Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or Nexus 6

OK, it's time for me to spend money again. I am trying to talk my husband into a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I have been reviewing it on line and now I need advice from the experts. You did good in telling me about the Nexus 7 so now it is the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The reason I want this is to carry less with me. I always carry my smartphone, my Nexus 7 Tablet and sometimes my wifi camera.

My reasoning to my husband is that I can carry only the one unit, instead of the three, and have a lighter and roomer handbag.

Do any of you have the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or have any information about it. Also I am always open to other suggestions. I have looked at the iPhone 6+ but I think I like the Note 4 best.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks Mary

EDIT: Just heard there is a Nexus 6 coming in November.

I would go with the note 4 if I was to get a new phone

The note 4 could take the place of all 3 of the others you are now carrying. Once you have had a little time using the S pen you will not want to be without it and it is so convenient to have it stored in a special slot inside the phone. The screen is large enough for daily use for email, web, etc. yet not to big to comfortably use it as a phone.

I have been using the Samsung note 8.0 for a year and a half that has very similar capabilities to the note 4 less the phone and love the S pen and everything that you can use it for.

Thanks rjrsw

Just what I wanted to hear. I keep watching the youtube videos on the Note 4 and do so want it. Glad you like it.

Samsung Note 4

I am debating getting something like the Note 4 or a tablet.

I love my Nexus 7 tablet

And it fits in my handbag just right but that adds weight and as I get older the less weight I have to carry the better, and as I said I could replace 3 for 1 with the Note 4. I will still use the Nexus 7 at home while my husband is on the computer as it is a little larger than the Note 4. That is if I can talk him into it, I usually can but it always takes a little talking.

Just read about the Nexus 6

It is to be released in November and is comparable to the Note 4 but cheaper. I will also be looking at this.
Will be open for any comments or suggestions on both phones.
Thanks Mary

N6

It's unlocked for any provider. And, Motorola has great cellular radios.

The Nexus 6 also recieves

The Nexus 6 also recieves updates straight from Google, meaning no waiting months after the fact for one. On the flip side, the storage is not expandable, which could be an issue if the internal storage fills up.

The Nexus 6 pricing isn't that much of a bargain, unlike the pricing for the 5.

Reading about Nexus 6

It has non replaceable battery and the no storage. I am leaning toward the Note 4

The inability to add inexpensive additional memory would be a non starter for me with the Nexus.

The sPen that the note 4 comes with I find to be a very useful and convenient feature being that it is always with you because it stores within the phone itself.

The Nexus 7 I have does not have an sd slot and I do miss that.
I think I have decided on the Samsung Galaxy note 4.

My husband thinks if I wait till after Christmas they may be cheaper as I always like to buy my unit and not be tied down to a plan for 2 years. Just hope he doesn't change his mind by then smile

Note 4

Regardless of google updating the OS. The hardware in the Note 4 is superior to the nexus, hands down. I still have my gs3 and will be upgrading to a note 4 next month. I'm like you and like to do my research before I shell out some major cash. All I can say is that the hardware in the Note 4 is so advanced in specs as compared to alot of phones on the market today, that it will be able to handle many more OS updates and fancier apps in the long haul, due to its processor and memory frame.

Thanks

Thanks so much, this helps. I hand a Pantech now and a Nexus 7 but do not have any experience with Samsung recently. My old phone, before smarthone, was Samsung many years ago and worked great but this is not apples to apples. Nice to hear you will be upgrading after research...
Thanks again.

I have the Nexus 7 tablet

A tablet is not a phone and when I carry it and my phone in my handbag they tend to weigh it down.

Need just one that will provide the same service as a phone and tablet to lighten the load while in my handbag and away from home.

I will still use the Nexus 7 at home when my husband has my computer or I just want to relax on the couch and not set at a computer screen. smile

Nexus 6 has very good specs.

Nexus 6 has very good specs. I would consider Nexus 6 as well. The other advantage of having Nexus 6 is Google updates. Nexus 6 will get OS updates lot faster than Note 4.

