Right Angle Mini USB Cable

I am looking for a right angle mini USB cable to power my Garmin Nuvi 360. Are they all pretty much created equally or are the pin-outs different on any of them? I will use this to plug into a Scosche 12 volt to USB power plug in the vehicle.

Standard USB cables like the

Standard USB cables like the one you're looking at are missing a resistor that is found in Garmin power cords. The resistor is required for the GPS to function on AC or DC power as it shunts the power from pin 4 to pin 5. Using a standard USB cable results in the GPS entering mass storage mode and thus cannot be used for navigation.

In short, the cable won't work.

Agreed. You'd have to modify the cable to put the GPS into navigation mode. It *is* possible but it's not very easy since you're soldering micro-sized components. I've done it before but it's not an easy task. See the following:

I knew there was at least one site that described the pinout. Thanks for the added info. smile

Fixing to

I was just fixing to buy a USB to Micro cable and a lighter usb plug for my husband's truck as we never use it much but the other day I needed Jill in the truck and didn't won't to unroute my cables.

So I need to get the correct cable and another stand, as my 2450 cable plugs into the stand??

Don't think I need it that badly smile

Right Angle Mini USB Cable

My current mini USB cable is working BUT it connects to the Garmin Nuvi 360 powered mount cradle. I have tried this with my wife's Garmin Nuvi 500 and, exactly as has been mentioned, it goes into the mass storage mode. So, since the difference seems to be the powered mounting cradle, I assume that a simple right angle mini USB cable should work since the current one works.

GPS Power

Make sure that the power source is +5VDC, not +12VDC. If you apply +12VDC through the USB plug, the GPS will be fried. Car chargers convert +12VDC to +5VDC.

We get a lot of emails from people who have wired their GPS directly to the battery and wonder why the GPS no longer works.

You can use a standard USB cable to power a Garmin GPS, do the following:

1. Plug in the USB cable and wait until the GPS has booted up in data mode.

2. Unplug the USB cable and wait until it is booting up in navigation mode and loading maps.

3. Plug the USB cable back into the GPS. It will continue to boot up in navigation mode.

The drawback to this is that you will have to go through these steps each time you power the unit up. However if you use this procedure, it will operate on external power as well as charge the internal battery.

Good Tip

That's a good tip for those that aren't afraid of being experimental. It would be a hard lesson learned if someone fried their GPS.

Right Angle Mini USB Cable

Thank you very much for the tips. Just to bring everyone up to date, I am using a Wagan 2438 Twin USB/DC Sockets Travel Adapter http://www.wagan.com/index.php/products/mobile-electronics/d... http://www.amazon.com/Wagan-Twin-Socket-Travelers-Adapter/dp... I have ordered a Startech USB2HABM6RA 6 ft Mini USB Cable A to Right Angle Mini B cable http://www.startech.com/Cables/USB-2.0/Mini/6foot-Mini-USB-C... http://www.walmart.com/ip/StarTech-Mini-USB-Cable-A-to-Right... The original setup on the dash looked like this http://forums.radioreference.com/radio-equipment-installatio... I wanted to get both the Garmin Nuvi and the speaker off of the dash, but I wasn't sure how I was going to do it at first. I recently went with a Panavise Vehicle Specific Mount. I started with the Nuvi there, but then decided to move the speaker to the VSM and I bought an OEM Garmin Air Vent Mount. The air vent mount puts the Nuvi at a better viewing angle and I now have room on the dash again!

One Foot Mini USB Power Cable

I am back in the market again. This time I am looking, specifically, for a one foot mini USB power cable. It does not have to have a right angle. I would prefer that it works as a power cable only. I have a three foot data cable that works, but it does not need to be that long. I have neem perusing Amazon and Ebay, but I haven't found a a power only mini USB cable that is one foot long. Sure, lots of one foot data cables, but not power only cables.

Monoprice

When I am looking for cables I go to one of two places, Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cables.

Monoprice has a 1.5 ft cable.
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=5447

A quick glance at Blue Jeans Cables doesn't show any USB cables.

Hope this helps.

Can you add a data blocker?

Jim1348 wrote:

What about adding a data blocker to a charge/sync cable? They are available as straight or right angle. A USB Extension Cable with Data/Charge Sync Switch is also available; see https://www.adafruit.com/product/3438#technical-details but note it is only about 9-1/2 inches long.

Also, if this connection is semi-permanent, i. e. not connecting/ disconnecting frequently, you might try making your own. See https://www.instructables.com/USB-Condom/ for how to do this with tape or https://www.cultofmac.com/632796/how-and-why-to-make-your-ow... for a more permanent version by removing the two center data connections.

