Junction View unlock files - a survey

In another thread, we've discovered that the new 2014.10 City Navigator NA map update has--at least for the nuvi 2460--installed a DxxxxxxA.jcv file and also includes a DxxxxxxA.unl file of the same filename in the jcv folder.

One person has tried replacing the default jcv file, above, with the large full-screen JCV file offered by Garmin but found that the large JCV does not work. It may well be possible that starting with the current 2014.10 map, the nuvi 24xx series requires jcv files with .unl files (just like the map's .img file requires a .unl file to show the map).

Older nuvis (the 8x5, for example) have no JCV .unl files with 2014.10.

I ask that folks with the newer nuvi models who have updated to 2014.10 to check and see if the folder containing their jcv file also includes a unl file. If this is a new feature of map updates, we'll need to alter our thinking of using the large jcv file from Garmin (currently D3060100A.JCV) for folks who want the largest full-screen JVs to display.

What do you see in your nuvi after the 2014.10 update?

This is confusing since we now have two reports on the nuvi 3790 and 2014.10, one with an unl and one without.

The one without must have been pirated.

Will verify and experiment more tonight with correct Settings

Thank you for confirming my theory. Why Garmin insists on complicating things is beyond me.

What is accomplished by putting a unlock file on a junction view file. It makes no sense to me. Without the correct unlocked City Navigator map, and a compatible unit with junction view, the junction view file is useless.

Hopefully simply1234 will rename the folder on his SD card and report back the full screen is working.

Edited: CraigW I saw your other post with you trying to help simply1234. In that post he states folder on the sd card is Garmin\JVC (typo?), and this thread it's "gadmin\jcv". I think it's a typo in both threads. He substituted a d instead of an r in gadmin.

I do admit I've done the JVC error in the past myself.

Both Gentlemen:

I thank you both gentlemen for great assistance without being cynical or full of sarcasm. I have seen other sites where if an obvious mistake (like typo, or spelling) was erroneously entered, a poster is literally showered with all kinds of verbal and intellectual abuses... We are all human and we make mistakes, especially in this POI-Factory post where the "EDIT box" fonts are in some kind of burgundy color (by default?) and it's hard to see see what you are typing when the laptop screen is NOT tilted just at the right angle of view.

I may have typed in the directory structure with a typos, but the actual directory structure I had it on the MicroSD card is correctly entered as: \Garmin\JCV... Please pardon my earlier typos.

I will experiment more tonight and report back. Thank you again to both you gentlemen and scholar(?)...

Let Us Know Results

Indeed we all make mistakes and should not be criticized for them. But as we all have experienced, having one dot in the wrong place or a typo will cause things to not function on Pc's and GPS's alike. That's why is so important when troubleshooting to have the facts correct.

I'm confident when you complete your test tonight, your full screen Junction View will appear.
If not, please advise and we’ll investigate farther.

It WORKED, but read on...

Gents:

I just tried the full 750MB+ish file directly into the Nuvi internal drive inside the .\system\jcv directory. Following up on CraigW's suggestion to just copy the file into the 2460 since the 2460's internal storage space was 8GB to start with, and I showed about 2.2 GB remaining space.

Before I go into details, it WORKED, with with a caveat... I turned on the simulation feature on and simulated going from Philly to Baltimore, MD. This is the road I use every other week when I travel for business meetings. It is some 130 miles with number of exit junctions. I know this, because I used my older 1490LMT with the latest JCV file loaded and I can confirm that the photo-real JCV on my 1490 is "really photo real," to say the least.

However, the alleged "full screen view" on 2460 with the larger 750MB'ish JCV file, is really NOT a full screen. The dashboard information bar took up the bottom (about 1/8) screen real estate. And worse yet, the alleged photo-real jcv view was "stretched" across the width of screen.

It looked as though you are viewing the 480 standard screen (as in SD TV mode) stretched on your modern HDTV on 16x9 1080i screen. It looked hideous.... I was disappointed... I wanted the FULL JCV view like the one I see on my nuvi 1490. What a disappointment after all these tries....

Well, guess I will have to chock this up as a wishful thinking and revert back to the 1/2 screen JCV views... Wah !!! wah !!

Thank you both, gentlemen, for guiding me so patiently with my experiment and hope the results of my experiment can be shared with others so that the next Nuvi2460 user in the POI-Factory does not try to "RE-INVENT" the wheels...

That's great<?>

Interesting news.

I had expected some stretching since the 5" nuvis have a screen 112x63mm or essentially 16:9 while the 4.3" nuvi models are 99x78mm, about 5:4. What I hadn't expected is the info bar using 1/8th of the 2460 screen making the stretching even more pronounced. Thanks for the report.

Thanks For Advising

In my opinion you are not missing much not being pleased with the full screen JV on the 2460.
As CraigW and I stated, we prefer the split screen.

When I did have the full screen on my 2460 the image of the junction view only remained for sveral seconds then disappeared. With the split screen the image remains visible until after you have passed the junction.
