Garmin routing a longer route

I make a certain trip several times annually. The Garmin always trys to route me a certain way, mainly major interstate. However, if I perfer to take a known alternate rout, mainly a four lane highway, that is both shorter and takes less time. Once the Garmin figures out that I'm not going to turn around, then it routes me the way I want to go in the first place, ultimately showing my arrival time to be sooner than when programed the initial route. I've tried playing with all the options (shorter route, fastest route, avoidances, etc) to no avail. Why does it do this and is there a way to force a certain route?

What Garmin

Your profile does not say what unit you have. Let us know because different units have different options for avoidances.

My 255w

Shortest route = back roads
Fastest route= Beltway
But Fastest route seems to want me to go thru the city versus I95. Go figure

Route

If I am reasonably familiar with a route I will quite often overrule the GPS and put up with the bloody "RECALCULATING".
Regardless of what settings are used, avoid tolls, ferries etc it still has a mind of its own!

But some time ago a test was done putting Garmin, Maggellan and TomTom on a head to head test. The Garmin came up best for routing all around!

Routing

I have observed all the Garmin's that I have owned to give other than optimum routing occasionally. If I know the route, usually locally, I ignore the GPS. It will catch up with you eventually. If I don't know the route, I don't care if it is the optimal or not. I want to get to a specific place and the GPS does an outstanding job of getting me there. If it takes a couple of minutes longer than local knowledge, so be it.

Where did you make a previous comment? Or, do you have two ID's here?

intermediate points

My usual preferred method for your exact circumstances is to ask the Garmin to route me to one or more intermediate points along the route I prefer before the destination.

In general I think my Garmins (an 855 and more recently 3790 LMT) behave better when guiding to a single destination point than they do when using routes, so I usually prefer to implement this technique just by finding the required intermediate point or two in advance and fetching them and the final destination from the recently used list when needed. But, of course, one can also use the trip planning function this way as an alternative.

Nope, I was just trying to be as useful as the quoted comment.

HUH ?

Quotes and netiquette, part deux

@pb46: You must be new to the Internet. Your skin is still too thin.

not2bright's comment, while not adding to the discussion, was not offensive at all. Compared to your outbursts, which are completely unwarranted, I found it rather funny.

A true example of quoting out of context can be found in every commercial for a movie that has the blurbs like "A feast for the eyes". The actual line where "A feast for the eyes" was pulled from could be something along the lines of "The opening fifteen minutes was a feast for the eyes, but then the narrative bogged down from there, leading to a dull experience".

Juggernaut quoted you properly. "Talk about useful info" is a separate idea from "If you don't like my comment, don't read it." If he had quoted absolutely everything, it would have diluted his point, which is to call you out. So where are your other comments?
