formatted

Hello, if you're reading this and know how please help...this is an emergency.

I was trying to format a 2gb micro sd card and instead formatted the internal memory of the gps Nuvi 1350. Now it starts and freezes on "Garmin."

Please help me if you can. I'm not worried about the map for now, I just need it to start. Please help.

Thanks in advance!

Help

I am pretty sure you will have to get in touch with Garmin and if your GPS is registered to you they may be able to help.

Also I think this may be possible? If you have webupdater then log onto it with your GPS connected to the computer to see if that may restore your GPS.

As an aside, it is always a good idea to make a full back-up of your GPS before new maps etc, that way you can restore your GPS in no time.

Maybe others have better advice.

Preboot and cure.

There is a way to recover your nuvi IF you have a backup of the files and a copy of a firmware update file (gupdate.gcd) for your model of nuvi. Here is a thread from another forum member who went through this and was eventually able to recover his nuvi: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/38905

Thanks a lot for your response.

I've learnt the hard way. As soon as this is sorted out, the first thing I will do is backup, backup and backup.

I've tried using the Garmin webupdater and it says it can't find a device.

If I don't have to deal with Garmin, as I'm sure that will cost money, that will be much better. And also it's not registered to be. When I bought it second-hand, I never bothered with registering it to me as I did not see the need.

Thanks a lot, alanb.

I don't have a backup, which would have been nice. I've learnt my lesson.

If you know where I can find the original files, please help.

I've checked out the link you sent, which asks that two softwares are used, one of which is there and the link provided to Garmin's website does not list my gps, which is: Nuvi 1350. Since that file is needed, I can't proceed with that solution.

Please let me know if you have it, you can PM me. Or know where I can find it.

Thanks a lot!

I've not tried this, but...

If you need the gcd or other files for your nuvi 1350, they may be here (listed as nuvi 13xx files):

http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/nuvi

Good luck. You have quite the challenge ahead of you.

Good find CraigW, I looked through it, but I think both my GPS's are up-to date since evey once in a while I log onto webupdater to see if there are any new files.

Files.

Since you don't have a backup, what you will need to do is find someone who has your same model of nuvi and will be willing to give you a copy of the files other than the map (which will only work on the nuvi that it is locked to. And it would be illegal to give you the map anyway.)

What I would do if I were you is to see if you can get past the first stage of the preboot and cure. That step will get your nuvi reattached to your computer as a storage device. Then see if you can use a format recovery tool to restore the files. If that doesn't work, then try to find someone with a nuvi 1350 that is willing to share.

If you can get your nuvi restored to the point where it will boot, call Garmin and see if they will do something for you on the missing map. If not, you may end up having to buy a City Navigator map, or use the free Open Street Maps.

But the first step is to see if you can get the preboot/cure to attach your nuvi to the computer as a storage device.

This is a very good start.

I now have the file, but don't know how to proceed as the computer does not see the gps anymore. Please if you can help further, please do.

If anyone is here and reading this, please if you have the Garmin Nuvi 1350, please, please, please, please, please, please help me, please help me. I don't need your map, just the other files. Please help. And maybe alandb can list the files you can easily copy and send. Please PM me if you have these files. Please, please, help.

I'm hunting now, trying to find a way to get past the preboot and cure. If anyone knows how to do this real quick, please let me know, please. I will buy a new map, I just need to get this up and running. Please anyone with ideas on the preboot and cure. This is the first important step and then the preboot and cure.

Thanks also to all those who've pitched in.

Files can also be found at:

http://gawisp.com/perry/nuvi/

but as alandb states, your first goal is to go through the preboot procedure since nothing is going to help you much if a computer doesn't see the nuvi as a drive.

One further question as I don't think you've mentioned this yet. What type of format did you do to your 1350? I think you need FAT32 and not NTSF and not FAT. Let us know and folks with the answer will let you know if you did the proper format to get started.

If you do get everything loaded except the map, you may have the ability to reinstall the City Navigator that was lost without having to buy it. Then again, maybe not since you mention that the nuvi was never registered and we don't know what map version you had previously.

On the other hand, if you need to buy City Navigator, then potentially buy the City Navigator numaps lifetime update, you may find that it's cheaper to buy a new nuvi with lifetime maps and traffic, one with many more features than your 1350, for less than the cost of a map purchase. If you do need to buy City Navigator North America NT, be sure NOT to buy the numaps Lifetime map update. You need to first buy the more expensive CNNANT map before any update can be applied. Note that there are also non-Garmin maps (OpenStreetMap) that you could use instead of a Garmin map.

CNNANT has a MSRP of $80 and beyond that, lifetime updates have a MSRP of $90. The lifetime updates can be found easily at almost half the MSRP but the first purchase of the map will be at a higher % of the MSRP.

Files, etc

And this is the real challenge that I need help for now; getting it to go past preboot. I'm still searching online, no help so far.

It was formatted on a mac laptop and I chose the FAT32 option.

If you do get everything loaded except the map, you may have the ability to reinstall the City Navigator that was lost without having to buy it. Then again, maybe not since you mention that the nuvi was never registered and we don't know what map version you had previously.

I think it was registered, but not by me. I bought it used. I don't know what map was in there, but it had been telling me recently that the map is more than a year old.

Please tell me what other nuvi do you think will be good to buy, one with more features. Thanks for your input on the different kinds of maps, etc. This is all very, very new to me.

CNNANT has a MSRP of $80 and beyond that, lifetime updates have a MSRP of $90. The lifetime updates can be found easily at almost half the MSRP but the first purchase of the map will be at a higher % of the MSRP.

Thanks a lot for all your help here. Very much appreciated. I think the main problem now is getting past pre-boot. Anyone out there with ideas, please?

preboot and cure.

I have never done this procedure myself and hope I never have to. But the cure software may require a Windows computer. I am not sure about this, so hopefully someone here can shed some light on whether you can do the preboot/cure process using a Mac.

That said, the GPS Psssion forum is much more into this type of thing than POI Factory. You may want to switch over to that forum to get help from the people who developed the preboot and cure procedures. Note that GPS Passion does not get a lot of traffic, so you may need to wait a day or two to get a reply when you post there. Be patient and someone over there will offer some help.

Yeah, the site does seem to be in decline, but still probably the best place to go for what we are discussing in this thread.

Preboot And Cure

Thanks a lot. I will pursue that Forum and report here. But this accident led me to this forum, which I'm happy to discover. I had no idea a Forum such as this existed. I'm not completely sure what is best suited here, that means I haven't had time to look around. So if someone has a minute, tell me about this Forum, what I can benefit, get and how I can contribute. Thanks to all those who tried helping! I will be checking here later to see if any new ideas on resolving this issue come forward. Thanks a lot!
