I just bought a 2460LMT, took out yesterday and did not hear any sounds from the custom POI's that I installed. I used POI loader just the same way that I did on old 1490. The only setting I can see for sound is single tone or continuous tone. Am I missing something or not available?
Tested a hard reset ?
Tested a hard reset ?
yep
that was one of the first things tried when nothing else worked

still nothing
Well, I got the exchange 2460, loaded poi's, doing the same thing, they load but no icons or sound. I tried to load from my wife's windows 7 computer forgot to put sox in poiloader folder got error so loaded sox, loaded checked, loaded did simulation, nothing. It must be something else besides the unit, but I sure can't find it.

1490?
Do you still have the old 1490?
Nuvi Folder
When you attach the 2460 to your computer, you should see the Windows "Auto Play" dialog - one of which options it presents is to "open Folder to view files". Take that option so that you get a Windows Explorer dialog that says something like "Computer > Garmin nuvi (X)" (where "X" is the drive letter that your computer has assigned) at the top.
I think you should find in the upper right corner of Explorer a box that says "Search Garmin nuvi (X)".
Into that box, please type ".gpi" (without the quotes) and press enter.
If you have followed previous instruction, the only files the search should find will be in X:\POI folder (once again where "X" is the drive letter assigned to your nuvi).
Please report what you find in the search.
What POIs

What POIs are you trying to load?
When POI LOader finishes, how many POIs did it say it put on your nuvi?

When you do a "simulation" how did you pick the location to which you did the "Where To?"?
I assume you did answer the nuvi question "Simulate driving this route?"
Almost Out Of Suggestions
The two POI's I sent you work perfectly on my 2460.
Since the replacement 2460 is behaving the same, I believe it has to be you don't have something correct in your settings.
The Redlight and Rest Area POI's I sent you were created with ALERT in "Miles". Please make sure your settings are in MILES.
Tools> Settings> System> Units (Should Display Miles)
Also please double check again that your Alerts are enabled
Tools> Settings> Navigation> Automobile>Proximity Points (you must scroll down to the very last entry)
Now in Proximity Points Alerts, you must have this enabled for "CUSTOM POI'S" by having a check mark next to it.

2 separate issues
ewayne has two separate issues. Icons are one issue and alerts is the other. Either will operate without the other. I can display an icon without an audible alert or I can play an alert without an icon (by default a dot shows). We need to stop trying to resolve both issues together and work on one or the other. My suggestion would be the sound or alert issue first.
Problems with playing custom alerts is normally one of three things: a) wrong version of SOX; b) SOX in the wrong folder/directory; and, c) WAV file.
We know he has the correct version of SOX but we don't know where he has it on his computer. There are two places it could be and that depends on how his computer is set up and the OS it is using. We know it has to be in the same folder POI Loader.EXE resides. If there are multiple copies of POI Loader, then they need to be removed so there is only the single instance. Once we get an alert to sound, then the other issue becomes fairly simple.

2460
1---I don't have the 1490 anymore
2---did search for .gpi, one found, G:\POI
3---POI's loaded >>172117
4---simulated to 1 poi location,ie "fast food"when arrived just the flag
5---Proximity Point Alerts checked.
6---Latest version sox---in poiloader folder
7---only one instance of poiloader installed
has me stumped, I know it should work.

I'm also looking for that
I'm also looking for that feature on my 3597LMTHD

I have no idea about this, but I am going to ask what is the setting of the "Audio" setting - just above the "Alerts" setting.
Is it "Single Tone", "Continuous Tone", or "Off"
My 2595 is set to "Single Tone".
Mine is single tone also
Mine is single tone also

This thread is getting quite lengthy with no solution.
I was not aware that it will play an audible but not display the icon at the same time, or vice versa.
I have sent Ed two .gpi files that work properly on my 2460. That would rule out any incorrect POILoader or .sox issues using Windows 8.
My final suggestion would be if Ed does get the audible alert, but no icon, then change the settings in "Map Detail" to MORE.
Tools> Settings >Navigation> Automobile> Map Detail
When nearing the POI's location if the icon still doesn't appear on the map, try hitting the + sign to zoom in further on the map. Perhaps then the icon will appear.

icons
I took out all the sound files, now the icons all show, so must be in the wav files.

