Install city navigator Europe NT to computer

I have downloaded city navigator Europe NT from Garmin and it installed on my Nuvi 1490. I can only access the maps on this install if I have the unit plugged into the computer. Is there a way to install the map on the computer and not have to have the unit plugged into the computer?

Using

Using Garmin Express, attach your GPS to your computer and open GE. Once your 1490 is recognized by GE, you will see the current installed map name listed under Maps in the "Software Updates Available" section of GE's windows. Below Maps you will see the button that reads "Map Options", click on that button.

When the "Map Options" page opens, click on "Install to Computer" at the bottom of the screen.

Once the download of the maps to your computer is completed you will be able to use GE, with the current maps, and without having your Nuvi attached to the computer.

For future updates, be sure to click on "Map Options" prior to downloading the update to your Nuvi. On the Map Options screen you will be able to instruct GE to install the new maps onto your Nuvi and computer in one operation.

disconnecting gps

Be sure to keep GPS connected during update process. In theory once updater gets form device that maps are unlocked they should be unlocked on computer too. But it may happen, that after disconnecting GPS during update, maps may be locked when you try access them on computer.

It shouldn't happen, but Garmin software works sometimes in mysterious ways wink

Safe eject

Always safe eject your device. Provided you do that there won't be any problems.

That's probably still a good idea, but isn't this a non issue now with newer devices in MTP mode? I know the OP has an older model that should be safely ejected but just wanted to clear that up for newer models.

When I open Garmin Express

When I open Garmin Express it doesn't show the Europe map as being installed even though when I open BaseCamp it is there and I can access the maps on screen. The map is unlocked and shows in my list of "maps" in the menu in BaseCamp. I look at maps installed to this unit( Nuvi 1490) and the Europe may is there along with the latest North American map.

Below the menu bar in BaseCamp I get this message.

"The device containing City Navigator Europe NT 2016.2 is connected with limited speed. This may effect the performance of BaseCamp"

Now it is not a computer issue as I get this same message on 3 different computers I have had the unit connected to. The GPS unit is up to date and otherwise works great. I have a second unit that I installed the Europe maps to and I get the same message when it is used.

I had Garmin support do a remote session and found nothing wrong with the unit or the computer it is connected to. They have no idea at this point why I get the message of slow speed. Sine I am unable to install the map to my computer it is like molasses trying to do any kind of routing. I was told by the support guy a new version of BaseCamp was on the way but no date for the release of it was available at this time.

I always do the eject device when unhooking the unit from the computer.

Yes but ... !

Agreed if the device is in mtp mode, but we're often explaining to folks how to put the newer devices into mass storage mode so they're able to see the .system folder. Mine for example are kept in mass storage mode.

I just think therefore to be completely safe do a safe eject smile

You'll get that message if BC is accessing the map on your device. IF the maps are also on your PC check the ones shown in the drop down list and select the correct one.

Having said that when I do select maps on my GPS Basecamp still isn't 'slow'.

That's the problem the Europe map is not on my pc.

That's not a problem ...

Just install it. Open Express and select your device if listed. You don't even need your device connected. Choose Map options and then Install to computer. Done.

If that's not possible how did you get the EU map onto your nuvi?

I purchased the download from Garmin. The download went directly to the nuvi so that is how it got there. They told me it couldn't be installed to the computer but I am not sure that is correct but as I have said it is on the nuvi but it doesn't show up in Garmin Express when the unit is plugged in only the North American maps show there. Have you or anyone else installed the Europe may to your computer? If you have the Europe maps installed on your unit hook it up and see if Garmin Express shows it.

That's the issue

Downloads like that from Garmin cannot be installed to your computer. I'm surprised Garmin Support didn't explain that to you.

What you can do though is create a virtual drive on your computer and copy the map files to that. Then you won't need to have your nuvi connected

They did tell him.

Seems like they did.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Yep ...

I read that bit but it seems they also spent ages going through his computer, why I have no idea as it can't be done smile

They should also know why he's getting that message about limited speed ... as it's perfectly normal.

