Need garmindevice.xml for nüvi 1300LM

Hello Forum,

I have a Garmin nüvi 1300LM with a defective USB port - the device still charges but it not being recognized by any computer, or Garmin Express, or Garmin Map Update (I tried with three different cables on a Mac and on a PC; it does not work).

This happened shortly after I successfully updated the software to v6.20 and the maps to v2015.30.

Unfortuntely I never made a backup of the device to my computer (I got the device only recently from a friend who bought a newer model) which means that I will now not be able even with an SD drive to update my maps.

Is it possible to get somewhere a garmindevice.xml for a nüvi 1300LM, put the ID of my device into it, and use that than for map updates onto an SD drive? Can possibly somebody here provide me with such a file?

Thanks and greetings - resucami

Welcome

Are you able to use the 1300 as a GPS device in your vehicle?

Unfortunately, I don't think this method will work. In addition to the unit ID, the garmindevice.xml file also contains a registration code and unlock code that would be unique to your device. Unless you can somehow figure out a way to get a copy of garmindevice.xml from your 1300, I don't think the map update cloning will work for you. Have you tried putting your nuvi in preboot mode?

Registration code and unlock code are possibly bad news. I will try to get the file of the computer of the person who owned it before. Maybe she made a backup.
What is preboot mode, and how could I do this?

Preboot.

Preboot mode is normally used to get a "bricked nuvi" into mass storage mode so it can have the firmware reflashed. This normally happens when the device has been damaged by a bad update or accidental format of the internal storage, and won't boot into operation mode or isn't recognized by the computer. This does not really fit your problem as your issue sounds more like a hardware failure. But I thought it might be worth a try to see if you could get your nuvi into mass storage mode long enough to copy off the garmindevice.xml file.

It is a rather complex procedure with considerable risk ... just Google "nuvi preboot mode" or "nuvi cure3" and you will find lots of information to read on this forum and other forums.

garmindevice.xml

Thanks. I will first try to get the file of the previous owner's computer. Hopefully that works.

Correction?

I may be wrong on this point. I note that member JaVaWa over on the Garmin software forums says this method WILL work if you get a garmindevice.xml file from another user and replace the unit ID with the one for your device. I still have my doubts, but it would certainly be worth a try. JaVaWa (who is from the Netherlands) has developed several software tools for Garmin devices and is very knowledgable, so I will defer to his expertise.

If you are able to get a copy of the nuvi 1300 garmindevice.xml file, let us know the results.

Pre Boot Mode

If alandb's suggestion doesn't work you may want to read instructions for PreBoot mode at this link.

your unit has traffic, the LM has maps so therefore they have different part numbers.

I believe if you contact Garmin support, they can connect to your PC remotely and likely supply you with the file. But even if you had the file, how would you even transfer it to the nuvi if the USB port is defective as you mentioned above?

@DorkusNimrod ...

He doesn't need to get the file to his nuvi. He wants the file so he can update his maps on SD card via cloning.

After re-reading your post using Preboot mode won't help you recover your garmindevice.xml from the Nuvi.
If your USB port is defective attaching a USB cable while in Preboot mode won't alow a connection to the Nuvi.

Hopefully you can attain a copy of the file from the previous owner as you stated.
