Extra_POI_Editor - A tool to View/Edit/Convert POI/TourGuides (Part 1)

Well, I guess it's time I start an official thread about Extra_POI_Editor at POI Factory.

It does too many things for me to explain in a short post, so let's say it will allow you to view, edit and convert (new!) any GPX/CSV/OV2/JPG/KML/MGLN POI file to GPX/CSV/OV2/KML. Yes! Geocoded JPG can be imported too!

* There are preview windows specially designed to simulate a 4.3" widescreen GPS like a nuvi 760, but the program will work for other GPS; the display in the program will not match exactly the non-widescreen GPS.

* The tool will allow you to see the POIs on a map. You can drag also the marker on the map and update the new coordinate. This is very cool to fine tune the POI location.

* You can also preview linked images and sound files used in TourGuides.

* EPE can do batch geocoding and reverse geocoding. It has special filters to extract State, Postcode, Phone and more. You can create custom column formats for your CSV files input and output, ...

* You can open POI Loader, MapSource or GoogleEarth directly from EPE to see all POIs on the map.

This is it for now. It does more than that and will probably do more later. Please post your comments and suggestions here.

Turbo.

Oh yeah! For those who do not know, the download link is here:

If you right-click on the device do you have a "Map Network Drive..." option in the pop-up menu?

No I can not do that.. What I get is "Open, explore, import pitctures, create shotcut, and properties. I am thinking of doing a DOS subst but not surethat will work, going to give it a try anyways when done here.

I would love to hear from others that hav this and is or is not working for them. I want to get this to work with this great application!

Current.gpx file path?

I have no clue. I do not know the 2455lmt. I can't imagine Garmin made a GPS that cannot have custom POIs or ways to copy favorites. I hope there are other 2455 users out there than can help. Sorry.

I can use poi loader and it finds it ok. I can also Use the Base map (Mapsourse) but I have to look for Curent.gpx manully and that displays as "{000000AA-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" which I dont understand. Any help here would be a great help!

My older GPS did fine.. I sure hope other users have the same unit and can help us out. I am sure it is something I am doing wrong!

Thanks in advance!

When using BaseCamp, you said you have to find the file manually. Questions:

1- What is the path? Please show me the path.

2- Can you try to find the file manually with EPE using the same path?

3- In BaseCamp, you said you select Current.gpx, but once loaded BaseCamp reports the file name as "{000000AA-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}". Is that what you meant?

I will Try to explain...

As we speak I opened up the Mapsource.

I click on "File, Open" A digbox opens and using the pull down in "look in" I see a blue Triangle with the words Nuvi 2455, There is no Drive letter here

Clicked this. I now see "Internal Storage", clicked that, Now I see the Folders in the GPS device (one being GPX folder which I click on.

I now Need to click On "All files" in the file type, I will not see "Current.gpx" if I do not. I locate the File and click on it. Once I do that, Under file name, I see the "{000000AA-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" file name with no extention. If I click open, I will see theSaved favortes.

Does thisd help? Has anyone else said anything about this?

Using EPE, I try to "Open up the file but since I do not have a Choice to see "ALL files" I can not click and open it. You only have a choice for "All Supported files" in File type.

Again I hope this helps!

NOTE.. i just tried something and it worked, I made a copy of my GPS and placed it in My D: Drive. I tried to open the Current.gpx file there and that did work! However, I am afraid to copy this file back to the GPS for it could mess up the saved favotes in the gps?!!?

Not sure what is going on!

EDIT- I renamed the current.gpx file and tried to see it using EPE but still could not see it.

Drive Letter

@bobkz,

If you are using Win7 have you tried the following

1) click "Start > Computer"
2) On the line below the menu items click "Map Network Drive" and you should get a popup.
3) In the 1st dropdown assign a drive letter
4) In the 2nd dropdown assign the Garmin drive

Hope this helps.

Also recently read somewhere that holding SHIFT while right clicking will bring up the "Map Network Drive". I don't have any unmapped drives to test this with.

see all files

To see all files without having to change the file type, just type *.* and click Open. It will display all files regardless of the file type.

