No longer able to update maps to your computer's Mapsource or Basecamp

Just got off the phone with Garmin tech support. I was updating my 2 Garmin devices with the new Garmin Express. It seems that everytime I update a map Garmin has come up with a "new and improved" method to update your maps. With this new Garmin Express there is no longer a way to update your maps on your computer. INSANE!

He says you now have to plug your device in and Basecamp reads the maps from the device. Mapsourse is just history. So let me see now...if I want to create a route on my computer, I have to take the device out of my car/Jeep, bring it inside, hook it up to my computer before I can create routes on any map from 2013.4 or later.

I've bought a dozen Garmin units since the GPS 45 came out, and been responsible for a 100 or more sales. No more if this isn't fixed.

I do a lot of travel and a lot of off road driving. Does anyone know of another brand of GPS that has decent maping software/hardware? I'm fed up with Gramin.

.

Just use the Map Updater program. It has been well discussed in the 2013.40 map threads.

used the same old GarminMapUpdater_v3.1.19.exe installer

I used the same old GarminMapUpdater_v3.1.19.exe installer that I used for the prior map update. Just connected the 3790 to the computer double clicked the old saved installer from last year and away it went with no further updates needed and in the option area selected to install maps to the GPS and the computer. Newly installed maps show in both MapSource and BaseCamp with no unit connected.

I also ran the same updater software on my laptop and selected the install the map update to the computer only and worked fine that way also.

Map updater

I selected device and pc. Saved installation files. Then connected second device. It was easy. The US & Canada fit nicely on the 1450 without using the card. Then I downloaded the large JCV for the card on both the 1450 and 1490.

Question: I only have ONE GPS(r), a Nuvi 1450. Why should I want to save the installation files on my computer?

You

You don't need to. The only time that saving the installation files is of value is when you are updating multiple devices. When you tick the box to save those files it even tells you not to tick it if it's the last GPS your updating.

Big difference

There is a big difference between "saving the installation files" and installing the latest map version on a computer.

If the maps are installed on the computer, it's not necessary to connect the gps to the computer to create routes using Mapsource and Basecamp.

Some problems here, Garmin Express did the update, failed, and then I had a a 1450 LMT with no map. (been there done that...)Soooo... loaded 2013.30 with MapSource, and I'm back to where I started.

I then used MapSource, updated, and no problem. Now at least I have a saved 2013.40 on my computer, also on my 1450 8 gig class 10 SD card. I keep the large JCV file in internal memory.

Still have almost 3/4 gig with internal memory.

Garmin Express in it's infinite programming wisdom sees my 1450 and it's SD card as two different 1450's, go figure...

Garmin Express would nOT run on my Macbook.

I always HATE being cut-out of updates and new software.

Still, I was able to use the Lifetime Map Updater, so it's all good. grin

Remove GarminDevice.xml from SD

VS44a wrote:

This is usually caused by having a copy of file GarminDevice.xml on your SD card. Having that file on SD is the technique that is used for "cloning" your device for a map update. But once the update is finished, the file should be removed. If you remove file GarminDevice.xml from the SD card, your 1450 should not show up twice in the Garmin software.

Have to Wonder

Why, if it ain't broke, they insist on fixing it.

Traffic sub-optimal after FW update

I'm convinced that the traffic functionality took a hit (for the worse) after one of the recent FW updates; I just don't know which. Going in the traffic maintenance screens and watching the activity (constant searching, "no signal", "weak signal" and lengthy periods between traffic updates makes it very clear that the the performance is way off what it was previous. Reporting this issue to Garmin just gets me the standard "NTF" (no trouble found) response.

THESE are the kind of things that drive people to smart phone GPS.

Lifetime updater

Lifetime updater worked fine for me. I didn't allow Garmin Express to run and still had LU on the computer. The idea that they wouldn't understand that undermining route planning on the computer without having to connect the device was going to greatly annoy their customer base is puzzling. I'm hoping they'll eventually realize this error and correct it in later editions of Garmin Express.

that's a lie...

I use mapsource all the time to update my maps.

Deleted Garmin Express

MAJOR kudos to those here who posted the link and discussion for getting Garmin Map Updater. I was able to select 'Computer only' on the second update and now both Mapsource and Basecamp see the new map without the device attached. Really makes me shake my head about Garmin. That was one of the selling points of my device; the ability to develop custom routes. And then they ignore their own software for doing that.

Having no further use for Garmin Express, I uninstalled it. As I originally watched GE install, it really installed a bunch of stuff. A background service, a system tray application, etc. I certainly don't need it just to be notified there's an update available.

An interesting note was when I Googled "How to get Lifetime Map into Basecamp", Google pointed me back here, to this very thread.

Agree: Garmin Express is worthless (read sux)

Thankfully, I saved the generation of software that GE was to have replaced.

I'm a MacBook Pro user, so I suffer a double whammy in that Garmin has no use for Mac, nor end users in general.

Apologies to those offended by the subject line....

Still using MyGarmin

I'm still using MyGarmin to install all Garmin updates, including maps, onto my gps and computer so Mapsource will have access to the current map.

Old school, very simple and effective.

myGarmin > GE?

I thought that myGarmin switched to using Garmin Express rather than Garmin Updater and that to use Garmin Updater, you had to go straight to the Garmin Updater download page.

I'm using Garmin Map Update right now to

load 2013.4 on my MacBook Pro for use with BaseCamp.

Map Update and Map Install appear to be all that one needs to successfully circumvent Garmin Express (may a pox descend on that faulty software.). Oh, I guess it already did....

Tech service

When I run into this problem I sent them a email asking how to install the maps to mapsource and the Tech service that answers the emails told me to use the map installer and give me a link for it. So they are ok in my books. But I have not figured out how to get the waypoints from mapsource to the gps. it worked ok on my 1450 but not with the 2495

If you want to use 2495 with MapSource you have to change the nuvi from MTP mode to USB mode.
