Garmin goes Android

Garmin's latest trail GPS uses the Android OS and supports downloading 3rd party apps from the Android store.

At 2.9" X 5.9" by 1.4", that is one BIG handheld device to carry on the trails!

It's an intriguing move, and we can only hope to see something like that in the mobile camp eventualy.

Android on GPS devices certainly has potential...if they do it right!

Possibly one less device to

Possibly one less device to haul around. As long as it doesn't use (phone) data and uses it's own antenna to see the sats, I am in...

rather have my own phone

rather have my own phone with Garmin on it, as it is already on me.

StreetPilot For Android Is Coming Along Quite Well...

Garmin Goes Android(Garmin StreetPilot Onboard For Android)

Does anybody here have any theories on why they haven't offered it here in the United States yet? It just seems odd that they have it for the Apple iOS, they have it on an Android device in another country, but not in the US. Could the non-compete clause with ASUS actually have been for a longer term than originally thought?

Differences in infrastructure between markets?

It is possible that they are releasing for some markets and will follow up later in the U.S. market because there are differences between the markets that need to be addressed before release. TomTom has some recent GPS models that have been released in Europe but not in the U.S. yet, supposedly due to differences in the cell phone networks.

I have no way to know if that is the case here, but it is what I would assume in the absence of other information.

With best wishes,

Garmin has an Adroid phone app

It's called Navigon... and on iOS, in my opinion, Navigon is better than Garmin's StreetPilot anyway...
