nuvi 245 mt install

got the u.s. harley dealer poi's to install by creating a folder on my desktop rather than using the default download folder they were put in when i downloaded them.when the dealer locator was installed in the default location it would not let me "go to" that dealership by making a route.only by placing them in a created folder could i get the route map to "go to"the selected dealership.

As spokey says, welcome!

Did you use POI Loader to install the file to your nuvi?

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85

When installed with POI Loader, on your nuvi tap WhereTo/Extras/CustomPOIs and you should see the 50 nearest Harley locations to you (as the crow flies). Tap one and you should be given the ability to "Go" to it.

Shout back with more questions if needed.

If things are working pretty well except that the big green "Go" isn't listed, the most common cause of a missing Go button is that the csv or gpx file you downloaded has a numeral in it; i.e., if your file was HarleyDealers.csv, you should get a Go, but if your file was HarleyDealers1.csv or HarleyDealers[1].csv, the Go will be missing. The cure is to remove the numeral, then reload with POI Loader.

i might have had a 1 in front of the file i'm not sure?i am now able to select a route for any of the dealerships listed in by following this path...... where to/categories/scroll down arrow to custom poi's.select dealership/select go.....in the poi file download listed here for the u.s. and canada there was some additional bitmap file selections for the hd icons.not sure what they do or how you use them but i just drove by an hd dealership and there was just a dot showing on the map at the dealership location.i did not have a route to the dealership selected but was just viewing the driving map.i thought there was a way to have the logo apear on the map instead of the dot?

Yes, there is

There is a way:

Icons:

http://www.poi-factory.com/gps-icons

Scroll down from the above link and pick one of these and download it to your computer (I like #3 and #5 best).
•Harley Davidson 1 BMP Icon
•Harley Davidson 2 BMP Icon
•Harley Davidson 3 BMP Icon
•Harley Davidson 4 BMP Icon
•Harley Davidson 5 BMP Icon

You can add alerts and sounds as well:

harley dealers

i have the hd dealer list and it is downloaded to my nuvi but the bit map icon and sound wav file for proximity location does not work.the map shows just a dot for the dealership with no icon. i have all the files in one folder listed as H-D Dealers poi files.in that folder i have H-D Dealers.gpx H-D Dealer.wav(i added the.wav suffix to this file, could that be the problem?) H-D Dealer.bmp and sox file (with no .exe suffix)the gps poi settings are turned on.i beleave i followed all directions for downloading the custom sound wav file on goldwave.i must be messing something up or not have something entered correctly.as of right now i have the poi's and can route to them but i have no icon or proximity notifications either during a route or just viewing the current map view. i would like to be able to route to any selected dealer from the list but what i would also like to do is be notified and show an icon for any harley dealer within 52,800 ft(10 miles) of my current location when riding. i guess i need some help here!

It really sounds like you're using a Windows PC and are seeing the dreaded double-extension problem which prevents installing icons and sounds and which, by the way, has been a problem for very many folks here:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

(See Computer Settings above, Step 5)

Let's first get your Custom POIs working with icons and sounds. But once this is underway, it is possible to receive an alert whenever you're within a 10-mile radius of a dealer and we can work on that later. (Hint: TourGuide)

I think there is a maximum distance for POIs and TourGuides, but it may be 37 miles. I know that I get alerts at 15,000 feet for Rest Areas and I think your 10-mile request is possible as well once we start this 2nd part of your project.

Thanks for the report. Your results are complete enough to help us determine what's going on without further questioning--good work.

poi

went into the cpu windows 7 and made two changes,i selected show hidden files and folders and deselected hide files and folders.after doing so my wav files and bmp files in the poi folder had two extensions.i just renamed them by elliminating the last wav and bmp to the extension so they only listed one.i also went to the sox exe file and right clicked properties and a drop down box appeared with a block on the program.also found a compatability option for window 7 i selected for sox.exe.ithen reinstalled all the poi again.after installing i have the gps running on battery power with the power cord to vehicle connected to gps.the poi's did install but not sure howto check or what i'm looking for on the icon or proximity allert.i suspect either the sox program is not compatable with win 7 or i have some parameters not set for the wav and bmp files to upload correctly.if someone who has windows 7 can guide me thru this it would sure help!

Did you download and use sox.exe from here at The Factory? You need to have the older sox.exe version 14.0.1, not a newer version (and not to be confused with a newer 14.1.0). The correct one can be found here after unzipping:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

The biggest source of sox problems is where you've put it. It needs to be in the folder with your POI Loader.exe file. In Win7, this will likely be in this folder where you will also see POI Loader.exe:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader

Once you've got the right sox.exe in the right folder, you'll not need to worry about this again. sox.exe is only needed for installing your wav files, and is not needed for the bmp icons. Just to be doubly sure -- sox.exe is not to be in the folder with your csv, gpx, wav and bmp files; it's to be with the POI Loader program files, right?