Anyway, his way forward is to do as I suggest.

I have been told you can't

I have been told you can't do things before only to find that there are individuals like there are here on this forum that find a way that it can be done. I was hoping to find that person. I have tried doing the clone drive with with Slysoft virtual clone drive but keep getting image file is corrupt. This is Garmin's problem and they are supposedly working on it I was just hoping to find a another way around it.

Sorry

But Garmin won't be working around it as you say. You could do as I say, or copy the map files to a SD card or memory stick and use those instead of your nuvi.

If you don't you will need to plug in your device every time you wish to use the EU maps in BaseCamp.

I have copied them to a stick but every time I try to mount them I get a message saying the file may be corrupted. This I explained to Garmin also but with no resolve.

Maybe

maybe it is? I've never heard of anyone having issues reading maps into Basecamp off a stick/card if it's been done correctly. Have you tried that stick in another computer? Is it formatted FAT32?

Let's get some details so we have a better understanding of what has happened. Would you please do this:
1. Attach the stick to the computer
2. In a Windows Explorer window, find the stick in the left pane where it will be listed as a Drive (say F:)
3. Right click on that drive and click Properties

Now report to us from the Properties dialog that appears
A. File System
B. Used Space
C: Free Space

Thanks

Finally got stick to mount and speed is faster but not a fast as it could be. This is the latest Europe map NT 20.16.2 Since I am going there to follow my fathers WWII foot steps I am interested in the many WWII memorials but few if any are listed in the search in the areas where I know they are and Google Maps shows them. When I do a search for the actual address of the memorial BC says can't be found. I still believe my downloaded file is not complete and they claim they are working on it but for $100 it is a big disappointment to not have it work correctly.
I know I am venting here but it is frustrating to not have something work the way it should.

Current location?

It sounds like you're outside of Europe right now and trying to use the Europe map to do some routing. I'm not sure of this because your account info offers no clue as to where you are and what devices you use. The folks at Garmin tech support may not have made this connection yet if indeed you're outside of Europe right now trying to use the European map.

I think we had this issue arise before and found that things don't work well when you're in the US now trying to route or find built in POIs or addresses with the map of Europe to its built-in POI locations. Does anyone else remember this? Was it possible to get things to function in the US by putting the device in simulator mode and do a SET LOC to a place in Europe? Alternately, once you arrive in Europe (if you're not there now) and fire up the nuvi to know where it is, all may function well in your WWII locations quest.

Let us know.

And please, if anyone can remember the old thread about using the City Nav Europe map to find POIs while the device is in the USA, speak now.

Device vs BaseCamp.

I know what you are saying is an issue CraigW if you are searching on the device itself. I am not sure about BaseCamp though. Hopefully our friend sussamb might be able to shed some light on this. He is a moderator on the Garmin forums and has answered a lot of Base Camp questions on that forum.

It is possible that the POI's that the OP is searching for are not in the map data base. Also, the Base Camp search system is a little quirky IMO.

Got some examples

Perhaps you could give me some examples and I'll check them out and get back to you. It's more than likely the POIs simply aren't there and often searching for addresses in some European countries can be tricky as they don't follow 'normal' US and UK rules.

I had been thinking the same thing. If gnico could offer a half dozen or so locations to someone with City Nav Europe and BaseCamp, we might be more able to help.

When working with my Europe map in the US

There is a post somewhere on here when I was working with my Nuvi and BaseCamp and the Europe Map. In BaseCamp I could see my POIs but on the Nuvi I could not find them after I downloaded them to the Nuvi.
It turned out that on the my Nuvi itself you can not see POIs from a certain distance and I was trying to see some that far away but can't remember the distance.
The POIs did work on the Europe Map on BaseCamp but wouldn't work on my Nuvi. Someone, can't remember who, here put my POIs on their unit and they were closer and they did show up on their unit.
Remember, my memory is old and I may be remembering this incorrectly but whoever helped me may remember.
Mary

EDIT: OK so I am old and I just read some of the above text and you are not talking about what I was trying to do. Sorry...Like I said I am old smile
