No

I used GE with my 3490 and Mapsource did not update to 2013.4.

Not an option

WAASup wrote:

@williston: Were you able to do an install to computer with GE?

It was not offered to me as an option.

NOTE to others: Someone right next to me was installing at the same time using GE. There were poking around and going to different screens while the downloading and prep were going on and things seemed to hang. They had to close the window and re-start. It picked up where it left off on the map download (48%).

My advice is to leave it alone once it has started until completion.

Insuffienct space with 2555lmt and 2013.40

I am doing the update using GE with 2013.40 on my new Garmin and I get the message "Insuffient space" and I have to install the map on my SD card.

This seems a bit odd for the very first map update?? I would think GE would remove the old map to create the required space. I just happened to have an old 8 GB SD card around so I am installing to the SD card at this point.

Seems odd to be out of space so quickly. I also deleted all languages except english but still got "insuffient space" message

On my 1490LMT

It took 1 hr 20 minutes using GE. Didn't offer me the choice but put the maps on my SD card where the old maps were !

Happy Camper !

Now to wait out where the large JCV file is so we can download it !

Aborted update using garmin express, using map updater

I used myGarmin and it downloaded Garmin Express. I installed it and it wanted to start with every windows start and install a core function. It just wants to do too much stuff. Don't see a pause download function which I need. I also just read a post that said a copy of the map is not available to Mapsource.

I uninstalled Garmin Express and am running Garmin Map Updater now. I've selected the option to save a map copy on the computer for mapsource.

I just want to have a bit more control of the whole process than Garmin Express gives.

Garmin Lifetime Updater

Downloading using Garmin Lifetime Updater. I know that there are many complains about the software but it worked flawlessly for me in past.

I used the same old GarminMapUpdater_v3.1.19.exe installer

I used the same old GarminMapUpdater_v3.1.19.exe installer that I used for the prior map update. Just connected the 3790 to the computer double clicked the old saved installer from last year and away it went with no further updates needed.

Took about 1 1/2 hours from start to completed install in both the 3790LMT and my computer.

I downloaded it to my 4

I downloaded it to my 4 units on 4 different computers and it went pretty fast but, like most others, it didn't give me the option to also install on my computer, except ONE, and that one instlled on my computer (mapsource) as well as my unit. Odd. Maybe someone will figure out what we have to do to install on to computer, also. Most likely, we will have to reinstall, but to computer only.

ho hum, it all done

I just finished install with Garmin Map Updater to my Nuvi 2495LMT with a copy on the pc for Mapsource. It appears some old track history was deleted from the GPX/ARCHIVE folder. Quickest update I've done.

If you want a map copy installed to your computer, use the map updater.

Express Failed for my zumo 665

It downloaded the full coverage map in a half hour. It then proceeded to tell me that I didn't have enough room and it did NOT allow me to select the SD card, it was forcing me to select a smaller region. It did during this time have a window that allowed me to select "Device and PC".

So I deleted the map off the zumo, hit the back button to try again. After hitting the back button I could no longer continue again. Just had to delete the whole mess.

I started backup copy of "GarminMapUpdater v3.1.19" and am downloading the maps to device and PC again.

I usually have good luck with Garmin's new software releases, not today. Oh well!

You may want to clear your browser cache as the update is available via Garmin Express, Garmin MapUpdater and the myMaps section of my myGarmin.com account (although under myDashboard it shows my maps are up to date rolleyes )

Haven't looked at Garmin Lifetime Updater so can't comment on whether the update appears there or not.

Yup ... same here. GE advised of the update, estimated 28 min to completion and then failed with an error. Insufficient space.
Guess I'll get out tomorrow to pick up an 8GB SD card .....sigh!!!!

Updated with Express

Took about 1.75 hrs.

Garmin 250 before update internal storage 1.8 GB, 10 MB free, SD card 14.8 GB, 14.8 GB free, after internal
1.79 GB free, 0.06 GB used, SD card 12.9 GB free, 1.9 GB used( includes POI, 2 pictures that was on before update). So I don't believe the Garmin internal storage would have been able to hold the new map.