The battery is replaceable, but most people can't do it at home. Just like Apple, it's needs to be done by a service technician.

That said, I have 2 Nexus 4's, and a Nexus 5. My first 4 is 20 months old, and still gets great battery life. I wouldn't worry.

Just replaced the battery in my Nexus 7. Not sure if I am charging too long or what. It is the first generation Nexus 7 so is about two or so years old.

Leaning towards Nexus 6 myself

I'm just about at the "time for a new phone" period, and I'm leaning towards the Nexus 6 partly because the one thing I'm not so fond of re Samsung phones is that they have had a habit of pretty much putting a Not Invented Here cruftware equivalent to just about everything Google tends to ship with an OEM Android distribution.

(The GS3, that wasn't too much of an issue as you could root it and remove the cruft. New Samsung kit has Knox on it, though, and in conjunction with locked bootloaders if one gets it on the two actually-usable-outside-a-major-city cell providers...well...that makes it a bit more difficult to remove the cruft grin)

I've been finding I have a preference towards "pure Android" (ran Cyanogenmod on the HTC G2 I had years back, have tended to use "slimmed" ROMs or heavily decrufted ones with my present GS3) and I can always put an alternative launcher on if I don't like stock (Go Launcher has always been a personal favourite of mine). Having a base config and being able to customise to my liking is a bonus for me--including possibly having the easiest root process ever (then again, I also admit to being an incorrigible tinkerer).

As for the "OH NO WHY NO SD CARD?" issue--the trend HAS been very much towards Android phones being Gently Encouraged to not have SD cards since 4.4 KitKat came out (long story short, Microsoft is making Google pay royalties for phones that include drivers to read the EXFAT and FAT32 formats that SD cards use, and there are security issues with not being able to lock down permissions on a FAT32 or EXFAT filesystem the same way they can do with the native filesystem on Android devices) so I've seen the writing on the wall for some time. There is a 64GB option for the Nexus 6, and I do not intend to be using this for a media station or tiny photography studio (if I need something more than point-and-shoot capability, this is why Nikon/Pentax/Canon invented the DSLR)--the directories on my phone that actually take up the most space are for maps for various GPS tools I use, so 64GB should hopefully last me some time.

The lack of swappable battery IS more of an annoyance, but at the same time I'm also Sufficiently Technical that I could swap it out if I had to (I have performed technonecromancy on Macbooks for fun and used to work on other laptops for profit, and have a surface mount soldering station at home if need be grin). The good news is that reports from folks who've used Lollipop have reported battery life HAS improved and there are some encouraging reports on XDA Developers regarding battery life being quite good from folks testing it out. Also, apparently it IS possible to do a "fast top-up" of Nexus 6 batteries with an appropriate charger, so if I can get it back to a reasonable level in 15 minutes it's all good.

(Of note--Samsungs do tend to need the nice ZeroLemon batteries because...well...the S Cruft plus some Samsung specific stuff like Touchwiz and (most notoriously) its media search tools do have notable issues that cause the equivalent of a memory leak, which tends to run down the battery a bit more than with phones that use an AOSP (your Nexuses and the Motorola Moto and Droid families--either pure stock or close to it) or even Sense (HTC) enabled flavors of Android.)

I do like the hardware in Samsung devices, mind. I just wish I didn't have to remove all the S Cruft that they like to pack in that I'll never use and eats the battery life, and I really am not fond of the fact that Samsung now seems just a bit pushy in making sure I can't remove S Cruft thanks to Knox and locked bootloaders. Of course, if you aren't an incorrigible tinkerer like myself, it's probably less of a big deal.

I also do like that the Nexus 6 is confirmed to be subsidy unlocked (you can use it with any carrier in North America--the thing apparently has not only LTE but CDMA AND GSM radios!) and apparently any telco-provider cruft that gets installed is only put on upon the first connection to the Google Play store--and all of it gets installed as data apps, not as system apps, so you can uninstall it from Google Play without rooting (which is a pleasant change). Apparently it's a condition Google had as a condition of letting cell phone companies sell it direct under subsidised plans...and I'm okay with this. Pretty much THAT leaves Titanium Backup and Xposed Framework as two of the major reasons I root.

