Home Icon on a Garmin 3597LMT HD

Does anyone know if it is possible to install a custom icon for your "home" location?

@jamills706

Did you get a new device? Your profile says 2555.

Saved Places

You could create a single entry POI for your home and have a "custom" icon.

Or, I think you can "edit" a Saved Place and select one of the provided icons. Be sure to "turn off" the device and then reboot it to make the edit permanent.

Although

Although you maybe able to edit the "saved place" icon, you could only replace it with one of the other "ugly" built in icons, AFAIK. That's not really replacing the default with a custom icon. wink

The problem with the custom POI idea, as far as I could see, would be you'd end up with both the default Home icon and the custom one appearing on the screen. The 3597 will let you show custom POI icons on the map screen along with those big ugly ones that come built in, BUT your only options is to show all of them or turn them all off. There is no pick and choose available.

Embedded or Separate

Are the icons embedded/coded into a specific file or are they a separate entity. I am not a programmer, but what I was reading triggered a couple of gray cells ... kind of uncommon these days laugh out loud It seems to me that if they are a separate entity that they could be replaced, but then again maybe not.

Embedded

in the firmware

Symbol extractor

One of our members, TurboCC, has written Symbol Extractor
(see http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/SymbolExtractor#Symbol%20Extr...)

I have never used it but it implies that you ran replace symbols if your unit is one of those compatible with his program.

If I understand the instructions, you must have first extracted a file from firmware.

I would

I would be careful using Turbo's program. As we know he hasn't been doing updates to any of his programs for a couple of years now and although most of them still work fine this particular symbol program has this statement in the readme file:

"reported working on Nuvi models 765, 2x5 and Zumo 660 firmware only, but could probably work on the entire nuvi 7x5 family. Not working on 7x0 family."

I would be very careful playing with symbols embedded in the firmware of newer Nuvi models especially when the author already knows that the program doesn't work on the now, very old, 7x0 devices.

I agree

Tread carefully if thinking about updating the firmware.

I use a POI as my home, and that way I can use any icon I want. Just name the image file the same as the POI file and have them in the same directory when you load it.

I'm not

I'm not sure what a Home POI buys the OP. He has a 3597 which displays the HOME location with a pretty ugly icon that is built into the firmware. Unless I've missed something on my 3597, the POI icon will display along with that built in icon and there is no setting that will allow you to display just one or the other. The only setting I've found is in Map Layers and all that does is allow you to display all POI and built in icons on the map screen, or none of them.

I use a custom one on my 1350

Problem with that is, and I suspect all units, is that you get the custom and the built in one. The custom is spot on but the built in one is about 3 houses off. I don't recall anywhere in the forums where you can turn off the built in one on any units.

address vs location

I predict that your built-in icon was set using Find Address. If you clear the home location and reset it using Save Location while you're parked in your driveway, it'll also be spot on. All nuvis make assumptions to come up with street address locations and these can easily have your home address many 10s-100s of feet off and even on the wrong side of the street from your actual home's location at times. Make sure you've got a good satellite fix first.