2013.40

I just finished updating my 755T. I used MapUpdater 3.2.2 and updated directly to SD card using the cloning method. Here are the file sizes for full NA and those for 2013.3. Note that the map grew up by about 49 MB, but the JCV file shrunk slightly. I was glad to see that I still got the large JCV.

Garmin Express map update directly to SD via cloning.

On my 755T, I used the old MapUpdater program, so for my 855 nuvi, I decided to install Garmin Express. Because of the speech recognition files, I know that the 855 does not have room for the full NA map and the large JCV file. So for the past several map updates, I have used the cloning method to install the maps directly to SD card.

Since this was my first experience with Garmin Express, I was not sure what to expect or whether the cloning method would even work with Express. But I will have to say I am pleasantly surprised. Garmin Express recognized my cloned SD card as my 855. The map download and install worked without a hitch. Now all I need to do is rename the map files, copy the large JCV file over from my 755T, and move the new ASR files back over to the 855 internal storage.

I just wish that Garmin would give us the large JCV file when there is room for it on the installation device.

Update from prior post

No werky. 2 devices at once. Updated the 3590 but it hung with the 3790. When i first opened express it told me updates for both were available. Both units were connected. Clicked the update for both. After the first update on the 3590 it gave me an error "Mapset not complete" for the 3790. Tried to reinstall using back button. Sat there and sat there checking the 3790 out. Finally closed Express and re opened it. What I was afraid of, was that it would d/l the mapset again, but it didn't. Couple of minutes later we were done.

I uninstalled GE and re-install life updater and I was able to install on computer and NUVI

not so fond of GE on first use

I installed starting from my.garmin, and was a bit surprised to find that instead of downloading a stub GarminMapUpdater_Vn.n.nn I was downloading Garmin Express. This was my first experience, and it was at best mixed.

1. By its own report it failed a couple of times, and also had prolonged periods at the very beginning of doing nothing. I believe it and my security software do not like one another--and I had to kludge a bit to run it at all.

2. I did not spot any offer combine the download to my 3790 with placing data where my BaseCamp and MapSource could use it--and sure enough they don't have it now, though my 3790 does.

3. I did not spot an offer to allow me to specify where the raw data download should go. It put it on my C drive, which is an SSD with little spare space. So now I have over 5 Gigabytes under c:\ProgramData\Garmin\Core Update Service\MAP-NA-2013-40

If I learn a way to use this copy to populate BaseCamp, and update my second 3790, that will help, but I still don't condone it burning up precious space on my boot SSD without showing me an option I could find.

Other than that, it actually went quite well. For about the first half of the download, the rate was rock stable at 2.1 Mbyte/sec, which was probably throttled by Comcast. It then got more erratic, but the average did not go down much. But I was probably earlier than I have usually been, and this may have nothing to do with Garmin Express.

I still have old copies of GarminMapUpdater on my PC. I always have assumed they only would provide the map version current when they were downloaded. Could I in fact run an old one, and get this new map with the offer to install where BaseCamp/Mapsource can see it?

Anyone know a way to use the downloaded temporary data to load a second 3790 or BaseCamp without going back to the beginning?

learning process

Garmin Express vs. Lifetime updater

Garmin Express(GE) would not overwrite old maps so it gave me the "out of disk space" error.

I uninstalled GE and re-installed Lifetime updater and voila, I was able to install basecamp on my computer and had no issues installing the new maps on my NUVI's.

I guess i won't be using GE for map updates in the future.

Getting Frustrated

I first tried the update and it took asked me to install Garmin Express, so I did. Next, no room on my device, so choose a region. This is a first. Then I tried another of my devices and it says I have already downloaded. I uninstalled Express and tried the Old method of using the updater. Says I have the latest version of Communicator, but always takes me back to installing Express again. Around and around I go. So, how do I get back to the original map updater, or something that first erases the old map, then installs the new? I don't mind change, but sometimes the old tried and true works just as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jon

No printing

Installed to my 765T using GE. Went to Basecamp to load to there via GPS. Loaded to Basecamp. Got notice "Limitation: Printing not allowed with 2013.40." went to Mapsource and 2013.40 is not listed. using Mapinstall to do a computer only update. Will see if printing is permitted then.
