Windshield mount falling off

I have a Nuvi 1680, and the mount suction cup is falling off the windshield every 2 days or so.

Garmin sent me another one when I complained about this, I installed it and a couple months later it's doing the same as the old one.

I contrast this to my Magellan suction cup which was stuck on the windshield for years without falling off. It was about half inch bigger. Not sure if that's the reason.

Yeah, I have cleaned it, I have tried everything.

This is just ridiculous.

Bean Bag!

Try putting some water

You can put some water on the both windshill and suction cup. That should help!!!

Bean Bag

for sure.

Windshield Wiper Fluid Works Well

Personally I don't like to use saliva. I found that over time the bacteria and acid in saliva was eating away at the plastic disc that came with my Garmin that sticks to the dashboard. No telling what it would do to the suction cup it self over time. Now I stick it to the windshield and it doesn't fall down as often as it did with the disc.

Instead of saliva I set the suction cup side on the windshield fluid sprayer and push the button to spray some fluid on the suction cup. I found that worked a lot better than saliva and stays on the windshield much longer.

Much Longer?

Much longer is not a solution in my opinion, it still poses a threat to fall and damage the Nuvi.

I've always used a bean bag in all my vehicles and never had one fall. I also wrapped the power chord one turn around the ball joint arm to elininate the stress on the power cable as not to damage the power cable or USB connector. It also permits me to move the bean bag and Nuvi to another vehicle with ease.

I realize that those using bean bag experience an overwhelming desire to get others to make the same choice. But this is a discussion of why some suction cups seem to fail to stick to the glass windshield, not a request for alternatives.

The danger of falling and damage can be solved in a very simple way (I learned it on this site, don't remember who first posted it): Wrap the power cord a couple of times around the rear view mirror post, then mount the GPS high next to the mirror. If the mount releases it will only drop inches and then be caught safely by the cord. And this also places the GPS high where it will not block the road view, and close to the driver for easy viewing and easy reach (considering the slope of most windshields).

But most importantly, the bean bag mounts don't stick to the windshield well at all. No matter how much you spit on them.

Sorry but I don't like the cord around the mirror.

I don't like the need to look up at the GPS that is near the mirror. I prefer it in the lower left corner where I just need to move my eyes to the left and not tilt my entire head.

So I resolved my suction cup issue by using velcro on the windshield and the cup and a little piece of foam to help support it. Issue resolved!

... although I keep mine dead center on the dash in a manner where most of it only blocks the view of a portion of the hood of the vehicle. I put velcro on the dash and on the underside of the plastic disk and the disk always stays on the suction cup. Haven't had it come undone yet.

WindShield Mount falling off

I had the same thing happen to me worse when it happens while driving . Alcohol cleans helps a bit but not much and tends to leave streaks and marks on windshield too

Did I mention...

My OEM Garmin suction cup has been installed since July 2, which is the date I had my car inspected...and when I did my bi-annual windshield cleaning. Did I mention it has not fallen off? Did I mention that my GPS stays suction-cupped on my windshield 24/7? Did I mention that where I live has had numerous 100+ degree days with brilliant sunshine that will burn your cheeks when you get into a 165 degree car that has been sitting in the hot sun all day? Did I mention that I do not expect my OEM Garmin suction cup to fall off my windshield over the next 3+ months...and that I will be physically removing the suction cup in January, 2014 so I can do my bi-annual windshield cleaning? Why does my Garmin OEM suction cup stay on without falling off for 6+ months at a time...and yours does not?

I like the idea of a tether to "catch" the GPS if the suction cup lets loose. But I would be concerned about using the power cord as the tether. It seems like it could damage the cord, connector or port on the device or cradle. And on the USB connected devices, the weight of the GPS bouncing might just yank the cord out and allow the GPS to fall.

An alternative would be to tie a shoestring or some other cord around the neck of the suction cup and put a hook on the other end that could be hooked over the mirror, a dashboard knob, visor arm or anything else that is available depending on the position of the mount.

Clip Mount

Try a clip mount. They fit into a vent on your vehicle. Works great. Available from Amazon.

GPS Mount

I drive in NY for a living. And I discovered very quickly about 7 years ago that the SAFEST mount for your GPS is made by ProClip USA.
It's customized for your vehicle and particular model GPS. It brings it down to air vent level. Making it safe, because there will me no obstructed view which definitely occurs installed on the windshield .
Also, in some states it's illegal to have it on the windshield. Once installed, you'll be viewing it almost at eye level. It's not cheap, but it's worth the money .

You could try super gluing the beanbag to the windshield but I don't know how that would work, either.

I have a bean bag mount but really can't use it with my current car because of the shape of the dash. I have gone back to the suction cup mount for now and just assume I will find it on the floor every once in a while.

My beanbag mount that sits

My beanbag mount that sits on my dash cover keeps sliding slowly towards the windshield and finally starts tapping it and I have to move it closer. Anyone have a better solution?

