Any good deals out there right now? Need a new Garmin!

Hello!
I am one of the fortunate ones to grab the 2460LMT when it was only $99 on ebay in November 2012, thanks to one of you posting that they were there!!

I took it on vacation last summer and promptly dropped it on a sidewalk. A portion of the screen was blank, but I was able to see enough of it to continue using it for that trip. I got home and decided to open it and look inside. Now there is no power at all.

Fast forward to now....I think I am finally at the point where I will admit defeat and buy a new GPS.

Sooooooooooooooo.......does anyone know if there are any super fantastic deals out there? We're going on vacation in a few weeks and I sure would like to bring one with us.

Thanks friends smile
Linda

Deals

I also was fortunate in getting a 2460LMT although I think mine was a factory refurb from one of the daily sale sites rather than eBay.

This may be more than you want, but then, maybe you're due for a treat. Many folks here at The Factory think the following is by far the best Garmin device they've ever seen. There are several good threads here at The Factory discussing the model.

The $330 MSRP nuvi 3597LMTHD can be found at The GPS Store for $220 as a Factory Refurb with full 1-yr Garmin warranty--and if mine is a representative example, other than coming in a plain white box, it's indistinguishable from a new device.

If you pursue this option, when purchasing, look for a Promo Code that will give you free shipping. (I didn't think to do this.)

The 3597 is a 5" model and quite thin, so you may also want to look into getting a case as well. Even if you have a 5" case for your 2460, the 3597 is so thin that it may slip out. I chose the Garmin brand 5" Velcro-sealed case which conveniently was on sale at the time at Best Buy.

Happy shopping and try to keep your new one off the cement twisted

New GPS

I only know of a couple off hand.

Without knowing what your budget/price range is...

The Garmin 3590LMT is on sale at Costco for $199.99, free shipping, you probably have to pay sales tax.
The Garmin 3597LMT refurbished is $219.99 at thegpsstore, free shipping, and probably no tax since you're in AZ.

Edit: CraigW beat me to it, anyway, the promo code for free shipping at thegpsstore is "FREEG".

I'll agree with the recommendation for the 3597. I upgraded from an 885 to the 3597 and it is an excellent unit. I also went for the low price at the time and got a factory fresh for about $280 from Amazon.

I'll add my name to those recommending the 3597LMTHD from theGPSStore. I got mine back in January (when the price was still $249). I have been very happy with it, and the $219 price is a real bargain.

3590 LMT

If you are a Costco member, they were selling the Nuvi 3590LMT for $199.99 after $50 off. That was last week. I haven't been in Costco this week to see if it's still that price.

It is also available online from Costco for $199.99 through the end of this month.

My Good Deal

I purchased my 2460LMT off Craigslist for $40. It came with everything plus a slip case (which I don't use). I did purchase the FM Traffic cable for $25 off eBay. I sold my 2 year old Magellan 1440 for $20 on Craigslist. I think I have a great GPS for $45.

Just Bought Nuvi

I just picked up a Nuvi-2555LMT yesterday at BJ's for $119. It is an intermediate model with lifetime maps and traffic. I only played with it for a few minutes yesterday and it seems fine. This unit does not have bluetooth but does have tts. Tigerdirect seems to have some decent deals on new and refurbished units too.

Good Luck.

jtakw did your 3597LMT arrive? I am wondering about what comes with it, the pictures on the Garmin website look like the suction cup has a magnetic cradle. Did you receive the cradle, and will it work with a friction mount too? I have two friction mounts (one from my old 255W and the other from my 2460, they are different).

This is what is supposed to be in the box from thegpsstore "Each Garmin Nuvi 3597 LMTHD comes with: Nuvi 3597 LMT Preloaded City Navigator NT for USA, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Barts, and Jamaica, Lifetime traffic and Map Updates, HD FM traffic receiver with vehicle power cable, Vehicle suction cup mount with speaker, USB cable, Quick start manual and a One-Year Warranty."

The GPS Store 3597 refurb comes with everything you'd find with a new one, except for the white box replacing the "new" box.

Yes, the device comes with the 3597 cradle and the cradle uses the same ball joint as earlier nuvi models, so the cradle will snap into the ball of a friction mount, air vent mount, suction cup mount, etc. allowing you to use your older friction mounts with the 3597 cradle and GPS--think of your hip socket when connecting or disconnecting the cradle socket from the ball of the friction mount. The 3597 and its magnetic cradle are both one of a kind so no other nuvi cradle will give the GPS its power and traffic signal.

When this (or any other 3597) arrives, you're ready to go and can use any other Garmin mount that features the ball and socket connection. The 3597 power cord connects to the mount rather than to the GPS (a very desirable feature), etc. About all you'll want to do is register the device (requires Garmin Express on your computer), update what will most likely be an out-of-date map, potentially update software including adding extra voices, etc. You may also want to download the Owners Manual (not included with any recent nuvi purchase). Like most of the new nuvi models, there are differences with the 3597 and your old 2460, so expect to spend some time figuring everything out and remembering that YouTube and The Factory Garmin forum and members here are quite helpful.

