Using simulation mode to test TourGuide

I have been using simulation feature to test TourGuides for at least three years. My method has been
: Set simulation mode.
:Select Where To> extras>TourGuide file>location.
:Set location.
:The alert displays with sound.
I now have a new pc with Windows7. I downloaded a new copy of EPE and sox. After successfully using the above method a few times, the visual alert will trigger, but no audio. I have cycled my 1450 off and on, but the audio does not sound every time. And that problem persists intermittently until I perform a hard reset.
I am wondering if the problem is unique to my 1450. I have not yet tried to update my 1490 using my new pc.

Debugging questions

@spokybob

Before you update your 1490 and 295 from the new computer, let us know what happens when you now do your simulations. Are they - as far as you can tell - working properly? I ask this because you may or may not have checked them using simulation after any activity associated with your previous PC configuration (including POI Loader)

I am not understanding why you mention new copies of EPE and sox (versus POI Loader and sox). As a side note, I keep a spare copy of sox.exe in a MyDwnLds/Garmin folder so that I can quickly update a new version of POI Loader once I determine where Garmin decides to install it. Keeping a spare working copy of sox.exe eliminates any concern that a freshly downloaded copy is corrupt.

In making sure I am following what is happening, let me rephrase the problem with the 1450.

After doing a run of POI Loader to add/update a TourGuide on the 1450, you did a simulation and did not hear audio; BUT you could do another simulation later and it might work (ie: "intermittent"). The intermittentancy does not include any additional runs of POI Loader.

The fact that the audio is intermittent (and no intervening runs of POI Loader occurred) would seem to eliminate sox.exe as part of the problem.

Finally, if you do a master reset, the audio returns to working and continues to work through multiple simulations.

Location of Sox

My first guess is that the Sox program isn't where it should be.

On my computer it is in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader

It goes where POI Loader is installed.

I also wouldn't be using the latest and greatest version of Sox; stick with the 14.0.1 version.

I am working on IL Cemeteries.csv : no problem ever using this file as compiled with poi loader on my XP machine.

I do not know how to install an application from one pc to another. That is why I downloaded & installed fresh copies as noted in FAQ on this website. I have downloaded all the POI-Factory custom files to my Win7 pc.

Not exactly. I did a few "set locations" with no problem. Then later in the same session, the audio did not sound. Then I set the location a mile away and performed a simulated "run by" past the location. No audio. But passing the next cemetery, the alert with audio was OK.

Correct. I downloaded the RLC & Speed. I have custom wav for those files. The simulated run bys worked.
I have to go to the doctor in Moline this afternoon. I will drive past two problem locations, testing if I receive the alerts.

Over the years, having experienced hard drive failures and computers getting malware because my grandsons let malware creep on their PC here at my house (mine was hands off), I determined that it was advisable for me to keep the install packages for any software on my hard drive in a folder called MyDwnLds. I had one sub-folder for those packages that were "installed" and another for those that had been "uninstalled" because I did not like them or because I found a better replacement. Since I do periodic "image" backups to an external USB drive (and also to Carbonite), I know at any time what software I must reinstall if the hard drive fails or has to be reformatted to get rid of malware. (Note that I have been successful with taking an install cd/dvd and creating an ISO image to be placed in MyDwnLds so I do not have to search for disks. All I need is an accompanying text file with the "key").

Just checking, you were having problems with TourGuides as opposed to "along the route" alerts. Is that right?

Or have you experienced problems with both types?
