Backing up Nuvi 2598

Hi all.

I just received my refurbished Nuvi 2598 and want to make a back up. I'm using Firefox and Win. 10. How can I do this? Before I used IE but this is not the same. Thanks for your help.

Install Garmin Express

There is a handy feature on there to easily do a backup of your nuvi 2598 and a restore if you should need it. Works fine. Used it for my nuvi 2598 recently.

Nuvi 3597 LMT

Thanks.

I will try that.

Please note ...

Garmin Express backs up favorites, routes, etc, but is not a full backup of the entire device. You are much better off doing a full backup as described n our FAQs: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

Backup

Garmin Express will not back up all your files for your unit. See post http://www.poi-factory.com/node/38598.

I done a video on doing a backup for your gps. Nothing fancy see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv0w8lNNHYg

Great video Charlie

A picture is worth a 1000 words & many times much easier in comprehending and understanding.

I certainly would have appreciated seeing a video of this type when I first got my GPS a few years ago and had a difficult time knowing where to download the sox file & then renaming the file extensions confused

If you remember correctly you had kindly sent me the speed & RLC file by email in order for it to work and that I could visually see how it was done. redface

On a positive note thanks to you and the other top notch gurus around here I've learned alot and still learning to this day grin

System backups

I have been using a program called "Cobian Backup 11" to backup my computer's data. I backup to a 32 gig microSD card. Recently I decided to try using this program to backup my 750 and 3790. It takes a while but works like a champ and the program is freeware. Do a search for "Cobian Backup 11".

,system folder?

Does it back up the .system folder on your 3790?

Yes

It does backup the .system folder.

Thanks

I'll give it a try ...

@jackj180

I assume that Cobian requires that the nuvi be in mass storage mode - or conversely, if the unit is in MTP mode, it will not recognize the .system folder. Would that be correct?

Mode?

When I plug my computer's USB cable directly into my 3597 it goes into the mode I need to transfer files between it and my computer. That is the mode I'm using to back up the device. When I plug into the mount instead, my computer can not see the files on the device so naturally it can't do a backup.

Instead of arguing or trying to trip me up, plug your computer into your GPS, open Windows Explorer and see if your GPS shows up as a drive or not. If not then you won't be able to do a backup.

Wasn't trying to trip you up

@jackj180, I apologize. I was not trying to trip you up. I was wondering if Cobian Backup 11 did anything unique with devices that are - on my computer - treated as "Portable Devices" in MTP mode.

If I right-click on my 2595 (when in MTP mode it shows up "Nuvi 2595" but without a following drive letter), I can have Explorer copy the contents of "Internal Storage" to, say, the USB drive I keep attached to my computer. If someone did the same, they might think that they had done a complete backup when they had only done a small portion of the contents. Right-clicking on "Internal Storage" and selecting "Properties" shows a total of 5.20 GB. However, after copying the contents to my F: drive, the properties of"Internal Storage" there only shows 231 MB.

What prompted my question was a concern for new members who might be reading this thread (although I looked and everyone who has currently commented has been here a while). In order to do a complete backup, they must have switched a MTP device to Mass Storage. And, in order to know that they need to switch to MS, they almost all need to be told by us to do so.

I do not know of any nuvis that came with a manual. People learn they can get a manual when they visit this site and take the time to go through the "learn" link in the upper right pane. Assuming they get a manual, they might learn about MTP mode by reading from cover to cover but "MTP" is not in the Table of Contents or the Index. Interestingly, the manual for my 2595 (which also covers the nuvi 2405 2415 2445 2455 2475 2495 2505 2515 2545 2545 2555 2565 nuvis as well) does not mention MTP at all.

When I put my 2595 back into MTP mode, attached it to my computer, and fired up my "portable" Cobian (ver 9.5.0.201), it did not show the device at all (even though my Windows Explorer had it as a "Portable Device"). I did not want to install Cobian 11 to find out if the latest and installed version acted like Explorer so I asked my question.

Sorry

Sorry if I came across as paranoid, I need to read what I write before I post it.

But as I said, if your GPS does not show up as a drive then Cobian won't be able to back it up. The easiest way I know to check is to look for a drive letter, either using Explorer or Computer under the Start menu (at least in Windows 7). I guess I need to say it: Don't back up your map. It would be a waste of time and space since the map is available from Garmin.

Interesting

You are probable correct - hadn't thought about it that way. My guess is that GarminDevice.xml is what GE uses to determine what to do.

Since I just make an .iso of the device, I will likely continue doing so, but that is a couple of gig taking up space