That worked

Ok, I can open up the file but when I do click on it once, it shows in the file name as "{000000AA-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" then I click Open and it does open, and if I look at the top, (the file that It is opening it shows the following (truncated of course) "C:\Document and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internhet files\Content.ie5\1b1eys5x\Current[1].gpx.

Let me see if I change something, will it take.. I am using My test file for this that Is located in the same place as current.gpx.

Nope, it does not.. Says that path is not vaild and/or is in use by another application

Let me try the save as, and overwrite the file?!? WOW! I dont even see the device now.

This is intresting. I am a IT guy so I know what to look for but I have not run into something like this.

BTW I did try using the mapping feature (I use XP) and It will only let me map to a network drive which my machine see this as a DE#VICE (exsample A prnter, a camera) these do not get a mapping.

So now what?

So it looks like Windows is opening the file via Internet Explorer by "downloading" the file and opening the copy in the browser cache.

bobkz wrote:

Can you use Windows Explorer to copy the file to a local folder, open that file in EPE and edit it, and then copy the new version back to the "device"?

File-Type Associations

Try changing the associations to the file so that .gpx's and .gpi's are opened by EPE.

File-Type Association

@Juggernaut:

I do not think this will work. The problem is the file location. What is it doing there? It is like a temporary file location used by Internet Explorer while running a javascript apps that ran when BaseCamp was used. It copied the file locally using the Garmin API so that BaseCamp could open the file.

My conclusion would be that the Garmin API is required. Since EPE is not using it, you can't see the files or the GPS.

.

You're probably right, but I thought I'd throw it out there as a possible solution.

Nice tool and very useful

Nice tool and very useful

I just wanted you to know of the issue.

I just wanted you to know what the issue was. This will not stop me in using your great application but wanted you to be aware of the issue. I still can copy the Current.gpx file to the local drive, edit it and copy it back, That seems to work.

But if anyone will try to use your application by directly trying to edit the GPS, with the 2012 units, they may have issues.

I hope that I helped and gave you all the information you need. I am willing to help in anyway that I can if you need anyone to test or anything.

Path?

Hi Bobkz,

I will take you on your offer because something seems to have changed since your last post.

If you can copy Current.gpx to the local drive and back to the GPS, what file path do you use on the GPS? Or which application do you use? BaseCamp?

If there is a definitive path not starting by C:\, then I am interested to know which one.

Also, I could provide you with a little program that will scan all your drives and display them. It would be interesting to see if I can find drives that are not visible in My Computer.

Change From MTP to Mass Storage Mode

According to the Garmin support FAQ (http://goo.gl/bwvhP), the nuvi 2455 is configured in MTP mode, so it will not appear on the computer as a removable drive (e.g. G:\)

To reconfigure to the traditional mass storage mode:

  • From the map, select Trip Computer
  • Hold the speedometer for 30 sec.
  • Set MTP Settings -> Mass Storage

The 2455 will now appear as a removable disk drive.

The information how to do this came from a couple of other forums.

Nice catch, thanks.

it makes sense!

I should have thought of that. The 34xx was doing the same thing...

Will try that!!

I will try that When i get home tonight.. THanks for the tip.

Will report in when I try it. THat would make things so much easier.

Turboccc, What I was talking about was that I would open up the garmin by clicking on the device, manully copy the file to my C: drive, then using EPE to open it up. After editing it, I would then just copy it back to the device, that seemed to work.

I will try that info tonight and let you know what happends, Hope it works.. THanks for your hard work and patince!

That did it!

I hope this will help other with this software and any other problems when you dont have a drive mapping.

When doin this, It give the GPS drive a drive mapping and any program will work using this method.

Thanks everyone.

What happened to this?

Needing to convert CSV to GPX.

--

Not maintained anymore

Just open the CSV in the Editor and save as Garmin GPX. Done.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

EPE

Don't see how to edit a POI file. Just need to change one clients address.

POI Editor

Once you have the file open in the editor, scroll down to the entry you want to edit and double click on it. A new window will open over the main window allowing you to see all the fields available and make any changes needed. Once the desired changes are made click the "OK" button at the bottom and be sure to save the file before exiting the editor.
