Is the 5" Nuvi Navigator Screen Obsolete?

Given the increased amount of information available on more recent Garmin Nuvi navigators, has the 5" Nuvi screen become obsolete? I'm not only referring to the ever more common split screen "photo realistic" exit view, but also increased map detail information, increasing on-screen data dashboards, LT info etc. Would you expect Garmin to increase it's 6" Nuvi availability, say for the 2014 Christmas season? Surely someone in accounting can find a profit margin expansion to this segment of Garmin legacy hardware. idea

I bought weeks ago my new Garmin nüvi 2597LMT 5-Inch Portable Vehicle GPS. (I replaced my old nüvi® 780). 5 Inches in my oinion is a perfect size if you consider portability factor. Also, the displayed information looks good for me.

Not needed

My 5 inch 1490 is big enough for me.
My Prius GPS has a 9 inch screen and it shows just as much information as the Garmin. I have it split in halve and the right half displays what services are at each interchange coming up while driving on the interstate and what direction you are traveling.
My 1490 fits in my shirt pocket when I get out of the car.
People next might want a 19 inch tv on their dash.
You are supposed to be driving the car and not looking at a screen.

New Nuvi 2797LMT

I just purchased a new 2797lmt which has a 7 inch screen. I love it. As we get older, our eyes are not what they use to be. With my 5" I had to use reading glasses, not now.

5 inch fine for me

My wife has the smaller screen size which is a little small for my taste, but 5 inch works great and is still portable. Plenty of people use their iphones for directions which is smaller.

5"fine with me

I have the NUVI2555LMT. I use the bean bag mount, in the left hand corner of my dash. The display size is more than adequate and my view through the windshield is totally unaffected.

Like the 5"

I agree, I really like my existing 5" display for my Nuvi.

I have a 4.3" nuvi 265,

I have a 4.3" nuvi 265, would think that the 5" would be a great addition for size wise.

5 inch screens

5 inch seems to fit will as smartphones are 5 to 5.5 inches and are ideal in terms of screen size and storage.

The very 1st streetpilot was huge and gps should be small enought to fit in pockets or carry aorund if using the walking directions. 7inch is too clumsy to walk around in - if i need a 7 inch i rather use the 8 inch tablets as they can do more than just GPS.

Bigger does not mean better- and Size does matter.
IMO.

5" are minimum to me, 6"

5" are minimum to me, 6" would be better, not sure about 7" screens. This is only based on vehicle use not carrying around use.

Perfect and Portable

5" is perfect on the dash. Not too large for putting in a shirt or coat pocket or a pant/shorts cargo pocket. I used a Magellan 4.3 for years and would not go back to that small view. But I think the 7" would be too intrusive to the view. Even though most states probably don't enforce the laws relating to GPS placement, it is still worth considering. Could put a bite in your vacation $$.

I like the 7XX & 8XX

Wish the would make more that fit the 750 tray, screen size is fine. The newer models have too much useless info, just need enough to get to where I'm going, Its a "GPS"

Hey Larry ...

Hey Larry, - how's the WEIGHT of that 2797, and how do you have it mounted? My now TINY device (4.3 inch) is currently mounted using one of the "vent mounts", and I wonder if the 7 inch device would rip my vents out - cool.

I have a 2797LMT and us it with Garmins friction mount on the dash my 2011 Chevy Silverado. Works very well

I am afraid the units size and weight would not be kind to an AC vent.

I like my 1690 with the 5"

I like my 1690 with the 5" screen. To me a 5.5" screen would be perfect, but that's not available.

Not a Good Idea

I’m not sure which older unit you have but my trusty 4.3 inch Nuvi 265 weighs 5.4 oz compared to 12.4 oz for the 2597. I would avoid using a vent mount.

There are a lot of other mount options out there like the RAM types:
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/...

They’re a bit pricey but will last a lifetime. Changing GPS units is easy with the purchase of a relatively cheap cradle to fit the new unit. The rest of the mount can be reused.

I use the TT 1605

which has a 6" screen, in my pickup...perfect fit and good readability.
