Nuvi 2460LMT Repair

I have a Nuvi 2460LMT with a damaged screen. I have removed the damaged screen and ordered a complete replacement.

If members who have replaced GPS screens would share suggestions and/or instructions it would be most appreciated. For example: Is it necessary to transfer the old “rubber” tape to the new screen? Is calibration required?

If the repair fails, suggested replacements for the 2460LMT that have the same features (new or refurbished) would be appreciated.

Good luck

Wow, the YouTube video makes it look as easy as a battery replacement:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW_rMhh0gZ8

I expect the video was for a display/digitizer combo.

Not sure about the tape issue. I give it a good chance that a calibration will be needed. You'll know if it's needed and it's a quick procedure. I suspect we have a FAQ here at The Factory for screen calibrations of nuvis.

My guess is that you'll succeed. If you do end up looking for a replacement device, know that the speed limit correction which you have with your 2460 will likely be missing on a replacement device unless you buy another 2460.

The installation is not

The installation is not difficult, but the screen does not display an image or any sign of light. There must be additional damage, perhaps to the main board.

Installation of the screen merely requires attaching the ribbon cable to the board, being very careful that it is positioned properly and clamped securely.

If I have missed something in the process all suggestions are appreciated.

Battery?

Have you left it plugged in for a few hours to make sure the battery has a charge?

It was plugged in for several hours and I can only assume (no screen display) it is fully charged.

The Voice Command Function responds when I ask for the “Go Home” sequence by responding “Navigating Home”, however, as previously stated, there is a totally black screen. This seems to indicate that the unit is
functioning but, just not able to display the image.

Thanks for your suggestion, I appreciate any help in restoring the unit. I don’t want to junk it!

I have a 2460 that will only work plugged in, won't hold a charge to run on battery power, lasts about 5 minutes, has been like that for a long time. Since I bought it I've always used the external power since I was using it in my work truck. I'm wondering if that somehow shortened the battery life. Never really used (or needed to) on battery power alone.

My Thoughts

Remove the ribbon cable and gently clean the contacts with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol. Check the small pin connector pigtail cable to be certain it is seated correctly. It is very easy to bend a pin during installation.

AFAIK, the rubber tape is used to ensure a snug fit in the case and prevent a possible rattling issue.

LCD screens don’t usually fail completely all at once unless they are subject to major stress. Stuck or dead pixels, missing lines, areas of discoloration or lack of brightness are the usual symptoms of a failing screen.

What were the original symptoms before you replaced the screen? Your theory about additional damage to the unit may be correct if it was dropped or sustained a major impact from flying off the dash somehow.

It is also possible you purchased a defective LCD / digitizer screen. This is especially true if you bought the screen / digitizer unit from a Chinese vendor on eBay.

It certainly would be a shame to junk a unit that is only a few years old. If all your efforts fail, it might be worth getting a professional repair quote from an outfit like Sharcnet.

If it comes down to replacing your 2460, many of us here at the factory recommend the 3597 refurb. It has a larger screen than your old unit and has most of the old features plus a few new ones. Like the 2460, the 3597 has a powered mount but with a magnet feature which makes it a snap to remove.

The best price out there right now for a 3597 refurb is GPS City at $229.

In any case, keep us informed of your decisions.

Nuvi 2460 LMT Screen Replacement

Hi Lou,

In answer to your email request:

You didn't mention if just the touchscreen was cracked or if both the touchscreen & LCD was damaged.

In either case, replacing the entire display is easier than salvaging the LCD and replacing just the touchscreen.

On many of these displays, the touchscreen is soldered to the LCD display. Great care must be taken not to damage the LCD display when removing it from the front bezel and separating the touchscreen.

Soldering iron temperature is important too because the flex PCB on the display can be melted with too high of a temperature and the copper traces can lift up.

Replacing the entire display will be easier but more expensive for the do-it-yourself owner.

As for the black foam border, the replacement display will most likely not have the black foam applied to the front of the display.

You will need to carefully remove the foam border from your old display and apply it to the new display. Hopefully the adhesive will still be sticky enough to adhere to the new display.

I usually apply new film adhesive to the new touchscreen/display to ensure that the foam border will stick to the new display.

The black foam is necessary as it spaces the touchscreen away from the bezel, preventing the bezel from intermittently causing false presses to the touchscreen.

Great care must also be taken when lifting and closing the LCD display locking latch that secures the LCD flex cable to the main board.

If the latch is broken, it is game over. The latch can be replaced but it isn't easy.

In most cases, recalibration won't be necessary but I always do it anyway with a touch stylus.

Good luck!

2469LMT Repairs

When I was installing a new battery, the unit was dropped and the ribbon cable was severed. The complete replacement screen was purchased from a USA source but it was manufactured in China.

Based on your suggestions I have:
1. Plugged in the unit for several hours and tried to obtain an image
with the power cord attached and also with it disconnected

2. Cleaned (alcohol) the contacts of the LCD flex cable and the connection with board

3. Carefully aligned the ribbon connector with board connection and
While maintaining the alignment, locked the clamp

Note as stated previously:
“The Voice Command Function responds when I ask for the “Go Home” sequence by responding “Navigating Home”, however, as previously stated, there is a totally black screen. This seems to indicate that the unit is
functioning but, just not able to display the image”

Thanks for your help.

Another possibility

When you opened the case, did you unplug the pigtail cable that connects the bezel to the main board? If so, check the alignment of the connector. The pins are easily bent if care isn't used when reconnecting. Make sure the pigtail mini plug is seated completely.

With reference to your suggestion, I will recheck the unit and try a new reboot.

As mentioned in #3 above, I checked the ribbon connector, the alignment and clamping of the connector and the board pins.

No success to date.

Thanks for your help

I think Jim at shearcnet.net gave you some good advice.
Those locking latches can be very easily damaged. I believe Jim does not repair units that have been tampered with but it wouldn't hurt to ask him he can repair it. should it be cost effective.
It's too bad you had invested money into it in repairing the LCD & Touchscreen.
