Nuvi 2407,2408,2507,2508 and the 3597 series

Starting this forum topic for members to post any tips or details on how to start a feature on these series Nuvis.Or any question you may have to other users.

Found this feature I like. Directions to me.For your friends without a gps.Touch vehicle on map screen, touch 3 bars top left and directions to me.Just select from the list for the address to start from and touch select to get directions to relay to your party.

Working together maybe we can shorten the learning curve. Finding lots of features now located different locations.

Why

Why not add the 3597 to that list as it works the same way, as far as your example is concerned.

I often run my Nuvi's in simulation mode for a number of different reasons. On the 3597 you turn simulation mode on using:

Settings - Navigation - Down Arrow - GPS Simulator - Tap the Check Box - OK

My other 2 newest Nuvi's are the 3790 and 2460 and on both of those you turned on Simulation Mode by:

Tools - System - Settings - GPS Simulator - On - Yes - Save

I don't know if this change this is a change from models newer than my 2460 or 3790 but thought I'd mention it just in case it is.

Voice commands

I emailed Garmin about the voice command for custom pois. This is the reply on my 2597. Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to assist you. Unfortunately voice command does not work with custom POI's. It will only work with the preloaded POI's.

The voice commands do work well inside the house for testing. Except custom pois. Not sure I am buying in to the voice commands not working for custom pois.Has anyone got them to work on these units?

What are

What are you looking for with having Custom POIs work with the voice commands? I can see maybe having a command on the main Voice Command screen called "Custom POIs" which would bring up a list of your installed Custom POIs. After that I think your stuck.

The unit has the ability to look up POIs that are in the preinstalled map data using voice commands, if you speak a specific category or ask to View Categories. At that point it just lists the places it finds within a given category or list the titles of all categories and you can pick one, and again it lists places within it.

What is sounds like your asking for is to have the ability to select a given POI file from a list that YOU installed. If so that would mean that the Voice Command system would need to be able to understand MacDonalds, or Chevron, etc. as that's what your POI files would be called. The voice command system for preinstalled POI's can't do that, so I'm not sure how it could work for Custom POIs when every Nuvi in the world would have different files with different names.

I agree with you that the voice commands system works pretty well on these new units.

With the 8XX series you can access individual custom POI by voice command. From the Map View screen, you activate the voice commands by touching the "magic button" attached to the steering wheel and tell it "Main Menu." From there it's Extras, Custom POI and then paging down the list of categories until you select the correct one. From there you can select individual lists and then individual POI by paging down and calling out the line number.

Trying to select custom pois and select from my pois for example Cracker Barrel. You can select from the pre installed pois by example just McDonalds. Just use voice command and say find place then you can say a invidual business.

Tried what Boxcar posted with no luck. Different commands for each unit.

The voice command process is pretty easy. Like it that commands are posted on the screen.

You will get option to replace with another one.Once you select the new service make sure to save.To change the order touch the far right icon by the service and while pressing slide to the order you want it in.

Customize the Where To Screen

By default when you press Where To? on the 3597 you get a screen with an "Enter Search" field, A Searching Near field, a Go Home icon, Address Search icon, and shortcut icons to list built in POIs for restaurants, gas stations, shopping, , and an Add Shortcuts icon.

If you have added Custom POIs to your Nuvi or SD card a Custom POIs icon will also be displayed.

To add additional item/category icons to this screen you simply press "Add Shortcuts" and pick from the list provided. This listing allows you to add an icon for any of the established categories (Rest Areas, Recreation, etc.) to the screen. You can also add an icon to list specific places like Starbucks, Your Bank's ATM locations, or any of your Favorites (called Saved Places on these devices). Finally icons for Intersections, Cities, and Coordinates search can be added (all there by default on older Nuvi's).

Adding items to the Where To search screen is pretty easy because the Add Shortcut icon is right there in front of you, BUT what if you want to delete one of the shortcuts already on the screen by default or one you have placed there and don't need any longer. The procedure is there it's just hard to find.

To delete a shortcut you need to press the 3bar icon in the top left corner of the search screen. That brings up a menu where you can Set Home Location or REMOVE SHORTCUT(S). Tapping the Remove Shortcut(s) entry brings up a screen with all the shortcuts you have placed on the search screen (including those there by default, except for the Go Home entry), with a red X beside each one.

