2014.10 woes

Earlier today I started on updating both the 855 and 3790 to 2014.10.

I followed allanb's directions to install on a SD card and it worked, map showed in the GPS. Then I became greedy and added the large JCV file and the s h i t hit the fan. 855 did not want to boot up, fortunately before I started anything I made a complete back-up. Once I got the computer to recognize the GPS again, I deleted (not formatted) the whole GPS and used my back up to restore to 2013.4.

Now comes the real strange part. I used Garmin Express to try and update to 2014.10 again and in the lower right corner a box came up asking if I wanted to back up the GPS and then install. NO mention about not enough space.

Once that started the 855 was updated on its own internal memory memory in 15 minutes and it also told me I have 1.2GB of space still. The USB on the 855 is slower than the second coming and to be able to install in 15 was amazing.

I am now good on both the 855 and the 3790.

jcv

When you added the large jcv to the 855, did you disable the small one that came with the map update?

Will you try again or is the 855 just a backup GPS to your 3790 and you'll be satisfied with the 855's small file? Just curious.

On my 855 (map on nuvi, jcv on SD card), the 855 boots up and on a simulated route with a couple JVs, both displayed in fullscreen as a photorealistic image as I had hoped.

1.2 GB free space?

If you have the full NA map and 1.2 GB of free space on the internal memory of your 855, you are missing something ... the ASR (speech recognition) files maybe?

You are probably right. I removed a huge 769.*** and a few other files from the ASR folder.

By what you are saying then the command speech capability is not there now?

I can reinstall them, everything is saved. They still are not 1.2GB all in all.

Yes, this is basically my back-up unit and not the everyday GPS.

I'm not sure if the ASR files you tend to reinstall are the ones you backed up with the 2014.10 map installation or are from a previous map version.
Like the junction view file, the two files related to voice command (.ASR & .SRX) should be those that came with the map version.

Well I looked at the ASR file I saved from the 855 before I finally got updated to 2014.10.

The file is 0478SP1D.ASR size 769.578kb
Date 5/15/2013

The file in there now is 048UHSE9.ASR 769.819kb
Date 13/06/2013

So I think this was installed with my update since I did not copy it into the 855 and I assume I should be OK.

I wonder now if this is the way to fool the Garmin downloader. Remove something like the huge ASR file and then let it update and also reinstall a new ASR file. As I mentioned I was totally amazed at getting the download with GE in 15 minutes by selecting "Back up GPS" and then let it install the update.

The ASR file on my 2460 with 2014.10 (full North America) is exactly like yours "048UHSE9.ASR 769.819kb'.

I'm a bit surprised since I don't think the 2460 and 855 have identical features regarding voice command.
Have you tried the voice command features to make sure they work properly?

OOOps, just came back from a run on the highway. Forgot to test the command on the 855. Will do later.