Others may need to address your right-click sox.exe issue. On my Win7 machine, I didn't do anything with it other than download it from The Factory, unzip it, and copy it to the POI Loader folder. I had nothing requiring a compatibility option.

Here's how you can test your files. Once loaded to your nuvi, pull up your Custom POIs, then your Harley dealers POI files and tap the closest one. Instead of tapping Go to go to that Custom POI, tap Map so that you'll see that nearest Harley dealer on a map. Successful icon loading will show your Harley icon in the center of your map while seeing a little black dot means the icon wasn't loaded. Make sure the file names are identical. In your earlier example, your POI file was H-D Dealers.gpx and your audio file was H-D Dealer.wav. Note that one was Dealers and the other was Dealer. The spelling needs to be exactly the same--otherwise the icon won't install and you'll get a default black dot. Ditto for the audio file which would need to be H-D Dealers.wav if your gpx file is what you called it earlier.

You can test the audio and icon by either driving or simulating a route to one of the POIs. As you approach it, you should see the icon on the map and upon arriving, you should receive the audio alert.

Regarding wav audio, did you use one of the sound files from here at The Factory? If so and if it was a mp3 audio file, are you sure you correctly converted it from mp3 to wav? If in doubt, tell us what you did.

Don't give up, you're almost there.

PS--Are you loading the files with POI Loader in Manual (not Express) mode, then checking the alert and setting an alert distance? And if your nuvi requires it, are Proximity Alerts checked in a nuvi page?

In the original post I believe it was stated the extension was changed on the alert sound to WAV. If that's the case, then the alert needs to be converted from whatever format it was in (most likely MP3) to WAV using a program such as AUDACITY.

no sound or bmp icon

i did download the 14-0-1 file from here and used goldwave to set the parameters for the alert sound. i used a custom mp3 file and converted to wav as instructed here.the sound bit plays and the bmp hd icon displays on the cpu but i don't think on the gps.the sound bits were loaded as manual and the parameter was set to 52800 feet. i'll check the functions again tomorrow.

wav file error to gps

tried to make a custom wav file notifier using goldwave to convert file from mp3 to wave.file to my knowledge was converted to wave because when using poi loader to install i got an error code "was unable to convert H-D Dealers.wav" file to proper format.i used the instructions from garmin alerts submitted by charlesd45 on 10/30/ 2011.if i can solve this i might be on to something.

Does this help?

custom poi

craig. i was at this till midnight and finally after reading tips, trips, and work arounds here i double checked some things.i deleted the sox file and reloaded it from sourceforge.net and extracted just the sox.exe file from the folder with all the sox files,i deleted and redid my wave file thru goldwave even though i thought i had this one right.i also deleted the poi loader and reinstalled it again and made sure the poi exe was in the same file.when i reinstalled the poi files to my gps it thru a warning up asking if i wanted sox.exe to change settings on my cpu.ithen knew the sox program was being downloaded to the gps! when the poi loader was done i did not get the error code for the wave file but instead said the install was complete.here's what i have. the icons are on the map with and without a route selected.with a route to a dealer selected i get my custom wave file proximity alert at 10 miles out which is what i selected during install.with no route selected as i near a poi dealer the audio alert sounds also.don't know the default value why it does this but i'm guessing when i make a turn towards the dealer it sounds..because i've never used custonm poi's i do not know what the default actions should be when no route is selected?when i started all this what i wanted to do was have a list of all harley dealers so i could route to them if i wanted.i also thought when viewing the map the voice alerts and screen alerts when nearing a dealership would activate.i will work with this and see what it has done for defaults both with and without a route.i may want to set the distance parameter down to five miles.thanks for the help.

Great news

Great news that you have it working - somewhat. As to generating alerts, there are two basic types. The one you have probably set up is the "along the route" type which will trigger every time your vehicle is pointed toward the location and you are within the alert distance. This method is the most common used. Think of the alert working as if there were a box around the alert that extends about 75 feet on either side and is as long as the alert distance. Every time you enter the box, or start moving after a stop, the alert will sound. That gets very annoying if you have many stop lights or signs along a road going by the location.

The second type is a circular or radial alert which can be thought of as a circle drawn around the point with a radius equal to the alert distance. This is a TourGuide alert. The file, icon and sound are the same for both, only the name is different. All of them have to have TourGuide as part of the name spelled exactly as shown. These alert once when you enter the circle. TourGuides must have an audio file otherwise they will not function.

