Speed Cameras in School Zones: What motorists need to know. (Locations & the law)

"SCHOOL SPEED ZONE" SHALL MEAN A DISTANCE NOT TO EXCEED ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED TWENTY FEET (1/4 mile) ON A HIGHWAY (street) PASSING A SCHOOL BUILDING, ENTRANCE OR EXIT OF A SCHOOL ABUTTING ON THE HIGHWAY

(Camera must be on the same street as the school building). The cameras are authorized to be in operation only on school days 1/2 hour before, and 1 hour after school activities at the location. Many schools have early and late programs, so the speed cameras can potentially be used between 7am & 6pm

Abutting definition: to be adjacent; touch or join at the edge or border (often followed by on, upon, or against): This piece of land abuts on

a street.

NYC Speed Camera Update: Please SLOW DOWN and use caution.

Several people have messaged me regarding the speed camera on Goethals Rd N. in the vicinity of Lamberts Lane. That camera fits the criteria under the law. The School for Civic Leadership building is located along Goethals Rd N. Many have concerns about this being a "Speed Trap" since it is located at the bottom of the South Ave exit of the W/B SIE. There is a 30mph exit speed limit sign located approximately 200 feet from the exit on the highway. This location is similar to another speed camera location off the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn.

NYC DOT is authorized to deploy 140 speed cameras each day. DOT is utilizing both stationary cameras and mobile units on parked SUVs. The mobile units are being rotated throughout the city. A Notice of Violation will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle if it is recorded going over 10 mph above the speed limit in the area.

Many NYC schools have camps and programs during the summer which fit the criteria under the law. NYS does not have a set definition of a school day. The speed cameras can be operated 1/2 hour before student activities and 1 hour after school activities end. After school activities also count. So the hours can be as early as 6:30am and as late as 7pm in some cases
It is also worth noting private schools like Yeshivas are covered under the law. If schools have student activities on Saturday or Sunday the speed cameras can be active on those days.

And here, we have what I suspect is the real reason for the new 25 mph NYC speed limit: speed camera revenue.

Sucker the public with the 25 vs 30 mph alleged safety benefits, then increase the number of speed cameras gradually.

It's all about the children, don't ya know.

Are school speed limit signs posted?

The new speed camera law does not require school speed limit signs posted or any school signs at all. Is anyone aware of any locations with a speed camera without signs in NYC?