Find the icon you wish to remove and tap on it. A red box will appear that reads Touch to Remove. Tap that red box and the item dissappears from the screen. NOW THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART - TAP SAVE in the lower right corner of the screen. If you fail to do that the icon you just removed will magically reappear.

Multipile routes

I like the feature of getting more then one route to select from on some locations.Search for a location, select location, select routes and pick the one you want.

Once you select go for a location.Located lower right of navigation screen next to the 3 horz bars. If you touch that area and once the next screen comes up.Touch any one of the selections and it will replace the one you now have showing.I changed direction to arrival time.

This was available on other Nuvi's (37xx and 24xx that I have) and was called Prompted Calculation Mode. On the models that support it, you can set it up via Tools - Navigation - Automobile - nuRoute - Calculation Mode - Prompted - Save. Once setup the Nuvi would display on the map screen, each time you entered a destination, a map showing the Faster Time route, the shortest distance route, and the less fuel route. You picked the one you wanted.

With the new devices you don't need to set the prompted routing up as it's set that way by default and I don't think you can turn it off. But you can always get a single default route calculation by pressing GO instead of Routes.

This IMHO is a step backwards over the last generation of Nuvi's. Those models allowed you show 3 separate data fields on the right hand side of the map screen if you set the Nuvi up to display More Data. Basically the available display data on these new models is exactly the same as the old ones BUT will allow you to display ONLY ONE field, instead of 3, at the same time.

What is the One Shot feature on my device?

Some devices that use voice-activated navigation allow you to perform One Shot address entry and One Shot point of interest (POI) searches. This means that you are now able to say the full address or POI in one continuous sentence to locate the destination rather than using multiple voice commands for the house number, street, city, and state.

The One Shot address entry and POI searches feature is currently only available on the following devices:

Question

Does anyone know if it's possible to set an audible alarm when the speed limit is exceeded by a certain gap (e.g. 10Mph above limit) on a Garmin 3597? I used to have that feature on my previous gps (tomtom) and really appreciated having that handy feature. Thanks.

Be careful

Be careful what you ask for. laugh out loud I haven't attempted this with the 3597 but on my 3790 or 2460 (can't remember which) I was able get a tone when I exceeded the speed limit. The problem with the Nuvi, as compared to the TomTom, is that you can't set when you want to hear the tone go off. If you exceed the speed limit by 1 mph it will produce 3 bongs and will continue to produce that same sound every few seconds as long as you remain over the limit. It will drive you crazy!

I'm not 100% sure how I turned this feature on as I normally drive with the sound muted. When I needed to unmute the device a while back I discovered this very annoying feature. After hours of research and trial and error I finally got it turned off so I can only assume that I can now turn it back on if I wanted to, which I don't.

If you really want this feature I'm willing to post the procedure but I'll guaranty you will not like the results.

No thx, I'll pass.

If that's the case, I'll simply forget that idea. If I can't specify a speed gap over which the alarm kicks off, then it's not what I'm looking for.

In Canada where I live, it is tolerated to drive 18-20 km/h over the speed limit on highways. My tomtom was playing the sound of my choice as soon as I exceeded a gap I specified, in this particular case 120 km/h for example. Then I would reduce my speed and no longer hear that sound, at least for a while. It was just a security measure for me to avoid tickets. But I don't want to be annoyed as soon as I exceed the speed limit by just 1 km/h, it would indeed drive me crazy.

I will simply stick to my cruise control instead. Thanks grin

2597

Finally took the 2597 out for a spin. The voice Samantha was very clear and softer compared to the same voice on my 265.Like the no calculating command not being there anymore. The active lane guidance and Bird's eye junction view were great for getting on and off the interstate. The new Garmin real directions directions are nice.

Voices

Greetings,

I'm working on a Garmin Voice version thread:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40282

and ask for help from your nuvi xxx7 owners.

The older nuvi models use Text to Speech voice files that are .vpm files.