Either type of alert can be set using either a CSV or GPX file, For along the route alerts, just add a distance as the icon and sound file are optional. A TourGuide requires an audio file so only the icon is optional.

along the route or tourguide?

boxcar ! thanks for your response!this poi as well as smart phones is all new to me and at 62 yrs old and recently retired it is keeping me busy and very challenging.i have two poi folders i can access stored on my cpu.the route poi and the tourguide poi.each folder has all the gpx, bmp, wav, sox.exe, and poi loader.exe files included so i don't have to move them when running either program.i use the same gps for truck and motorcycle and as you can see thru my postings i want to be able to "go to" any harley dealership i select and also be alerted when i come near a dealership with or without a route running.it would also be nice to select the poi as a route when alerted whether a route is allready running or not.i have the tourgide route now on the gps set at 2 miles for proximity and learned that it only alerts once.does it alert every time you go in and out of the specific parameter for each poi?same question every time you travel near enough to a different poi? all the hd dealerships are listed in one gpx file and the alert i hope works for all of them the same? i beleave i have both the route and tourguide running correctly and can install the one that is the most useful to me. based on your above comments would the in route poi install be more usefull to me? how would the gps alert in route mode and view/non route mode?how about the distance feet to set on the parameter?is closer say 2 miles better than furter like 5 or 10 miles?i have limited theory on either poi route i select that's why all the questions. i appreciate your feedback because at this time i don't know enough on my own to make an educated decision. ps! i did have one of the files labeled dealers when the rest were dealer.glad you spotted it!

Here's an example:

Assume you have the RestAreasCombined POI file loaded as an ordinary POI with icon and audio and an alert set for 15,000 feet. You also have the HD dealers set up in an identical fashion. Assume you're traveling down the interstate on a GPS route with an upcoming Rest Area and that there's a HD dealer 2 miles off the highway requiring an exit ramp and a couple of mile's travel along a state route. In this case, you'll receive an alert 15,000 feet (as the road goes) before coming to the Rest Area and you'll not receive an alert for the HD dealer since it's not on your route.

Now do the above, but have the HD Dealer set as a Tourguide. You will now receive the Rest Area alert 15,000 feet (as the road goes) before coming to the Rest Area and you will also receive an alert when you're within a 15000-foot radius (think "as the crow flies") of the HD dealer, letting you know that there's a dealer you can visit that you would not otherwise know about.

From what you've said earlier, I think you want Scenario 2.

Here's another time TourGuides are desired. If you want "along the route" alerts for certain POIs, know that if the POI locations for the file are not the driveway to the POI but rather the building which may be set back from the road a couple hundred feet. Even running a route right past the entrance to this POI, you will not receive an alert if it's a regular POI, but if you have a 300-600 foot or so TourGuide radius set up, you will receive the alert.

Many of us here like and use the Rest Areas Combined POI file and in case you want it, too, know that it's been carefully set up with POI locations set to the location of the exit ramp to the Rest Area, and consequently, there is no need to use TourGuides for it.

My main use of TourGuides is for a "school zone" alert. The Factory has a large file called schools which identifies the location of 170,258 schools in the USA, but the POI locations are the school buildings, not the school crosswalks:

http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/us/schools

By using a TourGuide with a 600-foot radius, I get a School alert which I think of as a School Zone reduced speed alert shortly before coming to the School Zone, warning signs, crosswalks, and occasionally a police vehicle looking for folks doing over 15mph. Since the building POI locations are set back so far, the TourGuide is the only easy way to get an alert most of the time (with a few false positives for schools on adjacent streets, etc.) for upcoming schools.

One final thought: Alerts are fun to play with but most folks use them sparingly. I realize that there are folks who really want an audio alert for each nearby McDonald's or Starbucks, but for many others, the almost constant alerts in cities and even towns may get really old really quickly.

PS--I may have missed some of your question. If it's OK with you, can I make a suggestion? Try to break your paragraphs or lines of thought and add a blank space between them. At least for me, it's a lot easier to follow your thoughts.

Have fun driving up through New Glarus, Mt. Horeb, etc. even though I gather that the Mustard Museum has moved to MadTown some time ago. And if you will tell us, what's your thought of House on the Rock? From all I've asked, folks have strong feelings one way or the other about HotR with no folks saying it's just "OK." I must admit that I sorta like the place and have been there 2-3 times (the first being pre-Carousel, just to show how long ago it was).

Yup, HotR is not a "let's spend 90 minutes here" sort of place. It's a half-day minimum place to visit.

