POIs on SD card.

How do I put POI s on a SD card? The info must be somewhere but I can't find it.

One of the steps in POI

One of the steps in POI Loader wizard asks you to choose Garmin internal storage or (external) SD card.

ok,

Got it. Thanks.

Part of it depends on the

Part of it depends on the GPS however. I don't know if the newer Garmin devices have removed this, but on my 200W, 255W, and 1300, placing POIs on the SD/MicroSD card and booting up leads to a prompt to install those POIs to the internal storage.

Also depending on the device you may have an option to tell the GPS not to ask you again. I believe my 200W has this option but the 1300 does not.

On my 1450 I have extras installed on SD card. Upon boot up I am always asked if I want my extras installed so they will be available if card is removed. Do not think I have an option to not ask again.

Not sure about your model.

Not sure about your model. As crazy as it sounds. Some units once you said yes the next screen allowed you to select not to ask again. My 265 was like that.

My 1350 always asks at boot up. I say no.

There is no other screen that asks to not ask again.

And that is the trick. If you need to say YES to get the extra screen and not see the prompt again.

Prompt to install POI onto device in the 1xxx series

Here's T923347 answer to this question back in 2010 smile

Doesn't work this way on the 1xxx series. Your only option is Yes - install them or No - don't install them. If you say No the message reappears each time you boot the Nuvi up with the card in the slot. mad

If you say Yes, you can delete them, as mentioned, by simply deleting the POI.GPI file from the Nuvi.

As Charlie mentioned there are other series such as the 2x5 that have a work around to this annonyance.

That brings back memories. grin

The point is that no matter what model your using, if you get the message about POI's you need to say YES to keep it from coming up all the time. What happens after that depends on the model Nuvi your using.

Create Subdirectories

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42571

I suggest that you create subdirectories, unless you only have a very few POIs.

Read through the thread shown above.

You will see where I have explained how to create subs and how they are sorted in your Garmin. Its a bit of work at first, but well worth the effort. Take your time and read through this thread.

If I say yes on my 1350 to the 1st screen then the pois are put in to main memory.
Saying no lets the unit continue booting and they remain on the card.
I have to say no every time.

If you load on an SD Card, when you first insert the card into the GPS, it will ask if you want loaded on the main memory. However, there is a check box at the bottom that says "Don't Ask Me Again". Check this and then answer "No" to the question about loading onto main memory.

If you change, delete or add any POIs to the SD card a later date, it will ask this again, but only if there's a change. Simply follow the procedure above at this time.

Yeah, wish there were an option to 'not ask me again' kinda annoying it asks every time you power cycle it.

Why

is quite simply the option does not exist in all Garmin automotive units. That option was taken away about the time they went from 3 digit models to 4 digit models.

Prompt to copy POI to device

Also depending on the device you may have an option to tell the GPS not to ask you again. I believe my 200W has this option but the 1300 does not.

The various models have different ways to deal with the POI once they are installed on the SD card and then the device is booted. On my nuvi 750, the way to avoid duplicating the POI without getting a prompt each time I powered on the unit wasn't intuitive. The screen that comes up on boot is: "New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed?" The correct response is Yes. This presents a 2nd screen this a check box "Don't ask me again."; and 2 buttons at the bottom, Skip and Install. Checking the box and selecting Skip doesn;t write them to the device. You won't see these screens again until the next time you run POI Loader.

Should you have found yourself with duplicate POI, possibly even 2 different versions, there are a couple of ways to fix this. One is to delete the POI Files.gpi file (or whatever name you gave it) from the \Garmin\POI Folder of the Garmin. The approved way is to launch POI Loader and on the 1st screen select the choice to "Remove all previous..." and select the Garmin from the pulldown.

On my more modern 3597, the boot prompt removes the ambiguity in the process with a straight forward question and checkbox.

The question may come up as to why the Garmin even asks about copying the files to the device from the SD card. My conclusion is that there may be some who don't have a way to install Extras such as vehicles or other files directly from a computer to the device but have them installed onto the SD card. In this case they could be installed from the card then once done, the user would normally remove the card. Most, probably use the SD card in a different way as many of the older units need the additional storage to hold the detailed maps, so we leave the SD card installed.

Typical Garmin Engineering

It's become obvious from this thread that Garmin Engineering has no engineering standards. They hire someone, tell him to program the damned thing and don't tell him that certain things should remain the same.

My NUVI2555LMT says "New Extras data found on the card.Install this to make it available if the card is removed?" Immediately under this statement, is a Check Box that says, in a bold font that is at least 1.5 times as large as the above, "Do not ask me again" Check that and then you have two large buttons that are simply "No" or "Yes". If you say "No" it does not copy to the unit, but as long as you checked the Do Not Ask box, it will not bug you again, until, you change any POI File.

My NUVI 350 is pretty much the same except the first screen says "New data found on NUVI" and you touch OK. Then it asks if you want to copy to the unit., with the same "Don't ask" check box and the same "No" or "Yes".