Ed,
One of the best ways I have found to debug problems in programming and/or electronics is to make the problem as simple as possible.

One way you "may" have already done this is to delete ALL .gpi files from the unit. If you have not done this, why don't you try it.
muell9k states that he has sent you two .gpi files that work properly on his 2460. That would rule out any incorrect POILoader or .sox issues using Windows 8.
If you were to copy one of those two .gpi files to G:\POI and then try driving and/or simulation, we would be interested in the results.
Awaiting Results
Ed had emailed me and requested I re-send the Redlight and Rest Area working .GPI files since apparently he lost them.
I have sent him the two files again along with the two wave files that go with the POI's. He just needs to click on the wave files to hear the announcement of the alert.
I also asked him to follow jgermann's advice and delete all existing POI's on the unit and only load one of the files I sent for test purposes.
Ed,
If driving to the location to test the POI is not practical for you, perform a simulated route.
Click on the link below to learn how to do it. It's the seond post down by charlesd45.

Result
I did a simulated run(didn't want to drive to Ventura)for the red light camera, It did give the sound for the camera, so we know it will work. I just don't know what else to try, except charlesd45 wants me to try something, will try it and let you all know what happens

2460
I tried the suggestions from charlesd45, it did not work. I have deleted all .gpi from the unit. The file from muell9k did work. I don't know what else to try. I know I have all the right files and in the right place, it just does not work when I install the wav's

Ed,
When you say the file from muell9k worked, do you mean you heard a voice? I assume his .gpi file had a wav file loaded with it.
worked
worked like it should work. The same way the ones I put in should work but don't. Yes, heard the voice.

Now we're getting somewhere. Since the .GPI files I sent you work properly we can rule out the 2460 being at fault or it's settings.
It seems like the problem is wave related.
Below is a link that you can create your own wave sound that always has worked for me on any POI file I created.
http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php
Now for a final tip, once you have your newly created .wav file, and the .csv, &.bmp files, you will rename them by adding a keyword into their names.
That keyword will be "safety". By adding safety to the files name you are assured you will get the alert to play. There are other keywords you can use but to simplify matters we will use safety. Your files will look like this when loading into POILoader.
Rest Areas_safety.csv
Rest Areas_safety.bmp
Rest Areas_safety.wav
Use the keyword sparingly, you wouldn't want it on a POI such as McDonalds, since it most likely annoy you because of so may locations.
Here's a link that discusses some additional keywords.

@ed
Glad to know that the voice from muell9k's .gpi file worked.
It must be something simple that is going wrong because - once you learn the technique - it will become straightforward.
I encourage you to read the Garmin link at the end of muell9k's post above.
Note that it says:
POI Loader loads all .csv and .gpx data files saved in a particular directory. When creating or downloading Custom POI data files, it is recommended that you save all the data files you want to upload to your device in the same directory.
muell9k has given you a simple way to insure that the voice alert will sound every time by the use of the keyword "safety", as follows:
Rest Areas_safety.csv
Rest Areas_safety.bmp
Rest Areas_safety.wav
Note the fact that POI LOader works on files in a "PARTICULAR" directory. All the files for a certain POI must be in that directory. You already know that the names of the files to the left of the extensions must be identical.
I keep insisting that you will learn quicker if you will only work with one POI file "set" at a time.
Pick one POI file from poi-factory that has at least one location near you. Download it to a folder called c:\ewayne.
Rename the file to ewayne_safety.csv
Follow meull9k's link to the att site and create you own .wav file. Download it to c:\ewayne. Rename the .wav file to ewayne_safety.wav
There are now two files in the folder c:\ewayne - a .csv file and a .wav file.
Do a test right now with these two files.
It makes no difference at all for testing purposes that the POI is named ewayne. When you see ewayne in the Custom POI location, you will know what it is and all we care about is that your nuvi has accepted a number of points of interest and attached a voice file.
Run POi Loader; point it to c:\ewayne; let it run; go out and see if it works.
I have been doing one file
I have been doing one file set at a time, but will try
muell9k's instructions. something has to work

safety
I put safety in the file names, loaded, still just get the ding sound, no voice, the icon is there. I also went to the web page, made a file, it didn't work either.
