My Mapsource has Gone Blind

I'm starting to use Basecamp, but I still like Mapsource. However, my Mapsource program no longer shows the installed Garmin CNNA maps in the map selection menu bar. It's done it for years but has suddenly decided to go blind. Basecamp shows them with no problem in it's map selection menu bar.

I've uninstalled Mapsource, downloaded it, and reinstalled it (twice) but to no avail. When I clicked on "Manage Map Products" in the Utilities tab, all of the maps are listed as being there and are flagged as unlocked. So, any ideas why they don't show up on the main screen's map selection bar?

Thank you for any suggestions you might offer.

I had the same problem with

I had the same problem with the resent map download so, I downloaded the map again and it showed up in Mapsource. Hope this helps.

Win 8?

It might help diagnose the problem if you state what OS you are using and if you upgraded any software recently.

There are posts in other forums from users of Win 8.x who have this issue with both Mapsource and Basecamp. Unfortunately, no clear cut solution has been offered.

Do a complete system backup. Then Try disabling your anti virus software and download Mapsource again. Some anti virus programs limit changes to the Win sys registry. Delete the old version of Mapsource first and make sure Basecamp is NOT running while you do this.

Another possibility, although a bit more complicated, is to go to gpsfiledepot.com. and check out the forum. It's a trusted site I've been using for years.

Try downloading a free topo trail map and see if it shows up on your Mapsource map list. http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53

The file contains a "fix" that has helped others with similar problems. You may want to check out some of the tutorials and forum posts first until you are comfortable with the process.

Unfortunately, there is no straight forward easy solution to the problem that I have found.

For Complete Uninstalls

I have recently read several posts where someone was having a problem and uninstalled - then reinstalled - a Garmin program. I want to offer some software that does an excellent job of cleaning up registry entries and folders/files that are left behind by the Control Panel uninstall of software. Recall that windows does an uninstall based on the uninstaller that is part of the software package being uninstalled - nothing more.

Revo Uninstaller can be downloaded as freeware which is also portable - meaning that Revo Uninstaller is not "installed" in the typical fashion of putting entries into the Windows Registry. Lots of irony here in that a non-installed program is uninstalling other programs.

One source for Revo Uninstaller is
http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=revo&m=
A Pro version is available with many more features, including greater 64-bit compatibility, but the free version is fully functional.

You should download the zip file to some folder; unzip the download into that same folder (and then delete the zip file to "clean up" because this Zip file is now "leftover").

When you launch revouninstaller.exe it will list the installed programs on your computer.

This might be a good time to scan this list to see if you recognize all of the software Revo found. If you have never used Revo, I'll bet that you will find a bunch of software that you do not recognize and have never used. You might come back to these later.

But, let's say you are wanting to uninstall MapSource and get a new, clean install of the latest MapSource. Right click on MapSource; answer "yes" that you want to uninstall it; then choose the "advanced" mode and let Revo do its thing.

After Revo uninstalls the software it will search for registry entries that might be left behind and let you delete them; then, it will look for folders/files left behind and let you delete them.

Thankyou, Gentlemen

for your replies.

I followed jgermann's suggestion and did the Mapsource uninstall using Revo, followed by a normal reinstall.
That fixed whatever the problem was. Mapsource is now running as designed.

+1 for Revo Uninstaller

One of the best programs.