;

Never had luck with the suction mounts, always went back to the beanbag.

My truck dash slopes toward the windshield. WM sells foam mesh shelf liner. Even under hard braking, it did not move.

I see now they're putting dainty foam mesh shelf liner under their beanbags. Maybe they chose a nice pastel soft pink to match the color of their panties...

think off the whindshield

I found using the circle that attaches to dashboard works much better than the windshield. occasionally it would come off with my old GPS but with my new suction cup it holds fine

I've gotten into the habit

I've gotten into the habit of checking my suction cup whenever I'm about to go out, and I can easily tell when the cup is about to let go. I simply stick it back on at the same place and it's good to go for another couple of months. It likely would last far longer if I set it just below the rear-view mirror where it's not as likely to be baked by the sun, but where I have it set the GPS sits just above the dash, centered on the steering wheel. The added heat from this location likely plays a huge part in the loss of suction, because I have no problems with the mount in the winter.

Same here. Every 2 weeks or so, I lift the release lever, then pull on the cup release tab so the cup releases just enough to lose it's seal, then re-seal the cup back in the same position. In SoCal summers, I may do this more often as heat seems to be the main factor in premature release.

You'd think they'd know there is a problem, clearly they send out a lot of mounts as free replacements.

Falling off again.

The new mount that I got from Garmin at no charge in September is falling off the windshield again. Less than three months.

That is just ridiculous. You'd think they would find it in their best interest to fix the problem.

fixable

Steevo wrote:

I take it from this post that it did work fine for several months. Would you be willing to punch out the pin and look at the rubber and see if it is ripping away from where it is attached? This may help understand the source of the problem, and leads to a simple but very effective fix. Knock out the pin that the latch lever pivots on with either a pin punch or a flattened nail and the mount will come apart cleanly, and can be repaired and reassembled easily.

Bean Bag

I've been using the Bean Bag for years... recently, it started sliding off the dash. No idea what changed. I'm using the suction cup at the moment.

My Garmin windshield mount has not fallen off in over two years

My Garmin windshield mount has not fallen off in over two years, maybe three years. I take the mount off once every six months to clean the windows on the inside and then re-install it...where it says put for another six months.

It's been on the windshield (WITHOUT FALLING OFF) since early July (when I got my car inspected and new registration and inspection stickers). I'll be removing the mount in a few weeks to do my twice-a-year windshield cleaning.

Poaaible Causes

Have you recently applied a conditioner to the dash like Armoral, this would cretae a slick condition so the bean bag may slide?.

Have you inspected the bottom of the bean bag for wear which may happen in time if not properly stored?.

Leaving it always on the dash in warm climates may deteriorate the rubberized bottom material.
I'm a bit anal in that regard, I always bring the bean bag and GPS indoors when not in use.

I'm too frugal to buy a new bean bag so I went to the store and bought one of the thin mouse pads and glued it to the bottom of my bean bag with the worn out base. Fully reconditioned for less than $6.

New Bean Bag

I used a three ear bean bag for a while that was never very solid. It used to slide around on the dash and fell off and landed on the floor. And that in heavy traffic on an interstate. Finally I bought the four ear bean bag from Garmin. That one is solid as a rock. It sits in the lower left corner in front of the wind shield. It never moves or fell off. I love it.

Make sure there is no debris, dust, sand or other particulates.

Then I use forehead oil. Just rub the suction cup around on your forehead. Works great.

Bean Bag

A coupel of people have suggested the Bean Bag mount.

I have to agree wiht that. I have had great success with the beanbag AND it's easy to move and hide so thieves don't spot the fact that you have a GPS.

I always just move mine from the dash to the console so it's out of site.

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Mount

I have tried a mount made by Garmin that look slike a bg tongue with some kind of sticky rubber coating on the bottom of it.

It is also bedable to form it to the shape of the dahs.

The problem I had with it was it had a small base and woul dtip over easier than I cared for.

It was small enough that it packed away easily in my little Garmin travel bag.

But it still does not beat the beanbag.

Location and clean

good flat area and clean the glass and kep the suction part clean, ours work. And yes the will bleed out over time, so redoing the set after a few days helps. But you shouldn't leave it showing as someone will break your windows to look for your GPS

Windshield Mount Falling Off

All this talk on the mount falling off on an old thread; saliva, glycerin, rubber bands, theft....

I do not recommend leaving the mount or the GPS on the windshield or dash when parked for any length of time. Ultraviolet from the sun is what cracks plastic dashboards, it can do the same to your GPS and mount. In addition the life of rechargeable battery is shortened if you leave the unit to heat in the sun every day.

Take good care of your gear and it will take care of you in return.

Like some others have said

Cleaning the windshield and suction cup with alcohol extends the suction-ness of the holder.

But eventually it will fall again. At least it does on mine.
