Garmin Nuvi 2699 with 2017.30 Maps

GE just prompted that My

GE just prompted that My 2689 needed both an V8.20 upgrade and a Map upgrade...

I understand OS Ver upgrade, but seeing that I watch for map upgrades, (For both 2689 and 660) and GE didn't prompt the 660 needed a map upgrade, just the 2689, my next question is why the map upgrade?

I started the upgrade, and finished making breakfast... When I got back it said everything was up to date.. and when I powered it up I got the normal after Firmware and Map multiple resets...

Was that part of the V8.20 also?

Different map

Assuming you're talking about the new EU map your 660 needs the NT version, and there is no NT version for CN EU 2016.30. That's why you only got the map updates for your newer nuvi, as that uses the NTU version.

I'm not understanding your post...

I don't understand what an EU map is, nor NT Version of CN EU Map?

In the past, when a map upgrade has occurred, GE Prompted that 660 and 2689 BOTH indicated a map was available... at the same time.

Thanks for spoon feeding the answer..... smile!
P.S. I'm in USA, in case EU is Europe

Sussamb is listed as being in the UK, pretty sure he's talking about European maps.

Ah OK. In Europe it wouldn't be unusual for older nuvis not to have a map update at different times to newer ones as they use different versions of the map. As you're in the US why it's happening for you I have no idea smile

Again why the map 2689

Again why the map 2689 upgrade in conjunction with the Firmware instead of both 2689 & 660 Map upgrade??

2689

I updated my 2689 today, the maps were already up to date (v2016.20), only firmware updated. (although the "Hardware" number changed?)

Numbers that changed, before and after:

Hardware Version before: V5 M4v3 8GB DS128 A6 MFi RDS

Hardware Version after: V5 M4v3 8GB DS128 A6 BT RDS

Software Version before: 7.80

Software Version after: 8.20

Audio Version before: 2.10 (American English-Samantha)

Audio Version after: 2.20 (American English-Samantha)

Text Version before: 7.80 (American English)

Text Version after: 8.20 (American English)

FMI before: 3.1

FMI after: 3.5

Everything else stayed the same.

In short. If in map name you see letters below that means:
- EU - maps of Europe
- NA - maps of North America
- NT - maps in older format, for older units
- NTU - maps in newer format, that can use in foreign names letters specific for appropriate language.

As for now, maps are released in formats NT and NTU, but version NT is to be released only twice a year, when NTU (I guess) about 3-4 times a year.

NA maps are released in NT version as well, but I'm not sure about NTU version, as I don't have unit that can use it. That's whole mystery.

@ grzesja

I believe what you've just shared with us would be an interesting/informative FAQ wink

No NA NTU version

AFAIK, to date Garmin has only produces NT versions for City Navigator North America. I suppose that may change in the future.

So the newer units (2689)

So the newer units (2689) get map upgrades more often than older units (660) ?????

I've never seen this before, and we've had the 2689 for 1.5 years now.

Is that why the 660 didn't indicate a new map was available in GE?

????

I'm not sure about that, I have a Zumo 450, a Zumo 550, two Nuvi 2460, and my 2689. When a new map is out it's available for all of them. What came out recently was not a map update, it was a firmware (FW) update, v8.20. I did notice that there was 7 FW updates for my 2689 and only 2 FW updates for the 2460's. I haven't gotten to the Zumo's yet.

Maybe you're confusing a firmware update with a map update? The FW updates only took a few minutes.

Newer models tend to get more software updates than older units to fix the bugs in the newer models. Since this thread is about a software update, let's not confuse it with a map update.

The current City Navigator North America NT map was available in mid-October of last year. The next map update may be out in 1-2 months. If you updated a map on or after mid-October, you have the latest map and no map update will be offered. Watch for a thread called something like "2016.30 is out" here at The Factory and you'll have a map update to perform. Be careful when reading of new map updates. A new European map update has no effect on us in The States who want US or North America map updates.

The only expected explanation I can think of for your map issue is that when the last map came out in October, you updated your nuvi 660 but didn't update your 2689. Is this possible? What version of City Navigator is shown for each of your nuvis? Tap Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo (I think) for the 660 and Settings/Map&Vehicle/myMaps (I think) for the 2689.

I did both 2689 and 660 Maps

I did both 2689 and 660 Maps in October....

When I fired up GE,which was current and up to date, it reported 7 software updates & 1 map upgrade for 2689, and nothing for 660... At the time I thought it was odd, (Map only on 1 of 2 GPS) and that's why I posted that here.
Obviously without a History tab, there's no way to check now.

I was cooking for wife at the time, so I got 2689, connected it, and let it rip.... and walked away for about an hour. It finished successfully.

As with Firmware and Map upgrades in the past, I saw multiple restarts and a map load... which confirmed what I was expecting to see...

I was still confused because I saw only one Map Upgrade, not Two, on GE, and checked again... Nothing new for either. I know there hasn't been a firmware upgrade on 660 for 5+ years...

Anyway, if no one else saw a map upgrade... so be it!

CraigW

I have a question for you, earlier in the thread I reported the changes 8.20 made on my 2689, I only listed items that changed, would you tell me what these are please? My "hardware version" changed? Didn't know a FM update could change the hardware, and what is the "FMI"

I re-posted the info below, thanks in advance for any info you can enlighten me with.

Sorry, all I know about is the Samantha voice update:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42708

TTS3 Samantha 2.20 issued: Pronunciation improvements for major brands

You may find help for the others here:

http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/recent-updates

or for the nuvi specifically:

http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/nuvi

FMI might be Fleet Management Interface in which case I doubt it applies to any of us ordinary users.

Good luck.

thanks

Thanks, Yea, I read about and could figure out most of it. Other than what is FMI, my main question was how could my "hardware" change with a software update. You are very knowledgable and your answers to other's concerns are always helpful so I thought I'd fly it by ya.

Hardware Version before: V5 M4v3 8GB DS128 A6 MFi RDS

Hardware Version after: V5 M4v3 8GB DS128 A6 BT RDS

Nearly identical numbers except the 2nd to last group.

Yup, it's hard to imagine a hardware change...a hardware ID name change maybe, though. rolleyes

Fleet Mangement Interface

Supported models http://www8.garmin.com/solutions/mobile-resource-management/...

What is Garmin Fleet Management?
Fleet Management Interface (FMI) enabled Garmin devices enable interactive
two-way communication between the driver of the vehicle and AVL server (or
customer application).
Note: Please refer to the Appendix for a list of Garmin FMI capabilities for real time route
etc.
How does ALEOS and AirLink device
intergate with Garmin device/FMI?
ALEOS maintains and manages the conenction with the Garmin device. ALEOS
also sends additional status messages to the AVL/customer application notifying
the AVL application about the state of the Garmin device and its connection.
Note: Sierra Wireless
AirLink does not modify or
create protocols for
Garmin Fleet Managemet
Interface. The enhancements
are on top of garmin
protocol.
1. The FMI cable connects the Garmin portable navigation devices (PNDs) and
the AirLink device. This is a custom serial cable available from Garmin.

If you updated the maps on both devices on or after Oct. 14, then you already had the 2016.20 map. So why your 660 is not being offered a map update is probably not the right question. The question should be why was your 2689 offered a map update for the map that was already installed? Garmin Express has been known to do this. The best practice is just to ignore the map update offer if you know you already have the current map.
