I wrongly formatted my garmin nuvi 465t and now my device is dead

First I wanted to format my garmin nuvi 465t but I saved all files to my computer, I wanted a full clean new updated system...
well here is what I did:

I formatted with gparted to Fat32 everything when OK
I turn off my device abd turn it back up and it display garmin logo then reboot and it goes on a loop and wont connect to my computer...

Now after many hr without result I come to you guys very humble to see if you guys can give me some tips on how to bring my device back to life...

thanks

Just load your backup

Welcome to the forum.

Just copy your full backup to your device and you should be good to go..

That should make it work

That should make it work again and the unit will be exactly the same as it was before he started.

I just cannot understand what would be gained by doing the format in the first place.

It appears he can't copy his backup since his PC doesn't recognize the Nuvi.

@golpemortal
Did you format to NTFS or Fat32, if NTFS it won't be recognized by your PC.

Reading all the posts.
We know, you think you formatted it fat32 and all went well. If you see the Garmin logo when you boot, it didn't format. It's looping. So how to do a hard reset on these units?

reset the unit back to the same as it was when first turned on

well here is what I did:

If you look through your owners manual there was a way to reset the unit back to the same as it was when first turned on. The only thing that will not be changed back is the firmware that runs the unit.

Try turning the unit completely off then plug into the computer when in the turned off state.

FAQ on Hard Reset

Pre-boot and cure.

I think the mistake you made was shutting the unit down after the format. If you had left it connected and recopied the backup files to it while it was still connected, you would have been OK. But in any case, if the other ideas presented above don't work, you may want to research pre-boot mode and "cure" software over on the gpspassion site. Here is a place to start: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=143809.

Good luck.

I have never heard of "gparted", but have always used MS for formatting anything. I have used Low level format programs as well. But never formatted my GPS! Also what some people think is a complete back-up, may not be if the hidden and Garmin system files are not copied. Just my 0.02

This is a valid point on the newer units with the .system folder. But the 465T does not have a hidden .system folder, so his backup should be complete.

The pre-boot and "cure" method I mentioned in my post is intended to get around this problem. I have never had to use it myself, but have read about many in your situation that have.

You never answered the question if you formatted in Fat32 or NTFS.

Pesonally I thing alandb's link is your best bet, you need to read thoroughly since it can be a bit confusing. You may also want to do a google search for "rgn cure".

I need stronger glasses, he did say Fat32.

I did read your post prior but I'm not absolutely sure that is correct. You indicated you thought he actually did not format since the Garmin Logo appears.

Is it possible that the Logo is part of the RAM that is not affected by a format and will always remain?

I've formatted my 3790 before, only because i wanted to see if when Garmin updates files if they grow. Some did, some didn't, not a lot unless it compounds every time. Hmm..unless you know what your doing why would you format your unit? Ok back to your ?. I never checked it when I formatted it. I would say no to writing to Ram. One doesn't do things like that...lol
Possible...yes. Nope, I'm sticking with my answer.

That's Good News

Now that Windows recogized the Nuvi I think you will be back in business. Hopefully your backup contains all the hidden files of the Nuvi which should have been done before the backup.

Please let us know the results.

So..now what?
The back-up you have was not complete, as you stated.
Any chance that you updated the last Map? If you could go to Garmin it might let you update it again. I did something a while back where i deleted a bunch of files. There wasn't much left on it. I kept the gmapprom.unl file and the xml files for sure but it was almost empty. The updater restored my whole unit.
That's all I have to add....sorry

Cure?

After you flashed the cure software and restored your backup files, did you reflash the original software .rgn file?

Well, like I stated earlier, I have never personally used the cure software (fortunately have never had to). But as I understand the process, the cure program converts a .gcd file (normally downloaded by Garmin's Web Updater to update your nuvi) into a .rgn firmware file which is flashed to your nuvi using the updater.exe program. The cure program can either create "cure" firmware version or "original" firmware version from the .gcd file. You flash it once for the cure version which allows you to access the nuvi in storage mode to restore your files. Then you flash original firmware back to the restored nuvi to make it boot up and operate normally.

My understanding may not be technically correct, so you may actually get better help on this over on the gpspassion forum.

Getting an unlocked image from a friend:

A. Won't work as the image is tied to his device.
B. Violates Garmin's terms of service.
C. Is not discussed here at all.

Considering that a format is not necessary to update map files, and the device XML is unique to the unit, you should probably contact Garmin Support for help in restoring your unit.

Why?

redlinenissan wrote:

I've been doing map updates since 2008. Why on earth would you format the device? The Garmin Map Updater software handles everything needed to do an update. When the maps got too big for my 765T, I added a 4GB SD card and the updater installs the maps there now.

As the post above notes, contact Garmin.
