Maps in Europe with downloaded map with no data useage

OK, back on maps in Europe.

Has anyone from another country taken their smartphone or tablet to Europe and used any map app with downloaded map without using data?
Example, Google Map, Here, etc...

Did they work well?
Did you have to use any data?
Did they give routing with spoken directions?

Thanks for all your help.
Mary

.

The Google Maps app will allow you to download maps for offline use.

There's also a very good app (on iOS not sure about Android) called Ulmon (formerly CityMaps2Go) that supports offline maps.

You can try them before you go to see what results you get.

Off-line Maps for Europe

I installed an IOS (Apple) app from maps.me.

The google maps only allow routing on Android devices, I believe.

The maps.me allows you to download maps and routing for use off-line.

The entire Czech Republic is one map, but Germany requires a download for each state (i.e. Bavaria, Saxony, etc.)

Haven't been to Europe yet (picking up a BMW early July), but I did download the map for Georgia, and successfully used it here in airplane mode.

Give it a try.

Maps

They also show it for Android https://goo.gl/KaDh1I .You may also want to view the other offerings from Ulmon. https://goo.gl/SIW0BN

Europe

I just stuck a SD card with Europe 2010 on it into my old 855.
Things don't change as much over there as they do in North America.
Problem solved. Spent some time locating certain POI's and saved them as favorites.
I'll be using it all of July over there.

I have the 2014.30 CN Europe NT sc card.
Now that I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Android) I am trying to get away from taking too many items to carry.
I would like to be able to just use my Android phone and not carry the Nuvi 2450 along with the phone.

Thanks.

Will look at that.
Not sure how to simulate on an Android phone for Europe while in the US to see if they work.

Thanks, will look at that also. Post again after you go to Europe in July. And congratulations on your BMW!

Does the Map.me give spoken directions for a route?

Thanks

here maps

Here maps for Europe seems to be quite good. If you will have problems it will be mostly on small country roads. Before downloading just remember, that whole Europe from Here takes almost 10GB of space. If you don't have that much space you can load single countries.

Thanks Charles

I don't remember how large my SD card is. We usually only go to 2 or 3 countries when we go so I could download the ones we are going to. I have used Here off and on to try to see how it works.

So far Here is #1 and if Google does what I read and had Europe download and it is better than downloading now then Google will be #2. (If Garmin just had not pulled Viago Europe map before I bought them that would be my first choice)

Is there any data at all needed with Here offline maps?

I read somewhere, but can not find it now, that one of the popular offline maps had to use a some data in Europe but I can not remember which one or what far. (getting old smile )

Thanks.

used copilot on nexus 7

it worked well for us, had spoken directions, and routed better than sister-in-law's TomTom. I was well worth the 30 or so USD for the maps.

I have CoPilot Prem

The CoPilot worked great with my Nexus 7 but I have had trouble with the Note 4. I finally deleted it. May try again to get it to work.

Thanks.

Only reason you would need data would be for live traffic otherwise download the maps for the countries you need ahead of time and then select the offline mode and no further data needed to operate and navigate with the HERE app.

That sounds good. Will look more into Here.

Voice Directions

Maps.me does not have voice (spoken) directions

The points of interest seems pretty lame at this time, compared to Google maps.

It says they only wrote the app, all data is from OpenStreetMap (OSM), so it will get better.

Roy

Roy, Thanks

Thanks Roy, just what I needed to know. That will help me mark Maps.me off my list.
Thanks again, Mary
