Reporting Dumb Garmin Map and Voice Errors

I occasionally run across routing errors generated by Garmin, and wonder where to report these. For example, Eastbound from North Shore in Pittsburgh on I-279 (Ft Duquesne Bridge) towards Monroeville on I279, Garmin guideance and Junction View guides you to exit left at Grant Street, rather than continue straight to 279.

Voice directions in this area always convert "Penn" to "Pennsylvania". This is wrong. Penn Avenue, William Penn Highway are proper names. We really don't need Jill to rename him to William Pennsylvania.

Any way to report these incipit errors? I'm sure you have a personal favorite in your area.

mispronunciations

I have heard some weird pronunciations before but actually changing the names of streets and etc is definitely wrong. Thanks for trying to be helpful, Jill, but no thanks.

Dumb and dumber

There's a road near us called Tech Road, and the Garmin voice constantly refers to it as Technical Road.
What is even more frustrating is the routes that Garmin picks. I use my Garmin primarily to see the speed limits on the roads, and warnings of speed cameras and RLCs. Occasionally, the Garmin will select a route off the Interstate and across town to get from point A to point B. I have Garmin set to select the fastest route, not the shortest. When I disregard the route and continue on the Interstate, Garmin recalculates, and the arrival time shows up as earlier than the cross town route. Huh? It should factor in traffic lights somehow, as well as road speed limits. Not so. Beginning to think using my smartphone with Waze might be a better choice than dumbed down Garmin.

Two points need to be made here:
1. For each given segment of road it uses a database estimated average rate of advance, not speed limit.
2. The computation used does not succeed in checking all possible routings, and is thus not guaranteed to find the single routing which optimizes to the criterion you've requested (whether to time, distance, or fuel consumption)

Karen

Whenever Karen sees a MM, instead of saying 'Mile Marker', she says 'Millimeter'.

Odd

Check TrafficTrends

Personally, I noticed that with my 2350LMT, I got much more direct routing when I turned off Traffic Trends.

It was a good idea that didn't work out correctly in practice.

Delaware Anza Blvd

Even though MM is also a standard abbreviation for millimeter, but millimeter accuracy for driving or walking??

Here in the SF Bay area, with some versions of firmware for my 2495, Jill would pronounce:

De Anza Blvd as Delaware Anza
XXX Ct as XXX Connecticut

Sometimes, it feels like comic relief. Sometimes it is quite annoying.

MM

And I always thought MM stood for Motorcycle Mama. laugh out loud ... guess I spend too much time here at the Factory!

I do not think it is odd! Australia has changed to the metric system in 1966. So therefore mm or MM is millimeter.

I am sure that the American Jill would NOT say that!

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

That's Interesting...

Whenever I see "MM" I always think "Marilyn Monroe"! grin

Of course I guess this dates me a little bit. wink

Not so easily fixed

This is not as easily fixed as you might think. The text-to-speech engine takes the text that is imbedded in the Navteq map and then pronounces it according to a lookup table. So a lot of the pronunciations come from whatever names are in the map, like the 'correct' pronunciations below.
Jones Dr = "Jones Drive"
Jones Dr. = "Jones Doctor"
Br = "Business Route"
Br. = "Branch"
etc.

We're a little at the mercy of the consistency or lack thereof from the various municipalities that report their street names to Navteq. There are some downright funny ones, that's for sure.
