Is this going to change the availability of HERE?

Looking at who bought it, my first thought is that they plan to make HERE a product that is available only on their vehicles. Is that mentioned in the announcement?

Garmin's contract with HERE expires about the same time as the takeover and I don't believe any announcement has yet been made about any new deal between Garmin and HERE. That being said a new map update has just been released in Europe and we expect one in NA soon so there doesn't seem to be any immediate problem. I can't imagine Garmin will get stuck with millions of GPS units with no map update path so we will just have to wait for an announcement from them.

If it's not HERE, will it now be THERE? Just kidding. Couldn't resist.

I have always thought "Here" was a dumb name for a map product. Since you are already "here", you certainly don't need a map to get to where you are. So, "There" would make more sense.

Really, I think Navteq was a better name ... some marketing firm probably needs to be fired.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be a catastrophe....

It doesn't appear from anything I have read that anything is going to change much and should stay pretty much as it has for the last few years with the way the company will be run.
