Windshield mount falling off

I have a Nuvi 1680, and the mount suction cup is falling off the windshield every 2 days or so.

Garmin sent me another one when I complained about this, I installed it and a couple months later it's doing the same as the old one.

I contrast this to my Magellan suction cup which was stuck on the windshield for years without falling off. It was about half inch bigger. Not sure if that's the reason.

Yeah, I have cleaned it, I have tried everything.

This is just ridiculous.

Screw it to the windshield

Me? I had the same problem so I put the suction cup on the windshield and then I drilled a small hole through the suction cup and windshield. Installed a small screw with a nut on the end and guess what? Problem solved. redface Just kidding. I guess I couldn't resist inserting a little levity into the situation. Seriously though. I have always had a problem with the suction cups from Garmin. After my GPS went flying across the dashboard and onto the floor for the third time, I went for the bean-bag mount although I know that this is not the solution for every situation.

Not that I'm nitpicking, but..."Leaving the mount on the windshield is one of the signs that you "MIGHT" have a GPS in the car...".

Thought the word "MIGHT" would be a more accurate statement, seeing the sight of a GPS mount doesn't always mean that a GPS unit is also in the vehicle too.

With the price of standalone GPS units hitting bottom, I am not going to start carefully removing the GPS from the car.

And guess what? My side window was smashed, GPS grabbed, stolen. I replaced the side window and the GPS and the old GPS was eventually recovered and returned to me by the police department.

But I do not plan on changing a thing, I do not plan on removing the GPS or even hiding it. None of that is gonna change.

I still think Garmin caused the problem with the windshield mounts and I still think they should be the ones to solve the problem they caused.

Suction cup type mounts do

Suction cup type mounts do wear out. I have pretty good luck getting in to stick if I cup the mount working it with my hands which works if it is coming off because it is getting flat. Otherwise get a different type of mount, the vent mount is nice and is slightly more incognito.

I just got a replacement out of Garmin

I just got a replacement out of Garmin for my failing windshield mount.

It has not fallen off since then.

I just have to say they could do a tiny bit of materials engineering when they have those made (taiwan, incidentally, not china) and this just would not happen anymore.

I can't believe they haven't made that change. The fact that a brand new one stays on the windshield for months, in the sun, and finally fails is a red flag if you ask me. If they were no good replacement would have had no effect. But it works for a while.

I think anyone who experiences this problem with Garmin products should ask for a free replacement like I always do, and they would have to once and for all fix the dumb problem.

here's what I've discovered / found

I too have experienced the suction mount for the gps to be less than optimum so I did a little experimentation.

I tried:

water, it's the universal solvent and likely to be the least reactive or destructive. While the water seemed to work, in sub zero weather, the mount fell off because the water between the suction mount and the glass would freeze. In warmer weather the mount would stay stuck to the glass until the water seal evaporated, then the mount would once again fall off.

Spit, it's readily available.. DUH! It tends not be quite as bad as water in sub zero weather, and about the same as water in warmer weather.

Liquid Detergent, a drop or two goes a long way. In sub zero weather it doesn't freeze so the moisture seal isn't destroyed and in the warm weather the moisture doesn't evaporate. However, use it on a dirty windshield and its unpredictable and use too much (more than a drop or two) and it tends to slide around a bit and reposition itself.

Vegetable oil, similar results to liquid detergent but once affixed to the windshield it seems to stay put until you choose to remove it.

In all cases, be sure to start with a very clean windshield (no the outside doesn't count) and an equally clean rubber suction cup on the mount.

These are my experiences and YMMV. When I remove my mount for any number of various reasons, I always thoroughly clean the windshield, followed by an alcohol wipe over the area where I'll be putting the mount back up then I use the vegetable oil and up it goes and it stays up for months at a time.

As always, YMMV.. best of luck to everyone.

I've found the liquid detergent works the best for my use. When you first mount it with the detergent, yes, it DOES slide around but this can be a good thing since it lets you reposition (up to a point) the mount and fine-tune where it needs to go exactly. Then when the detergent dries for a bit (1 or 2 hours or so), it locks into position and doesn't move. I redo this detergent seal every 6 months or so and it works well enough, even in the hot SoCal summers.

I do wish Garmin would move to a different cup design (clear silicone) to alleviate these unpredictable release issues.

Same here....

I've had this issue for years, (Florida sunshine is murder on any kind of windshield-mounted device - even glue-mounted rear view mirrors fall off with alarming regularity!) . I finally went to the Garmin air vent mount about six months ago and I'm very happy with it.

Most air vent mounts are just pure garbage ...but Garmin's actually works quite well in my cars (some better than others -it depends on the design of the vents). For about twelve bucks, its worth a try....

Heat

I've never found a suction cup mount for anything that would stay on the windshield very long here in Florida - they just don't seem to like the heat. I've always had to resort to mounting one of the disks somewhere on or below the dash to attach the suction cup to.

My windshield mount never held so I eventually switched to a bean bag holder.

Depending on how you like

Depending on how you like your GPS mounted to the windshield, another option is to use a "sticky dash mount" with 3M adhesive.

I use it for my dashcam. Not as flexible as a suction cup but firmly attached!

I have one of those for my phone mount. Almost requires pliers to remove it from the dash. But a little soap and water and it's just as sticky as ever.

Friction Mount

I have the New Garmin Friction Mount on my dash it has been there for almost a year and has never moved!
and way nicer looking than the bean bag!

Nuvi 710

I have experienced the same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 710 on the suction problem. Now for my big two other problems, my time on my Nuvi is one hour in advance, but I have the correct time zone, how do I get my time on the GPS correct? My biggest problem is, how do I set my Garmin Nuvi 710 on host or Garmin so that my PC can see the GPS, I am attempting to load routs from Google Earth onto my Garmin, but my PC does not see the GPS and indicates to me that I should have the GPS set to that settings, but there is nobody that can advise me how to do it without resetting the GPS to manufactory settings and lose all my save data and POI`s. If anybody can help, please.

.

I bought my 3790 in 2011, and have noticed over the last year the mount is falling off the windshield a bit more often.

The last time it did, I noticed the suction cup was getting a bit hard from the hot sun here. I sprayed the cup with an armour-all type solution, and let it sit for 15 minutes, and wiped it off.

It stays on solidly, now.