Here are some YouTubes showing the 3597 cradle connecting to a ball:

3590 from Costco

I bought a 3590 LMT from Costco several months ago. The price has dropped down to around $200 now. I like it very much. Especially like that it doesnt say "recalculating", but rather just changes the route if you miss a turn! I like the "Voice Command" feature for hands free navigating. It uses .wav files rather than .mp3, so have to use sox.exe to install custom POIs. No big deal, since alot of the GPS units do not use .mp3 files any more. Oh, and it has lifetime maps.

@Myemerald

Yes, my 3597 arrived yesterday (Friday).
CraigW is correct, it comes with everything as a new unit, no scratches, looks just like new.
I've updated the map, software, transferred my favorites, etc. with GE, took it for a test run this morning, and everything works great except the Bluetooth.

Soooo, I have a question for everyone; Garmin's website says the 3597 is Bluetooth compatible with iphone, I tried pairing it with my iphone 4 and my wife's iphone 4s, neither will pair. Does anyone know of a fix?
Also, I only have American English, American English-Michelle, and American English-Samantha on the 3597, are there other voices available?
Thanks.

Thanks.

Yes, there are other voices. But they can't be found with WebUpdater. You need to use Garmin Express or use the myGarmin web site. GE offers all English language updates as an immense 943MB single update. myGarmin lets you pick and choose. To use myGarmin, with your nuvi attached to your computer, log into myGarmin, go to myDashboard, go to Software Updates, go to Optional Updates, go to Voices, then pick and choose the voices you want to install. (Your 3597 probably needs to be registered to you to use myGarmin and oddly, you must use Garmin Express to register your nuvi these days.)

Good question. Now if only The Factory made a commission on the sales...

It may well be that Garmin is simply unloading their supply of new (rebranded as refurbs) 3597s prior to releasing a new 2014 (maybe called a 2015 model) nuvi.

But that begs the question: what feature can we want (or feel that we need) beyond what the 3597 offers today?

Can't use PayPal

Ok, now I'm going to cry crying because I can't use Bill Me Later or PayPal for my purchase at The GPS Store.

Thanks alandb, that is probably what I'll do. Although right now I am back on the kick of trying to repair the 2460LMT that dropped to the ground when I threw it at CraigW smile It's actually really bugging me now, I want to fix it! I know how to replace the screen, but there is no power anymore and I don't know enough about the inner workings of the thing to do any good. I don't want to buy a new screen if I can't even get it to turn on. The battery should still be good because I only used it for a very short time before dropping it.

I'm sure I will give up soon and purchase the 3597, it's just that I really want to fix the 2460. Have you ever seen a diagram of the insides, that might tell me what each part is?

2460

There are some youtube videos that show disassembling the unit to replace the screen and battery. I have not seen anything that takes it apart further.

It is possible you damaged the system board as well as the screen when you dropped it. What happens when you plug it into your computer? Does it mount as a drive where you can see the files? Does it appear to be charging the battery? If so, leave it plugged in for a while so the battery gets charged. However, don't leave it unattended. If something inside is shorted or broken, it may overheat and you would need to quickly unplug it so it doesn't catch fire.

I agree. Given that there may be more than just a LCD problem right now, I wouldn't suggest buying and replacing the screen or digitizer only to find that it still won't work due to a bad main board, ribbon cable, or some such thing. As suggested, giving it a good full charge and maybe opening it up again and looking for or resetting loose cable connectors to see what you can do is worth considering, but beyond that I would stop at this point and see what Jim suggests. Seeing that a computer still recognizes it and allows file transfers is a good sign. If the battery was really depleted, keep it charging from the computer USB connection for several hours before testing it.

Keep in mind the options so you don't pay more to fix your old 2460 $99 special than to replace it. I see used 2460LMTs on eBay going for roughly $70-80 (and replacement touch screens and digitizers in the $30-40 range)--and once you're above the used nuvi range of values, you're approaching the ability to buy a new or factory refurbed nuvi LMT model with a warranty. For a repair to be worth considering, it really depends on what sharcnet thinks needs to be done and what the total bill will be.

A lot may depend on whether the 2460 uses a single LCD/digitizer part or if the LCD and digitizer are two parts that may both be defective. Jim's price list suggests a LCD replacement is around $65-70 and a digitizer replacement is around $50.

The fact that it is mounting as a drive is a good sign and tells us that there is at least some basic functionality on the system board. Of course there could still be damage besides the screen,

I agree with the others to contact Sharcnet. They have had really good endorsements from other members who have used them for repair. That said, you will need to decide if it is worth the cost of the repair or if you would be better off taking that cost as a down payment on a new model.

This -- there are some deals to be had out there but you'll have to do your due diligence.

I picked up a 2597LMT for $55; came with the sandbag, suction cup, carrying case but not the traffic cable. Updated it with Garmin Express and am pretty happy except it doesn't have the Red Light Camera feature that my wife's TomTom has.

The TomTom has the traffic feature and quite frankly I don't think it's of much use since I'd usually check Google Maps traffic instead, anyway.

Thinking about picking up another 2597 since it's got the auto on/off feature when left plugged in, plus the voice command, which is pretty nifty!

I agree with everything. It's best to buy straight from Amazon or a "fulfilled by Amazon" vendor. When buying from another vendor through Amazon, give them the same due diligence as you would an eBay seller, etc.

However, I see that Prime Deal now has the 3597 listed as backordered.

Especially for Prime Members

Amazon Prime Members get free two day shipping, which makes buying straight from Amazon or "Fulfilled by Amazon" especially a benefit.
