Sound files not working..

Hello.

I'm having a problem getting sound files to work on my nuvi 2557. When I load them with a mp3 extension I don't get any voice message. Only the dong.

When I load them with a wav extension I get a message on the loader that it can not use the sound files or something like that. What am I doing wrong?

Looks like this might be a candidate for a "common problem" since there seems to be some similarity to the other thread to which dobs108 has given you a link.

Would it be possible for you to write down the message that you get when you try to use POI Loader with your current .wav file(s).

My purpose in asking is to see if we can reproduce the problem and perhaps isolate it to a certain type of .wav file. If so, then data on this problem could be detailed in the FAQ

The message you are getting after running Poi Loader is most likely you have not installed the sox.exe or installed in the wrong location.Check FAQ http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 and follow the instructions.

That is correct.

I had the complete sox folder in the POI loader folder. Now I opened the folder and copied the sox.exe file into the poi loader folder. I still don't get any sound and have to play with it a little more. One good thing is that I don't get any error messages from the loader any more.

Right you will get that message if the un-zipped sox.exe not there or wrong location. Now just make sure you have no double extension and you name the wav same as the main file except the extensions. Also be sure to have a good wav file.

I don't understand

"have a good wav file". All I did was changed the extention from mp3 to wav. Waybe that is my problem.

you can't do that

WAV and MP3 are completely different. You need to convert your MP3 files to WAV using one of several utilities. I use Audacity but there are many others that do the same thing and the vast majority are free.

You may find a good wav file on site http://www.poi-factory.com/gps-sounds . Hopefully you can find one. Did notice a lot of mp3 sounds so may not have and luck finding one. Sure thought there use to be a lot more wav files there before.

Make your own using link below if unable to find one.

There used to be very many wav files available as well as mp3. There was some kind of a kerfuffle and essentially every wav file was removed.

@HerbSch

Here is a wav file that will get your attention

1923 Model T Ford Aaoogha Horn

Turns out the very first file in our listing of sound files is a wav file (the 1923 Model T Ford Aaoogha Horn) and I notice another which I did and named POI Factory Test WAV File.

We discussed in the past that we could do conversions of .mp3 to .wav by a few of us taking a batch of .mp3 files and just making the conversions. I am still willing to do so.

Looks like it would be of value to have both because some members still have devices with the built in .mp3 player. However, my bet is that 70% or more of the users have devices that require a .wav file.

Need wav files

I knew about that and was tap dancing around from saying anything about it on the post. That should have been resolved some time ago.Various members I believe posted they were going to do the wav files to replace the ones removed.Like I said that has been some time ago.I bet one member most likely still has the wav files tucked away.Maybe Poi Factory can get a handle on this.MP3 not in demand like it use to be.

I made and installed new wav files. Then I simulated a trip past two Tim Hortons locations in my neighborhood and she talked to me. Great stuff.
Thank you very much.

Nice going HerbSch.It does make a big difference with the sound alerts.

Converting All POI Factory Sounds To .wav

I think having ONLY .wav sounds available for downloads at POI Factory makes sense and would make it easier for all.

Those members with older GPS's that play .mp3 files would still hear POI's created with .wav sounds since those units would recognize both .MP3 and .Wav that were created with POILoader.

I use only .wav sounds when creating a POI file and my really old Nuvi 660 (plays mp3's) recognizes them. I don't need to create two sets of files, one for my 660 and another for my 2460.

Agree.

I agree with muell9k. It would certainly simplify things, and the number of MP3 capable devices is dwindling. Maybe it is time for the few that want MP3's to do the conversions instead of the other way around.

No Need To Convert .wav to MP3

My apologies, I should have been clearer in my post.
Units that can play MP3's and used POILoader to create a POI with MP3 sounds, can just as well play POI's created with .wav files. They will play the POI sounds using either format. All units that don't have MP3 capability can only play POI's that were created with .wav files and having sox.exe in the POILoader folder.

The sox.exe always MUST be present anytime a .wav file is used regardless if using on older units or newer.

Another reason to go to wav files

My nuvi 760 ran for years using mp3 files for Custom POI alerts. With a firmware update, it lost the ability to use mp3 files. The fix was to convert the mp3 files to wav and install sox.exe. Now it works fine.

An excellent suggestion

If each member would just submit there their own personal wav files. It would put a big dent in what is missing now. Sure there would be some duplication but hopefully the site could work it out.

Good idea

That sounds best. My worry was not so much some member's effort in coming up with all the wav files, but was with the site's poor two staff being inundated with a few hundred sounds that had to be individually placed in the proper web pages.

Hmm, I'd offer my group of wavs, but mine were from the vast selection of wavs that were pulled from the site a few years back so maybe there'd be problems with relisting them.

but

if you have sound effects such as a siren or horn the file may not be available in WAV format which means it would have to be downloaded as an MP3, edited to add the verbiage you wanted and then that file converted. An example would be some of the files we have as MP3 for warning of speed cameras and red light cameras. There are a great many programs allowing you to slice and dice MP3 files but try finding them for WAV.

I have wav files including

I have wav files including red light and cameras with sirens and horns. Sure other have the same they have converted over the years. BobDee use to make them for any one who asked him a while back. The point is there is not much available now to select from. Most of us who have been members for a while have what we need. New members coming on board are looking for the files to download. Seeing mostly mp3 files for download. I can see where the confusion comes in on a new person going with the mp3 first.

Yes, I understood your point muell9k. It is just that some folks with older units will still want to use MP3 and not mess with SOX, even though their device would work fine with .WAV and SOX.EXE. So if we have all .WAV files on POI Factory and they insist on MP3, they can do the conversion from .WAV to .MP3.

CraigW wrote:

Does anyone know why the .WAV's were pulled in the first place? Was it it copyright or something else? Maybe we are wasting our time discussing this if there is a reason that the converted .WAV files can't be published.

Nothing was wrong with the files. We could use them right now if they were posted. One member put a lot of time and effort in converting the mp3 files. I think CraigW's post above pretty much identified what happen.
