iOS 8

8.1 has been released.

I'm a member of a firewall forum. Said company went through growing pains earlier on and the users screamed at them when they started releasing new minor versions with bug fixes alongside new 'features' that broke other things. After enough screaming, the company started focusing on bug fixes only for minor releases and saved the new stuff for the majors. Seems similar with IOS 8.1. New features. Unfortunately from what I'm reading around the 'Net, they are still lacking on correcting some of the older bugs that were lurking in IOS 8.0.x. I'm still hanging onto IOS 7.1.2 on my iPhone 5C until I'm satisfied that I won't have to spend hours making it the way I like it again...

I always live on the bleeding edge of Apple software and use my developer account to try things even before release. I haven't had any issues with 8.1 yet on my iPhone 6.

iOS 8.1 running on a iPhone 4S and iPad 2, the oldest devices to make the cut for iOS 8.

All is good. I haven't explored most of the new features yet, but the integration between iOS and Mac OS is good, and I don't even have access to all of it because of my older iPhone and iPad. Using the MacBookPro or iPad for phone calls is very nice.

I must say that Mac OS Yosemite is outstanding. Makes my 2008 MacBookPro seem newer. The new MBP is much more enjoyable with Yosemite.

on my iPhone 6 and iPad Air. I like the wifi calling with my iPad.

iOS 8.1 also fixes issues many were having with Bluetooth connectivity.

As probably most of you know iOS 8.1.1 was released yesterday I think.

For those people that have older devices e.g. I have an iPad 2 and my wife has an iPhone 4S.
This update definitely improves the performance of these older devices. As a matter of fact Apple's release notes specifically state that this release was intended to address this issue of performance on older devices.

Read the release notes and decide if you will update, but my experience has been that it definetly has improved the perfromance.
Remember they are older devices and they will not perform at the rate of the newer devices BUT this update has made there performance improve and they are definetly tolerable again.

8.1.1 has helped my iPad 2 greatly. Yippee I can hold out on buying a new one for a little while longer.

Downloaded and installed without incident.

Thanks for the info posted here. I waited for the newest version and installed it last night. All is good on all devices.

Downloaded and installed on wife's IPad 2 and she is now a happy camper.Last two updates especially the largest one slowed her unit down and she was ready to trade it.

Could not get a FaceTime call mirrored on our Apple TV to rotate to landscape mode with my new iPhone 6 and iOS 8.1.1

Found these in Apple Support (currently no solution):

  Apple TV using FaceTime and ios8 the image does not display the image the correct way

A few bug fixes and fix for lost ringtones.

There is a list of enhancements listed on the announcement page for 8.3, but the only thing that I've noticed so far is that the Emoji keyboard has a lot of new ones to select from. I'm not convinced that all the extras are really needed as it makes for a larger group to wade through.

I've been running the betas on one device; 8.3 cleans up some nagging bugs as well as closes some security issues.

This helped clear up or improve some "issues" with battery life, wifi function and FaceTime for me.

Is now available for iPhone 4s and later, iPod touch 5th generation and later, iPad 2 and later.

While most of the update deals with Apple Music, there are some fun security updates included (well, I think they're fun...) Even if you're not using Apple Music, I'd do the update...

And if you have a Mac running 10.10, PLEASE do the 10.10.5 update that came out today -- lots of security stuff.

And you have been updating Flash every few days? You can set Flash preferences to allow Adobe to update Flash automagically (it won't hurt), but those automatic updates may not come in for a couple of days.
