Time Zone Map V16.0 ... DO NOT install

I ran across this over in the Garmin software forum today ..

Garmin Express (and possibly WebUpdater and my.Garmin) is offering a software update (Time Zone Map V16.0) for devices that support the time zone map. It is being reported on the Garmin forum that this update is causing various problems on devices that have been updated, including connection problems between the device and Garmin software such as BaseCamp.

It is probably best to avoid this update until more information is available about potential problems.

.

As was mentioned above by both Alan and myself, you guys are likely getting the older v15 TZ Map file and NOT v16.x like GarminExpress is perhaps leading people to believe.

Two methods for VERIFYING the true TZ Map file version were provided by the both of us on page one of this topic as well. I would trust those two methods more than GarminExpress or whatever other info Garmin states (which is clearly wrong at this point).

I think that the true v16 (or whatever version number Garmin will use) will likely be packaged with the new CN map update.

LOL

I posted a comment about this 16.01 vs 15.0 version anomaly over on the Garmin software forum in the thread that originally identified this problem. So what does Garmin do? Instead of clarifying what is going on, they closed the thread immediately after I posted my comment ... so we can't talk about it any longer! Geesh are they paranoid or what?

If you are interested, read it now before they delete my final pot.

I saw that a few minutes ago over there as well. I seriously didn't know that was you in the Garmin Forums, Alan. I wanted to reply to it as well to add my own findings and then saw that it was locked. Garmin Damage control at it's finest! mrgreen

Garmin Says...

Per this Garmin website:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4747

Garmin says that V15 is the latest TZ map.

And Garmin Express says I'm up to date.

Garmin says that V15 is the latest TZ map.

Are you sure about that? mrgreen

Check this out:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=9189

Which is right? Well, the link you posted currently is but who really knows...also, look at the date displayed on both pages linked above which states "as of October 7, 2014". Somebody's asleep in Garmin land.

Yes, v15 is the latest TZ Map version. However v16.01 is the TZ Map fix which actually installs v15 of the TZ Map in case you mistakenly downloaded v16.0 of the TZ Map...

There...I think I've clarified the situation. Wait, maybe not. rolleyes

I was just updating some POI files when Garmin Express showed me that Time Zone Map Update 16.01 was available. I had updated to 16.00 yesterday (Sunday) and had to change my GPS to Mass Storage Mode to be able to use POI Updater. After installing 16.01 everything works great again. I changed back to MTP Auto Detect and now the GPS correctly communicates with POI Updater. smile I have not tried Webupdater but Isuspect it will work correctly as well.

Garmin Express now says Time Zone Map v16.02.

.

Nevermind what the silly web pages say and what Garmin Express says, what version is actually installed on the GPS? I've posted instructions earlier in the topic on how to verify what is actually on the unit. I'll repost it here:

To view the actual installed TZ map version (& not just what WebUpdater or GarminExpress tell you), do the following:

Press and HOLD the battery icon for ~10 seconds, tap the "Next" button (press the button area even if the button vanishes due to a test screen) until you reach the "Version Information..." screen.

From this screen, tap the "Start Test" button which will enable the "More" button. Tap the "More" button which will reveal the "Inventory" screen on which you'll find "TZ Map D1074-00..." with the version number displayed.

Note that when entering the Diagnostics screen, you'll lose satellite ephimeris data which will have to be re-acquired and may take a few minutes...no big deal but just something to be aware of. To exit diagnostics, simply power off the nuvi or find the particular page that has the "Exit" button and use that.

On a related note, they've finally updated the date to be current on the above-linked pages.

Legit.

This actually does install a V16.02 file which is about 30K smaller in size than the V15.0 file. I suspect CraigW is right and this is the update that was intended for V16,0 which (as we know) didn't go so well.

Disable Auto-update of non-critical updates

Garmin Express settings allow you to de-select the option to install non-critical update automatically. Always a good idea to control that option and look at the update experience of others.

Thanks for putting out the word. I notice GE wants to install v.16.02 TMZ file now.

GPS_Rider wrote:

It should be quite safe to do so now. The TZ Map v16.02 update actually does install the v16.02 TZ Map update file. Here's a rundown of this whole TZ Map update mess:

1. TZ Map update v16.0 installed a faulty v16.0 TZ Map file which prohibited correct connection of the device to the PC, messing with it's ability to check for updates using the WebUpdater or Garmin Express apps (maybe others). The installed TZ Map file installed by update v16.0 was verified as being v16.0. This is the verified faulty TZ Map file.

2. TZ Map update v16.01 was released to correct & replace the faulty v16.0. The TZ Map version that was installed by this update was the previous TZ Map v15. Garmin's update version numbering had to be a greater value (v16.01) in order for an update to actually take place. In reality, the TZ Map file itself was actually backdated. The installed TZ Map file installed by update v16.01 was verified as being v15.0.

3. TZ Map update v16.02 was released to supersede all previous updates. The installed TZ Map file installed with this update is verified as v16.02 and works properly.

Not sure if my Nuvi 3795 uses this but thanks for the heads up.

All

All Nuvi's use this file AFAIK. It's how it knows the current time no matter where you use the device. The only ones that may not use it are the very first 3xx and 6xx models.

I think the 7x0 and 8x5 series can be added to the list of devices without the time zone map. I wonder about the 7x5 and 8x0 series.

7x5

The 7x5 nuvi series does use the time zone map. I don't think the 2x0 and 8x0 nuvis use the time zone map ... not sure about the 2x5.

I believe the 7x5 series was the first to use the TZ Map. That also rules out the 7x0 series.

Garmin rolled out the 1602 time zone map update yesterday for the Viago app on both my smartphone and tablet and installed ok and no problems with the app after the update.
