Data Usage

Do I have to worry about GE downloading map updates automatically? I have limited data and can only afford to do the software updates at home.

Do these

Do these things, and recheck that they stay the same after a GE update. Go to Settings:

Uncheck "keep running in background," uncheck "auto launch when a Garmin device is connected" and most important, for "Automatically download device updates," be sure that "Never" is checked. That should save your precious data and avoid excess data charges.

Thanks

I have already checked "Never", but am willing to allow the automatic updates as long as it only updates the software, not the map files.

The reason I asked is

I installed GE, registered my nuvi, and updated the firmware, but was careful NOT to update the maps.

However, GE still managed to burn through 5GB of my 10GB data allowance. I find it hard to believe that it used all of that data without downloading the maps.

Like you, I find it hard to believe that kind of "data" usage was from GE. Now, I realize that I do not know how your provider calculates "data" usage, but give us any details you can concerning what GE did.

Here is my data useage in GB as calculated by Verizon

11/6/2015 11:00 AM 0.023
11/6/2015 5:00 AM 0.005
11/5/2015 11:01 PM 2.339
11/5/2015 5:01 PM 3.533
11/5/2015 11:01 AM 0.002
11/5/2015 5:01 AM 0.002
11/4/2015 11:02 PM 0.007
11/4/2015 5:02 PM 0.048
11/4/2015 11:02 AM 0.001
11/4/2015 5:02 AM 0.022

I installed GE at about 5pm yesterday. Hard to accept that this data spike was a coincidence. I've never exceeded 0.2GB during any previous interval.

Since Verizon charges $15/GB

you can see why I am upset. That was a $90 unauthorized data spike.

I had to increase my data plan today to avoid the overage charge.

GE Reports 1 Update Available

Full Coverage of North America
Version 2016.20
File Size: 5.32 GB
Installation Time: 1 hour 5 Minutes

There is an Install button to the right of this.

Does this mean GE had already downloaded the map update and it is ready to install?

Check here

Assuming the latest map

C:\Users\All Users\Garmin\Maps\City Navigator North America NT 2016.20.gmap

Also check for "your name" instead of "All Users"

I found my answer

A search for *.jcv located the 2016.20 map files in the hidden Program Data folder, so GE did download the new maps automatically.

That means I definitely have to keep the automatic updates set to Never.
