Viago gone?

I found this link over on the Garmin software forum: http://sites.garmin.com/en-US/viago/

Quote:

This app is no longer available for purchase or download.

It appears that Garmin may have discontinued Viago ... too bad. Although it could have used a few enhancements, I kind of liked the program.

So this is not supported with Android

I don't have a smartphone compatible with Garmin StreetPilot Onboard, but I suspect that it is similar to Viago. It works off line.

Can not find Streetpilot for Android. What App does Garmin have that is Android now?

Navigon.

Navigon. Note that this is a product that was purchased by Garmin, not developed by them. So it will not have the "nuvi look and feel" like Viago does.

Thanks, are Navigon maps offline?

I plan on using Viago as much as I can but with no updates is probably will not work when there are system updates to Android. I want to have everything in mind for this when it happens.

I looked at Google Maps. Are only the maps you choose offline or can you have the entire map offline?

Yes.

The maps are onboard, so you don't need a data connection for navigation. However, I don't think you get free map updates. Here is a CNET review from a couple of years ago.

If what you use maps on the tablet for is to navigate around a city or just provide a larger view of your current position on the highway, I'd seriously consider the free version of Mapfactor Navigator. It uses Open Street Maps so you can plan routes and it will store all its maps on the device. I use it on my 3 year old Android tablet which is stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich for its OS version.

Granted, it's not as intuitive or familiar as your Garmin, but the cost is right and the map updates are frequent and simple to download over Wi-Fi.

After paying for Viago and the extras I bought the price of Mapfactor Navigator look great.
It has been suggested before but with Viago I never looked at it. Will check this one out.

Yes for map updates.

According to Garmin users will continue to get map updates.Just the same as when a model is discontinued.

"If there is an update to the maps it maps should be announced in the application, and you will be prompted in the application to update your maps. Updates to the application should take place through the Play Store, if an update is released. You can check for updates to the app by going to My Apps>All>Select Viago. If you need to reinstall the app you will do it the same way you check for application updates. It will not show up under installed apps, and will only show up under the "All" section."

Charlie, you are much more optimistic about this than I am. smile I will be surprised if we ever see another map update offered on Viago. So c'mon Garmin ... Surprise me! surprised

Other versions of Android

I think we will but the problem I see down the road is Android. When you go to a newer Android phone or tablet. Will the latest software support it.For instance Lollipop out already for some units and others to follow. Will it support it?Will Kit Kat be as far as it goes to install Viago?

I guess we will have to keep monitoring Viago android update compatibility. That way a person will be able to decide if updating to android 5 would be worth possibly losing Viago.

Android Updates And Viago

I was on vacation recently and used my Nexus 4, which is on Lollipop, with Garmin Viago. I did not have spoken street names. They worked prior to the update. Now I suppose I can't definitely blame it on the Android OS update, but that is my suspicion.

Are there any devices on Lollipop and spoken street names works

It would be interesting to know if any devices on Lollipop have working spoken street names with Viago and what devices they are and what Lollipop version number they are running.

Viago Marketing

I always thought the marketing (or lack thereof) for Viago was bizarre. The naming was strange. Few knew what Viago meant. They should have called it like Garmin To Go or something. That's a shame they cancelled it. I guess the only Garmin alternative is the expensive Garmin North America. Viago needed a lot of work anyway.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Street names OK

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. AT&T just updated it for the first time on Lollipop a couple of weeks ago to 5.0.1.
It is working great and my Viago has spoken street names.

...As I was previewing this comment before I posted it I checked to make sure it was 5.0.1, it was and I clicked on check for update. I wanted to see if 5.1 was available. I received 5.1 for my Nexus 7 just this week. The Note 4 immediately started doing the update. It did not ask me if I wanted to update and it did not tell me what update it is but it is 142.17 MB so I am assuming it is Lollipop 5.1. Will let you know when it completes if it is and if I still have Spoken Street Names in Viago.

My Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I did have an update to Android 5 but it was still 5.0.1 and it only fixed a few things. BUT, my Viago still has Spoken Street Names.

This software update includes:
Update Private Mode settings
EAS fix for encryption bypass
Removal of Softcard
Emergency Dial fix related to Lookout & Mobile Locate
Google Security Patches

That actually depends on what smartphone you have. If you are an Apple person, Garmin StreetPilot Onboard is still an option.

OLD thread... BUT

I know this is an old thread from back in APRIL, but Ive been trying lots of different GPS apps (NAVIGON, igo myway, TOMTOM, NLIFE). I know Navigon is now Garmin, but the VIAGO app is just better, IMO .. I like the way it gives clear directions in time to make the turn etc.

Does anyone know of an app like VIAGO that does everything viago did? NAVIGON is close, IGO MY WAY is CLOSE, but none of them are as good. most Apps do not have real exit signs, lane assist, etc..

Also with VIAGO, can you search POI on a route? For instance, lets say you are on a route from NJ to FL and along the way you want to find food, can you search, go there and then get back on the route to florida?

Thanks..

Viago Gone?
