Attention iPhone/iPad users: iOS7 release soon

Likely 1PM US Eastern Time... iTunes 11.1 is now available as well - for best results you should install that before updating your iPhone/iPad to iOS7 .

Happy downloading.

I've been running the iOS7 betas... it will be like having a new phone...

Betas--

You can tell the folks running the beta versions from ten or fifteen feet away, it's that noticeable (particularly here in Silicon Valley).

Nuvi 2460, 680, DATUM Tymserve 2100, Trimble Thunderbolt, Ham radio, Macintosh, Linux, Windows

It is out now...

And also available as an Over The Air update too... if you update OTA, you'll need to update iTunes prior to a wifi sync or back-up via iTunes to a computer...

I'm Happier Already

It's downloading... three devices to update.

7.0 Already Done

I have the update up and running on my iPhone 5 (which I have had for 3 weeks) I sprung for a new one for $98.00 at Walmart before it was discontinued. (I replaced my iPhone 4)

iOS 7 is a huge change and rather smooth. Reports are saying that iOS 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 are floating around and getting tested and likely an update in mid-late October when the "Next Big Thing" is announced.

7.0.1 will be out with the release of the iPhone5S and 5C on Friday... and it's said that iOS 7.0.2 and even 7.1 have been seen in web server logs by people who hyper-analize them and try to be first to tweet about it... smile

Up And Running

Running on the iPhone and iPad.

Very clean and easy on the eyes.

Apple servers must be getting hammered.

The revised Apple apps are very nice.

I'm running iOS 7 on an iPad2 and 4S, and no detrimental impact on performance, specifically speed. Both devices are instantly responsive, no lagging.

good to hear diesel

The Navigon app updated this afternoon - gives it the iOS7 make-over... looks good.

Installed to wife's iPad 2. Runs smooth and the photos look great. Some changes in locations of certain tabs but nothing major.

Adoption Rate

One analytics firm is saying the adoption rate for iOS7 may be as high as 30%... in less than one day... and the new phones don't release until tomorrow...

Most upgraded, some holding off--

Most of our devices are now on the full release, holding off on a couple to see how things shake out.

My son uses his iPad to do live sound mixing (using the wonderful program QLab from Figure53.com), and isn't about to upgrade the day before a show!

He's learned something from his dad -- some times it's best to let others test out the bleeding edge!

Noticed That

Navigon has a much nicer feel now that it has the iOS 7 treatment.

Interestingly, the StreetPilot app has a Navigon emulation mode where it morphs to have the look and feel of the Navigon app.

The StreetPilot app has not been updated yet, or I haven't noticed it yet.

So Far, So Good

I have gone down every branch in iOS 7, tried every switch and setting to be had... it all works. At least whatever there is for iPhone 4S hardware.

The Control Center is very nicely done. And how open apps are selected or closed is incredibly simple and effective. The new way to get to spotlight is even more obvious and intuitive. The ease to getting to the flashlight is fantastic.

Some things I thought that needed to get smarter, smoother, or less "just not quite right" have been addressed.

I'm always concerned about running new system software on earlier hardware, the new software has usually outgrown the earlier hardware and the resulting experience is slow. Not here, not even on the iPad2. I'm not seeing any lagging, hesitation or slowdown at all.

What I find most pleasing is the graphics. Everything is easier to read, clearer and easy on the eyes. The graphics on the non-Retina iPad2 are very good, that screen looks even better now. This really applies to the Apple apps. I think it might have to do with the use of color.

And something I have been waiting forever... the icon for the Clock app finally shows the actual time on the icon. Why that took so long baffles me. That was something that was clearly way too obvious.

I'm looking forward to a 5S in a couple weeks.

That NO ONE is allowed to criticise the chosen/anointed supplier of cell phones.

Everyone else, yes of course ... it is even encouraged by the "leaders".

Isn't it just sad to see the blind partisanship in everything these days. Makes for poor discussions also.

Makes you wonder why apple supporters are panicking so much these days?

No one is panicking. Other than denizens who prefer other mobile platforms who are intent on being... well, like you're being....

Good start ... You really do understand that others may prefer other platforms.

When a platform satisfies a need, it necessarily becomes a valid option.

As you probably already know, popularity was/is/always will be fleeting...As we have seen with Motorola, BB, Apple, Samsung etc. No need to deride any of them ... they usually end up doing that indirectly to themselves anyway ...

I must be missing something... please explain.

So why do you deride Apple products and those that use them?

Design

And still the iPhone does not have a memory card slot. Thank goodness Apple follows great design principles.

Another great feature is AirDrop, a simple way to share data bumplessly with others nearby.

Apple Ads vs. Ads From The Others

Apple ads show off the goodness of their products.

Android (Google), Samsung, Microsoft, et al, ads attack Apple products and attempt to deride Apple products.

Apple can't even see the competition in the rearview mirror anymore.

Android (Google), Samsung, Microsoft, et al, are admitting inferiority when they can't find anything to promote about their own products and have to resort to attempting to deride Apple products.

We aren't talking about what is and isn't a valid option. Where did that come from?

nature of the beast... some people have a visceral hate of anything Apple and are compelled to "pee in the pool" when they see people actually liking Apple...

thanks for the headsup on this also.

One problem my wife had with IOS7 is that she suddenly lost all US holidays from her calendar.

It took a bit of internet searching to find the solution of what to type in and where to type it for US Holidays to show up.

Solution?

I just did a search, something like "Apple Calendars US Holidays", then resubscribed.

Tap Settings Tap Mail,

Tap Settings
Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Scroll down and tap Add Account...
Tap Other
Tap Add Subscribed Calendar
In the server field, input: ical.mac.com/ical/US32Holidays.ics - then tap Next
On the next screen, change the name of the calendar under "Description" if you choose - then tap Save

Calendar

Does that create a whole new calendar or add the holidays to all existing calendars (ie will I have to add back all my appointments?)?
Thanks

--
ChefDon

Calendar

No, it is a separate Calendar that adds events to your existing Calendar. You can show or not show it if you open the list of Calendars you are viewing.
