I've been trying to use TourGuide POIs on my Garmin Nuvi 40LM and I haven't been able to get them to work. I've read a lot of posts and have plenty of things to check out but, before I drive myself crazy, can anyone tell me if TourGuides even work on the 40LM? I need it doesn't support MP3s but, can I use TourGuides if I convert to WAVs? Or should I just give up?
Thanks in advance.

A TourGuide does require voice. After all it is a TourGuide. You must use a wav file.

Custom POIs?
Have you succeeded loading Custom POIs before trying TourGuides? Custom icons? Custom voices? POI Loader in Manual Mode with alerts? If not, I suggest you install some Custom POIs first and can route yourself to a Custom POI as a destination and see the icon, etc. Once this works, setting a TourGuide will be a snap.
Also, are you using a PC or Mac? There are slight differences in what's needed for any of the above custom features.
Good luck.

TourGuides work well on my Nuvi 50LM. I believe it has the same operating system as your 40LM, plus a larger screen. I do use .wav files for sound. One of my favorite sounds is a sound clip from the movie "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" starring Humphrey Bogart.

I liked craig's suggestion that you get any custom POI working before you step up to TourGuides.
First, I would ask you to go do http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393 if you have not already done so. It is CRITICAL that you have certain settings for folders and this tutorial tells you how to set them. One of the problems this tutorial will eliminate is double extension which are a particular problem with TourGuides because it keeps you from having the EXACT SAME name for each of the three files involved.
Let's assume you already have worked out a custom POI file and have made sure you will not have double extensions.
Start small and close to home. Get the concept under control first.
In the custom POI file you already have (and I'll assume it is in .csv format), find a location or two close to your home. Copy and paste one or two locations from your custom POI file into a NEW file called TestTourGuide.csv.
Now, make a copy of any .wav file that you have on your computer. If you do not have one yet, then please read and follow the instruction in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/37633.
The name of this file will be TestTourGuide.wav.
Make a copy of any .bmp file you have and name the copy TestTourGuide.bmp.
Now make a new folder anywhere on your computer and call it TestTourGuide. Into this folder, MOVE the three files you created above.
The TestTourGuide folder will contain 3 and only 3 files.
TestTourGuide.csv
TestTourGuide.wav
TestTourGuide.bmp
Just to be doubly sure --- the nine (9) character string "TourGuide" must be typed EXACTLY like the characters within the quotes. There must be a capital "T" and a capital "G" and the other seven (7) characters must be in lower case.
For the file names, "TourGuide" could have been first or there could have been a space between "Test" and "TourGuide".
However, all three files must have EXACTLY the same names to the left of the extensions.
Run POI Loader and point it to the TestTourGuide folder.
In manual mode, set a proximity distance of a 5000 feet, say.
Safely disconnect the nuvi, and go for a ride - making sure that Proximity alerts are On. When you get within a mile of the locations you chose, you should hear the wav file play and get an oval with the name assigned to the location
Progress
I had Custom POIs working so that I got an alert any time I went right by a location. Now, I got the TourGuides working to a point. I don't know what I did wrong because I had just deleted everything and started over.
Now, I get an alert any time I am within 10 miles (for test purposes, I'll lower the distance once everything is working) of a location whether I am going to pass right by it or not. So, that is progress. Also, the locations or marked with the BMP I am using. However, when I get the alert, the screen does not split to show a large image of the BMP and the WAV file does not play. I know the WAV file is supposed to play and I assumed that the screen was supposed to split and show a large pic of the locations icon. Is that right?
Thanks to everyone for all your assistance.
No split screen on my Nuvi 50LM
When a TourGuide is activated. There is a pop-up label that reads "TourGuide: Name of Tourguide". And my wav file plays what ever sound I have chosen.

No Split Screen On My Nuvi 50LM
I read somewhere that you should get a split screen much like you do when you approach a highway interchange and it shows the configuration of the exit except that, instead of lanes, you'll see the icon for your location. I guess that doesn't work on this model. Which is fine. I do get the little gray box with the alert.
And, it turns out that the WAV file does play for me. What happened was, I had the Garmin on mute when I turned it on. Well, the POI was so close to my start point that the WAV alert played even before I had a chance to adjust the volume and bring up the map. I adjusted the alert distance to less than a mile and made sure the volume was up and the WAV played as it should.
I guess I'm good to go.
Thanks for the help.
Thank you
Thanks jgermann for explaining the TourGuide file preparation procedure. I have wondered about how to do this, but the other things I read were not this clear.

The TourGuide will only give you a popup of the poi. It never has given a split screen on any units. Also you definitely need a wav file in order for TourGuide to work. Just be careful with what you use TourGuide on. Using it on a McDonalds will haveing it go off all the time.
Glad you got it sorted out.

Yes. You only get split screens on Interstate exits (or such maybe).
And if you want a popup without sound, use the silence.wav file on this site.

40LM TourGuides...
Yes.. TourGuides work on the 40LM. After converting the mp3 files I use with the TourGuides for my 750 to wav files, all my old TourGuides worked perfectly on the 40LM.
Just my 2 cents.....