My 2450 came with a 1 foot cable

See if you can find a bad 2450 for cheap with it's cable. My 2450 Garmin came with a 1 ft cable. I use it for a lot of things.

EDIT: I just measured it 18" little longer than a foot.

still

remember when someone asked me in the office, do you have a USB C charger?

I said what's that?

The new work laptop has 2 USB C. What I learned this month is the mfg (Dell) says if you use a dock, plug it in the one closer to you. If you use an external power supply, plug it in the one further from you. And they are labeled as such. At home I'm using my own hub and the factory power supply, so that's how I'm doing it, and using both USB C ports.

My Garmin is still working 12 years later. At this point I don't even remember the model maybe 2450LMT? Not bad as the first one (660) only lasted 3 years. So if I break the cable (it's been crushed) maybe it's done with?

Economy Cable

I see a lot of old Garmins in the thrift stores. You can usually get an older Garmin with a Garmin branded USB car cable for $5-10. You can redonate or throw the old Garmin and have a genuine cable, or find just the cable sometimes for even less. You can tell its a good cable if it has Garmin printed on the 12 volt connector.

Right Angle Mini USB Cable

Thank you so much to everybody who replied. I do appreciate it.

The reason I am looking for this is to power my Garmin Zumo XT while I use it on e-bike rides. Oh, sure, I could buy a dedicated bicycle GPS, but since using my Garmin Zumo XT on my Gazelle e-bike not long after buying it last year, I am finding that I really like having it on there.

Obviously the internal battery will power it for a while, but some of my e-bike rides are long enough that I run out of internal battery power on the Garmin Zumo XT.

I have a Kemimoto Bike Cup Holder that holds a power bank. The Zumo is mounted close enough to it that I only need a 1 foot cord. What I am trying to determine is how much longer I can run my Garmin Zumo XT buy using a 10000 Anker PowerCore III 10K power bank.

Maybe 5X

Several sources say the Zumo XT replacement battery is around 1800 to 2000 mAh. So in theory with a 10k mAh power bank you should get roughly 5X of the nominal battery life of a new XT.

E-bike Battery

If you can tap your e-bike battery, you can use one of these to provide a steady reliable 12V power source:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09HTXNZDY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b...

I use one to power both my Montana 650T and Montana 700i on my e-bike.

Power Bank Power

I have been reading up a bit on power banks, primarily Anker brand. It looks like their power banks with USB 3 ports and connectors that are blue in color are are higher powered. Does anybody know if the industry has agreed upon standards for other colors of USB ports? Or, for that matter, how much power does a blue USB port typically offer? Some places list bout 1.5 amps.

color does not imply power

The color codes on USB ports are for other purposes, not power delivery capability.

You can count on the base USB spec of a minimum of 0.5 Ampere delivered on the 5V line, but above that you need to consult the spec for the particular device. These days plenty of them are good well above 1 Ampere, some quite a way above.

Of course, for real speed of power delivery you want a pair of devices which both comply with the same protocol under which they shake hands using the data lines and agree to power delivery at both a higher voltage and a decent amperage. I've got an inline USB power meter, and think I remember my Samsung tablet accepting power from a compliant wall-wart at something like 9V and 3A.

If they don't speak the same protocol, those just stay at the classic 5V.

In the extreme case, potentially USB-C devices can agree to 20V power delivery at 5A, which gives a toasty 100 watts.

Color Does Not Imply Power

Thank you for the reply.

So, simply getting an Anker power bank with a blue USB type-A port guarantees 5 volts, but they could be anywhere from 500 milliamperes minimum? Or, it might give more?

Indirectly a blue port does imply power

By the USB standard a blue port is supposed to indicate a port in compliance with USB 3.0. Although some cheap manufacturers my not subscribe to this, having bought numerous Anker products, I would suspect that Anker does follow the standard.

Indirectly, USB 3.0 also means the ability to carry 900mA or 0.9A, which translates into 4.5 watts.

USB 3.0 also added a 5 Gbits/s (625 MB/s) "super speed" capability which is more than ten times as fast as the 480 Mbit/s (60 MB/s) high speed of USB 2.0. USB superspeed cables are supposed to have "SS" on the connector. I would not spend extra for an SS cable for Garmin related purposes.

By the way, I noticed that some of Anker's power banks are on sale on their website. The sale price may or may not be on Amazon so worth a check.

Right angle usb cable.

I just purchased from Amazon 2 right angle usb cables to power my phone in my vehicle and they are right angle and can be flipped left to right and still work great.