The newer models (2013 models, 3597 only or all xxx7 models?) use newer files. These are .TTS3 and maybe .TTS2 files. If anyone can help identify what models use these new TTS2 and TTS3 files instead of the old vpm files, I will appreciate your effort and update my thread. The big questions I have today are 1) whether the TTS3 files are used only for the nuvi 3597 or if they're used on more models and 2) does any model use TTS2 voice files?

I'm also trying to identify the names, version numbers and availability dates of all nuvi English language voices so if you have additions, corrections or updates to what I have listed, I will appreciate that as well.

3597 Startup Screen

Hello everyone,

Is there any way to change the startup screen on the 3597? I have recently seen in diagnostics there is a picture viewer handy, however, don't have any idea what folder it may use. I would figure if there a picture folder available, people that may be interested to change their startup screens could utilize this feature.
Or maybe...this may be a firmware stop by Garmin?
Thanks for your help!

Cheers!

No way

I don't think that is possible with the 3597. Only the nuvi models with a photo viewer will allow you to do that, which is not the case with the 3597 unfortunately. See: http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2010/03/ask-garmin-persona...

Notice this change on my

Notice this change on my unit.Sure this applies to all.Members have been reporting for certain models. If you have loaded any custom POI's that are speed or red-light cameras, you will notice that you will not receive an option to hit 'Go' to those locations.

The Go To is back on the 2597. Not really sure how important that is but they did change it back.

2597

On a trip to Williamsburg catching some sites plus Busch Gardens. Seen this reported before on other models. Noticed if you go over the posted speed on the GPS it turns to a orange like color for the speed that you are over it.

The new driving directions takes some getting use to. My end destination was a candle shop. Located on left side of road. When the announcement was made it said off road and posted same message in the banner area. I am thinking what is going on here. Is the unit messing up or do I go on a unpaved road which I know is not correct. When I arrived at the candle shop it was clear.Just means off the road of travel on left side.

Red Light Cameras

Noticed today when going down 19 in central FL. Red Light cameras are every where. The icon provided by the site really shows well on the map.The road is magenta in color on the map and the icon showing covers the full width of the road.No squinting your eye to see it. At one time up to four Red Light icons showed. Do have map layers set to show up ahead.

I know YOU have a 2597, but I have a Nuvi 2598. which must be near enough??
My Voice commands will access Favourites. I have a lot of my custom poi's as favourites.

However I would like to ADD a CATEGORY e.g. Airfields in which I want to put some of the airfields in my collection.

Can anybody tell me how to do that?

Having done t hat, how do I copy the present airfields listed as favourites into my new category?
You may have gathered I am a fairly new user of the 2598.

How to get a tone when I exceeded the speed limi

G'day mate im new to this forum , my Dad bought a nuvi 2597LMT for mum to replace her old Tom Tom because the Map was old but also the Tom Tom didn't have Spoken Street names, but it did have a audio speed warning which she liked very much , when they were setting up the Garmin they could get a tone for the speed cameras but not for when they are over-speeding, i know you said it would get annoying , but mum got a Speeding ticket for going a couple Kph over the limit when she was visiting me in hospital you mentioned you could post how to get the Over Speed warning if anybody wanted the directions , mum is getting old and its hard for her to concentrate on so many things like keeping an eye out for Speed limit signs then to keep an eye on her speedo or watch the Garmin for the red flashing speed warning and to keep an eye out for traffic and the streets signs, sometimes you may turn onto a road but not see a Speed limit sign for a couple K's but buy then it could be to late if the police are waiting , i would appreciate any help , u can either post a reply or email me direct..
Thanks Ismet

Speed Limits - Beware

itchy666 wrote:

... you mentioned you could post how to get the Over Speed warning if anybody wanted the directions ...

Welcome to the POI Factory Ismet. I don't know how to enable an alarm on mine, so I can't answer your question directly, but I have a thought on the subject. The speed limit info that Garmin (and others) displays is dependent on information that someone else inputted into a database. While it is often correct, it can also be inaccurate or out of date. There is a road near my home where the posted speed limit is 60; in the last mile it drops to 45. The GPS thinks it is 60 all the way. If I depended on the GPS and not the posted sign, I would most certainly get a ticket sooner or later and it would be my fault, no one else's.