If at all possible, read American Gods before touring the place:

poi choice

i will set the gps up with the TourGuide install at a 5 mile parameter. 1.will it alert more than once for the same poi? 2. will it alert if a route isn't set? 3. what volume control varies the alert volume?4. if you get a poi alert can you select an on screen "go to" to that poi in a route or non route mode? i used to work as a crane oper. for a midwest utility here in wis. doing electric power maintenance and construction. i have travelled all over wisconsin during my 37 yrs and i can tell you the farther west of I-90 the better.we like to ride the kickapoo, wisconsin, and mississippi river valleys when we can. i was at house on the rock for the first time 3 yrs ago when my niece visited us from florida.it's something that's interesting but i only needed to see it once.there is a house in downtown springfield ill. that was remodelled by f.l. wright and if you ever get there that's worth seeing also.the remodel was $60,000 back at 1903? when the work was done. here's the link i hope! thanks for the help,i know i have alot of ? http://www.illinoishistory.gov/hs/dana_thomas.htm

How it works for me

My results:

1. No (maybe yes if you leave and re-enter the radius--maybe yes if you stop, then start again while within the radius)

2. Yes, my TourGuides (school zones) alert with or without running a route.

3. Not sure. Does your nuvi have multiple volume settings? You may need to test this yourself.

4. Not sure. I'll have to try it some day. My guess is yes. Even if no, you could pull up your Extras and start a route to it after hearing the alert--it'd certainly be the first POI shown in the list offered.

Ah, I suppose you've toured the various FLW buildings in Spring Green and Madison's Monona Terrace. I've done and enjoyed the Taliesin (one WI and one AZ) tours. There may have been a discussion here or somewhere else in the past about creating a FLW POI file but I think some expressed concern about IDing the privately-owned buildings.

TourGuide poi download. for nuvi 2455lmt

for my purpose the tourguide poi's seem to be the best alternative of the two ways poi files can be configured.it alerts within a specific radius of the poi and cancels the poi when you leave the radius.when approaching the set parameters a header above the map screen notifies of the poi as well as the sound notifier alerts.my notifier is a 8 second wav file of a harley going thru the gears.if you press the header with the notification info a go to screen apears to select the route to the poi.if you don't want to select the poi route when it appears on the main screen you simply press the back arrow out of the main screen and then select map.once the map reappears there will be a button on the top right side of the map screen that will let you go to the poi and the top header will show approaching intersection as before the alert.the go to button stays there till you leave the range set for parameters during the poi install.i assume all these poi features will also function the same way if you are following a route instead of viewing just the map. to obtain the above features i set up one folder that had the garmin poi loader.exe the sox.exe the wav file for the sound feature, the bmp file for the hd symbol icon instead of a small dot, and a gpx file containing a list of all the hd dealers in u.s.a. and canada.all the info to install the custom poi's i obtained thru the help of others here and info printed on this website. looks like this project is done and now i'm going to research uping the sound volume on my nuvi some. thanks for everyones help!

Your method works quite well for most poi's. Keep in mind that it wouldn't be good for a file like McDonalds which has a spot on literally every corner.

voice default volume

boxcar you are right! i set the range for alert to 5 miles will try that! now for my next task.i backed my files for my garmin up on my cpu and i am getting the same number files in properties in each folder when comparing the backup with the originals, however i am not showing the same amount of kb's stored in each folder when i compare properties ?i don't get it? i checked show hidden files and folders and unchecked hide protected operating system files before i started. everything that was showing in my gps memory file was transfered to my backup file yet the file sizes are different. the second problem is i tried to increase the volume on english-american jill and it states at the very end that "this file is set to read only" and the file appears to be a copy with a 1 behind it. it wont go thru ! any ideas?

I find it very difficult to understand what you are saying when everything is run together. The return key is quite useful. Not only can it be used to break a line, it can be used to separate thoughts. Try using a couple in your posts.

Now, I was right about what?

You state you are comparing files and the sizes don't match. What files are you comparing and how are you comparing them?

How are you trying to increase the volume of Jill?

The reason the file has a 1 behind it is you copied the file to a location where it already was so the file with the one is the first duplicate.

Fun with TourGuide

When we visited Vicksburg MS, we toured the riverfront and the historical buildings in the downtown area. Barbara is not very good at reading the map while I drive.
So.
I created a TourGuide of the area, with each POI having its own MP3 alert. That was loaded into my 295w. Then I created a route for my 1490lmt that followed the route described in the Visitor Guide.
I muted the 1490 and followed the Magenta line. The 295w announced all the landmarks as we approached. It was a large effort to do all of that, but we both enjoyed the tour.
