2595 Garmin having problems after map download need help

I updated the maps on my 2595 Garmin. When I used it afterwards it works for awhile in the car and then goes back and forth from computer mode(like hooked up to one) to on again. Performed a hard reset no luck. Reloaded the maps did another hard reset same thing. Anyone have an idea on what I need to do? Thanks for your replies, Jerry

Hardware?

You've tried the software route, so hardware could be suspect. I'd try to clean the jack on the power cable and socket on the nuvi and hope for the best.

If that fails, I'd call Garmin and see what they could do for you.

An experiment would be to gently jiggle the connection between the power cable and nuvi in your running car and see if that increases the amount of switching to computer mode.

Ttry A Wall Charger

I agree with CraigW, I strongly suspect it's your 12V power cable or the USB port on your Nuvi port not making a proper connection.

To rule out the car power cable is at fault you can try connecting the Nuvi to a wall charger using a USB cable. Once connected to the wall charger, if it shows the user mode it most likely is your power cable. You should also try to GENTLY jiggle the USB cable while using the wall charger, if it goes into computer mode it's quite possible your USB post on the Nuvi is bad.
Hopefully you have a proven wall charger that put the Nuvi in user mode in the past.

After 2016.10 my 2595 did exactly the same, bouncing back and forth from computer connect to normal trip. I am investigating as this never happened before. Anyone else?

.really strange

Mine started acting up again. Called garmin and they said the plug connector on my unit had gone bad. Never did it till the map upgrade, Let me know what you find out Moose26

Hardware Failure

The map upgrade had nothing to do with your issue, it was just a coincidence that this occurred after the update. It's a hardware failure that comes when the USB port on your Nuvi loses contact with the main board. I suspect it's the contact wire that supplies the power from your power chord having intermittent contact.

This is primarily due to having stress on the USB power connector wire going into the back of your Nuvi. That stress can separate the soldered connection on the main board. I always recommend by wrapping the wire around whatever mount your using before connecting to the Nuvi, this will eliminate any movement of the wire to the USB connector.

Your options are having the 2595 repaired, or if you like the 2595 well enough consider buying a Garmin Factory Refurbished one that will arrive like new with the full 1 year warranty.

Thanks! That is exactly what Garmin told me. Will probably go with a newer model now

Newer model

If you are going with a newer model, consider one with a powered mount, so you can avoid the problem you had with your 2595. Check out muell9k's new FAQ to see which Garmin models have powered mounts. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45200

I highly recommend the 3597LMTHD, even though it is a discontinued model. You can still purchase this model new or refurbished.

@Jerry
I believe you made a typo on of of your considered models, there is no 2698 but rather a 2689. I would not recommend that one since it does not have a power cradle mount.

If you are a realtor as your user name implies, you are using the GPS frequently so I suggest you buy one with a power cradle as not to experience what you did with your 2595.
Both the 3597 and 2797 have power cradles so perhaps stick with those models. If I were buying one I'd go with a refurbished 3597LMTHD since many members rave about it.

You can get a 3597LMTHD Garmin Factory Refurbished for 229.95 from a reliable Garmin Authorized Dealer.

If the 7" screen is important to you go with the 2597LMT.

I Have Both

The 2689 and the 2797 Garmins.
I do a turn of the power cable around the mount, then use a twist tie to secure the cable to the mount.

This really keeps any strain off the power head itself. Just my way.

Same issue I had

I had this same issue a year or so ago with my 2595. Intermittant connection and glitches. I called Garmin and they offered me a re-furb for a very reasonable price. Mine was out of warranty and I got the feeling this may have been a weak link in the unit. I plug mine in every time I use it in the car so I think time took its toll. I have been more careful with this one. I think the occasional times it fell/slid off the dash didn't help.

Ordered a 2699LMTHD

Got a great price on a 2699LMT. Will wrap the cord around the mount yo release tension as suggested. Thanks to all!
