Keeping The Windmill Alive - Your Last Trip? – October 2014

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you used it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Road Trip

We did a road trip to Cedar Rapids, IA last week. One of our activities was to do a GeoTour of 24 county parks. Think of sort of a road rally with geocaching at each location included.

On our first day of the tour, we made it to a fairly remote nature preserve and my aging and limping Nuvi 760 lost it's screen calibration. Would not allow selecting anything on the top 1/2 of the screen. Could not enter my unlock PIN to turn it on. There went all my waypoints and POI's! We were pretty far out in the boonies so my backup cell phone navigation wouldn't connect. Used a paper map and a handheld hiking GPS with no routing to get through the first day. This was a lot of country back roads, most not well marked, and many too small to appear on the paper map. So there was a lot of guesswork, backtracking and not so polite language being muttered through that first day. grin

OK - time to pull the plug and retire my old 760. I had been having some miscellaneous hardware issues the last year, anyway. Once we got back to a more populated area and my phone got data again, routed to a Best Buy and selected a 65LM for a replacement. Back at the hotel, Googled and found the method to enter screen calibration mode on the 760 and got it working again! Was able to unlock it and transfer all the waypoints and POI's to the 65LM and we were in business again. And I now have a useful but still limping spare.

I really like the new features of the 65LM and the added screen size. The rest of the trip was uneventful and lots of fun.

I guess I'm not going to make it out of the hospital this week to get my windmill. Maybe I can use the buggy ride to the rehab house tomorrow as my trip.

I think the buggy ride makes a great windmill post. Let us know how it goes.

Well, despite being 4 hours late leaving, it turned out to be a pretty uneventful ride with no surprises. Now, if I can just convice all theses rabid physical therapists that I did not forget how to bath, feed, and dress myself just because I checked into a hospital, I might just get out of here with all my marbles.

We always loved to walk over in Nogales. In the past few years he has said it is unsafe and we do not go to Nogales. Do you ever walk in Nogales? Do you think it is safe?
Do so enjoy shopping there.

This is my first and only time in Nogales, I normally cross the border in Laredo, TX.
I did walk from my motel to a restaurant nearby, but I was the only on on foot to be seen!
Unless you are talking about the Mexican side? I never saw it, I crossed over using the truck crossing.

We would walk over

To the Mexican side and shop for a few hours. It was a lot of fun. We would always buy the vanilla. We loved to browse the shops. A lot of fun. I remember one time with my late father. We were going back to the American side and the guard asked him something and my father made a joke out of it, as he did a lot of things, but the guard didn't think it was funny and asked him a lot more questions than he asked us. My brother won't let us go when we visit as he said there is a lot of drug traffic there now and it is not safe.

I have a number of friends who do this route every year down and back. Not one recommends going to Nogales, Mx. Its like Tijuana or Nuevo Laredo, best to avoid them.