That said, I'm still debating on whether I will get it from the cell company or Google or Motorola. It largely depends on whom will have a 64GB model first. I need plenty of room for maps for Mapfactor and Locus Pro (both of which work very nicely and use OpenStreetMaps for providers; Locus Pro is admittedly pay but Mapfactor is free and I look forward to playing around with it) and CoPilot grin

Thanks for taking your time in this review

I don't tinker with my phone or tablet. I just load what apps I need and ignore the others.

I have looked at videos and read a lot on line.
I am leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
I take notes on my Nexus 7 for groceries and things to do when we go to town and I like the idea of the stylus and note ability.

I know what you mean about the battery. I can solder also but I have had my Pantech Burst Phone act up and I took the battery out and put it back in and then the phone worked great. With one that is not easily removed I couldn't do that.

I am brain dead just now but there were other neat stuff the Note 4 did that the Nexus 6 didn't. I will remember them shortly, I hope.

But I do love my Nexus 7 and plan on using it at home and on vacation, just want something to take it's place in my handbag and I'm sure the Note 4 and the Nexus 6 would each do that great.

Thanks again for all your notes as they have me thinking again.

Mary, the big thing the Note

Mary, the big thing the Note has compared to the Nexus is the S Pen, which you can use to take those notes or even draw. It doesn't hurt that the battery is replaceable and the storage expandable. To me, the lack of expandable storage is the real deal breaker. It's why I went with a Galaxy S4 instead of a Nexus 5 when given the opportunity.

I have missed the sd on the Nexus 7

I have missed the SD on the Nexus 7. When I want to take movies to show family I have to have a otg cord hanging from the Nexus 7 with an SD card in it.

And the S Pen sounds just like what I need (want) smile

That is a very big difference. My husband said I could have the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. He thinks is might go down if I wait a month or so. I like to buy the unlocked phone just in case I find another plan I like. And if you don't take the pay by month on the phone or the $299, after two years you start to save money. Well as my husband tells me you are just spending a little less, not saving money. smile

Thanks for your information.

I've been a phablet person since the first NOTE came out several years ago.

I've been using the NOTE4 since day one and it has the same problems as the NOTE 3. Constant restarts and it bogs down when you run multiple apps. I'm planning to sell it and start using the Iphone 6 plus that doesn't have these issues. Yes, I've been using the 6 plus along with the NOTE 4.
BTW, I looked at the Nexus but the fact that you can't change the battery and the ability for a micro-sim card took it off my list.

I read

Probably wouldn't use the opening of more than one window, but I think I would love to use the stylus after looking at some videos.

There is so much to consider when trying to find something new. So far it is in this order if I don't change my mind.
1. Samsung Galaxy Note 4
2. IPhone 6 Plus
3. Nexus 6

After a lot of studying Youtube and listening to all of you

I did make up my mind for a Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
My husband is letting me learn to use it before I have to wrap it. smile
I do like it and use the pen a lot.

I was on the 10 cents a minute from AT&T but I went to the unlimited talk, unlimited text, 1 GB high speed data then it drops to very slow for the rest of the month.
I am on the $45.00 a month plan from AT&T but because I am auto pay they give me a $5 discount each month.

I have me a Defender Otterbox ordered in PINK. Can't wait till it comes.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

I bought the Note 4 also and got an Otter box defender for it, don't know if you have had one before, I managed to go through 2 holsters for my galaxy S3 and one of the silicon skins for it, never any damage to the phone.

I have been so worried

I am worried that I may drop the Note 4 or scratch the screen before I get my Otterbox Defender.

I wanted the Otterbox, at $60.00 it was a hard decision but I had already decided on it before I bought the phone as I am buying the phone outright. Then when I bought the phone Walmart had the best price at $720 for AT&T and a $100 gift card offer. That made the decision of the Otterbox even better.

Of course the Otterbox was not in stock so I had to order online and wait for it to come to the store. Of course I ordered the rose one. smile
