Nuvi 3597 strange routing...

I recently bought Nuvi 3597. It does stange routing some times. For example, My house on Crescent and it is on the second end of the Crescent. Some days Nuvi will direct me to take the first end of the Crescent and go all the way round to my house instead of asking me to turn on the next one.

Secondly, many times when driving east bound on 407 highway from Hamilton to Brampton, it will prompt me to go to highway 401.

It never used to happen on my older units.

Do not have any definitive answer but a few questions.

You are obviously using the 3597 to "route" to your "Home". An interesting experiment might be to fire up EPE/Earth/Maps and find out the coordinates of the intersection of your driveway with Crescent. Enter these coordinates into "Saved" and call it Driveway (you might be able to do this by stopping just after turning into your driveway and using "my current location" to set a new Driveway).

Does anything different happen when you route to "Driveway" as opposed to "Home"?

when driving east bound on 407 does the "destination" make any difference (or are you always routing to the same destination)?

Trends?

If you have trends enabled, that can sometimes cause weird routings. My 2450 (with trends enabled) tends to avoid left hand turns.

I think the answer to this one is pretty easy. I think you have the Toll Road Avoidance turned on. It's been a few years since I lived in Toronto but 407 was built as a toll road and I suspect it still is. If so, with the Toll Road Avoidance checked on, the Nuvi will never route you on 407.

To check on this go to Settings - Navigation - Avoidances and make sure there is no check mark in the box beside Tolls and Fees. If there is, tab the check mark to get rid of it and tap save.

No, Toll Road Avoidance is turned off.

No, there is no traffic on small streets around my house. ANd while driving on 407, no traffic either.

It is very strange. Some days, it will announce to turn left on the third street on my left and some days askes me to turn on second street on left and then drive around the Crescent to reach my home.

I am always using "GO Home" option on Garmin. I selected home from the current location and not by adding address.

That's very strange.

But, the reason I was suggesting creating a "Driveway" location to route to your home is that your satellite fixes will vary from time to time such that the device does not always have your true location on the ground. Couple that with the possibility that your assumed home destination may be in a location that would cause the nuvi to do something different from time to time, was why I was suggesting eliminating an odd "Home" location.

In my own case, my "address" generates a location in my back yard. If it were slightly farther back in the yard, then the nuvi might route me on a dead-end circle where the last house backs up to mine as it would be slightly shorter.

Actually, I always select my driveway coordinates.
I did reset on my Garmin last night and removed dynamic routing. May be that is causing these issues.

Looks line dynamic routing

Looks like dynamic routing was the root cause. Once I disabled dynamic routing, it is back to normal.

I don't know what "dynamic routing" is. Could you explain and how to you disable it?

Home location

Bad idea, use a location maybe at the end of your street for home. Do not use your driveway. Bad things may happen if your GPS gets stolen.

If you can't find your way home from 500 feet away, you never will.

This is not a universally-accepted conclusion. In the CBC link, check through the Comments to see why.

I would think that if your GPS gets stolen that is already a bad thing. But more importantly, us thieves know to grab the owners card or insurance information out of the glove box if we intend to burgle your home after swiping your GPS. And we know how to turn on the track log and see all of the blue lines that converge on your home. We don't waste time looking for obscure favorites such as "driveway". If you're that concerned about having the GPS stolen, take it with you, don't leave it in the car to be stolen in the first place.

Sorry, my mistake. it is not called dynamic routing.
It is Optimized Route under traffic.
I changed it to "On request" from "Automatic". When it was set to Automatic, it was creating strange routes.

After removing Optimized Route, it fixed routing to my home but while driving East bound on 407 from Hamilton to Brampton, it always directs me to exit to 401 for some strange reason. There is no traffic or accident on 407 but it still directs me to go to 401. my other units 765, 1490 never do it. I had 2595 for few weeks, even that unit never did it either.

OK, I finally resolved the issue. There is a new route calculation "Less Fuel" on 3597. I changed route calculation from "faster route" to "Less Fuel". It re- routed me to correct route. Since 407 ETR is an Electronic Toll Route highway so it is lot less busy and your vehicle consumes less fuel. So looks like it needed "less Fuel" calculation.

That gets me wondering what happens to the ETA and distance when you make various selections. Would you please jot down some data the next time you take the route about the ETAs and distance to destination for faster, shorter and less fuel?

I keep trying in my mind to think about the routing algorithms and maybe ETAs and distance would help sort it out.
