have reported that their GPS files have been accidentally deleted lost or damaged. Some errors even resulted from updating new software. So it is important to have your backup files ready so that you can restore your device back to its prior status. Here is a video that may help.
Video 1. How to make a backup of your Garmin GPS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv0w8lNNHYg
2.Download Owners manual. https://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/searchManuals.fac... . To be aware of all the settings and features available for your device. For discontinued models select “Discontinue” for “Choose a Subcategory”.
3.POI Loader http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-999... .Garmin's software for uploading POI files to your Garmin device. Needed for all the POI Factory custom poi files you may want to install.
4.Garmin Express http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html .Garmin Express is the main tool for updating and managing all your Garmin devices. Such as updating maps, software and registering your unit with Garmin.
5.WebUpdater http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp WebUpdater used to update certain device software without needing an Internet web browser. For downloading and installing software, vehicles and voice updates to your device. Always make sure your GPS has the latest software.

You may be seeing favorites

You may be seeing favorites and internal pois but not custom pois. On your device toush custom pois and see if anything is there? Look in youir manual under Custom Points Of Interest. You can find it using the index tab.It explains the requirements.

You do not specify where you got the files you have mentioned, but I am assuming that they were not from poi-factory because some of them are not available on our site.

However, if you take any .gpx file and copy it to any place on your Garmin device or to the SD card in your device, it will - upon the next boot - be read and saved into "Favorites/Saved Places".

This is not true of .csv files.

Most of us would recommend using POI Loader to place POIs onto the device.

You installed them as Favorites (saved places), not Custom POI's. If that fits your purpose it works fine. But there are differences between Favorites and Custom POI's and each have their own characteristics and purposes.

Custom pois

I suspect he has a large amout of Saved places(favorites) now in the device. If he goes to Where To and looks for Custom Poi's icon and touches it the mystery would be solved.

On the old models the custom poi icon would not show unless custom poi files were installed.Believe newer models it shows regardless.

If OP decides he would prefer to have custom pois and do away with all or some of the Saved Places(favorites).See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40052

It's also important to note ..

It's also important to note that the direct copy method will work for importing favorites (saved places) as long as the source file is a .GPX file. POI Loader must be used with .CSV source files.

And one more point ... you should delete the .gpx source files from your device after your saved places have been imported. Otherwise you will not be able to delete individual places. They will just be re-imported the next time you boot your device.

Files in POI Folder

The first thing the OP needs to do is to go into the POI folder on the device. The location that he pasted the file copies and delete all of them. Then tackle deleting the favorites since they will still showing as saved places.

Even if gaz132 is happy with these appearing as Favorites (Saved Places) rather than Custom POIs, note that gaz's device will accept a maximum of 1000 locations this way. As others have already recommended, I suggest using POI Loader and loading them as true Custom POIs which do not have the 1000 maximum limit.

either one

Either the 5 inch or the 6 - both good. They have that vivid screen like a smartphone - so bright that glare is not an issue. The battery life is not a factor because they are meant to run on 12 volts in the car. The bright screen means short battery life while navigating away from the car.

Thanks everyone for all you helpful info
I am over 60 and all this is new and sounds complicated
Never had a Garmin before
I only had the Tomtom to help me to drive to Mallorca
Now I have upgraded to the 2599LMTD and found what it is capable of doing - I want to customise it to the max.
It will get the old grey brain tissue working again hopefully x

The POIs I got from the Garmin website I think.

Thanks again everyone

Not clear on what you are posting. Using Poiloader to install a csv or a gpx file to your computer converts it to a Gpi file that you can copy and pate in the POI Folder on the device and it will load as a custom poi.Just putting a gpx file in the POI Folder on the device without using PoiLoder will load as a Saved Place(Favorite). Two different items.

This is what the poster posted http://pages.citebite.com/c5y1j4r6d9fhr .Not a single POI but files in the POI Folder.

GPI vs GPX

I suppose it is possible that someone in the UK is distributing Custom POI's in .gpi format, in which case I understand what sussamb is saying ... no need to use POI Loader, just copy the .gpi file to your Garmin. The POI download sites I have run across always distribute the POI source files in .csv or .gpx format and in that case you need POI Loader as Charlie said.

gpi gpx all double-dutch to

gpi gpx all double-dutch to me.

All I know is the poi loader would not see the files on my Computer so I thought bugger it and copied them and paste to the Garmin (Internal Storage Folder) POI Folder (it already had a few files called 'cyclops' in there already)

It is not immediately obvious that POI Loader needs to be pointed to a FOLDER which contains the files that one wishes for it to convert into Custom POIs. If you try to point to a "File" it will not respond.

Most of us use some generic name for this folder, like MyPOIs. However, if you look at
How do you set up and load custom POIs with or without categories
there is lots of information how to organize Custom POIs to your liking.

Just curious about the files

Just curious about the files you listed and put into the POI Folder for the GPS device.

When you look into the POI Folder and see these files. What is the extension showing for each file. Example only Argos.csv Toby Carvery.gpx. . Or do all of them have file names listed above with.gpi at the end.

.gpi files can be copy and paste to POI Folder direct

.gpx files needs the POI-loader software

.csv files needs the POI-loader software

Paste .GPI files

Off-topic - apologies to cruisefor2!

A concern about routinely pasting .gpi files into a folder in the GPS would be the possibility of accidentally damaging the files needed to run the GPS or even bricking it. (Our slang here for damaging the device beyond repair) This would be a slight risk for experienced users, but newbies are more likely to fail at this.

The use of POI Loader to create and load .gpi files into the GPS eliminates the possibility of damaging its internal file structure.
