Garmin used with Bluetooth

Today after several years I finally paired my cell phone to my GPS and even made a phone call.

Now that I have done it, not sure what the REAL benefits are... wink wink

Mind you, I do have a Bluetooth device hanging out of my ear.

So please, very gently enlighten me.

HAPPY NEW YEAR To all of you wonderful people who take time to help us with our GPS issues and questions related to GPS's and backups etc.

So now tell us how it worked? You had to push an icon on the 465T to answer the call? right? and then again to hang-up? I'm guessing your unit is in the middle of the windshield, so you needed to reach for it and your eyes left the road?

I deliver new cars for dealers in my retirement job. Each time I get in a new car and plug in the GPS (1490), it finds my cell phone. No muss or fuss. For my purposes it is perfect. I used to miss calls coming in because of noise and now it rings and notifys me on the screen.
Also, a cell phone ticket cost me $150 (first offense).
Happy New Year to all…

Bluetooth

On my 3790 the Bluetooth is useless as far as I am concerned. Too awkward to make and receive calls.

I have a matching Blackberry earpiece for my Blackberry and all I need to do is to click for receive and click to hang up, also has voice command to make a call.

Both my units are useless also, works good but i need to take my eyes off the road, risk getting a ticket. I would do the ear piece before using these units. Luckily both my Fords are hands free voice activated.

I don't have a smartphone, but with my 2595 using voice control I give voice commands to find a phone number from a POI or from my phone's phonebook or by just saying the telephone number. The phone dials out and I don't have to touch anything. Just with a cheap Samsung prepaid phone (bluetooth, of course). Can't do that even with a good bluetooth headset. Maybe - if I had a $600 Iphone!

You are very witty...Yes I did have to push an icon to hang it up.. Lucky me I was in a parking lot/parked and experimenting and never took my eyes off the road. grin grin

Thank you so much for your response. smile

So it appears since I have a Bluetooth ear piece which is voice activated, the GPS function does not benefit me in this case.

Also my car has a builtin Bluetooth function which is voice activated and therefore eliminates the need for this GPS option for ME.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond with input.

Tried it on the 465T I had AND teh 560LMT

I've tried it on both the 465T and the 560LMT, and while it works, the audio is just terrible. The people I'm trying to talk to can hardly hear me over the background noise.

Why?

The microphone is in the GPSr, some 3 or 4 feet from my mouth!

Back to the headset with the microphone 2" from my mouth!

GPS No SWorse Than Headsets

I don't have any other bluetooth devices in my own car, so I use my Garmin frequently for handsfree calling. It's okay - but there is a lot of background noise and people claim it sounds like I'm talking in a barrel rolleyes

Many of my colleagues have Bluetooth headsets but most are not much happier with their devices... and some paid good money for their headsets.

Our Taurus has Sync and it seems to work quite well. We still use the Garmin rather than the in-car GPS, but not for handsfree calling.

Maybe a bit witty...lol. Point here is, that bluetooth
is no longer a viable feature in these units unless it's completely hands-free. It's become illegal in many places to use handheld devices while driving and essentially that's what these units are.

Not completely accurate.

Im most states with "handsfree" requirements, the driver is allow to push buttons to make and answer phone calls.

That was it for me until last week when I got a Bluetooth device that hangs out of my ear. Then I turned the GPS's bluetooth feature off.

Try that argument if you ever get stopped. Which state is it that Gps's are being banned or have bin already?
Read that in here somewhere.

Bluetooth volume

It would be nice if there were a separate volume control for the bluetooth function. Bluetooth seems to work nicely but isn't loud enough to be heard over the road noise in my pickup. If I turn it up louder to be heard during a phone call then the driving directions blast you out the door.

Ok, We are not privy to that one. We cannot answer our cell phones as in hold it in your hand while driving, can't push buttons on your gps. You have those laws in some states already. Good idea. All we need is to have them ban putting on Make-up and eating while driving also. wink

my 3790LMT works well with my two mobile phones. It shows call ID which was not on 1490.

Personally, I never use the nuvi's Bluetooth feature. It's much simpler to me to use a $15 Bluetooth headset than to fool with the nuvi which half the time can't hear me and I can't hear it.

Like it better now with my current phone in that my address book shows up and caller ID on the screen / my previus phones only worked for blutooth

COMPLETELY AGREE.. I was being pushed to use it by a friend and needless to say I have sent him several of the posts and told him to get a few bucks and buy Bluetooth ear piece.. But the GPS was not viable option.

I'm surprised to hear about that problem. I find the sound level of my TomTom GO LIVE 1535 to be essentially the same for my Bluetooth phone connection as it is for the audible directions, and I have been under the impression that Garmin hardware was pretty much comparable to TomTom hardware.

With best wishes,

Not correct

Speed2 wrote:

Here in BC we are allowed to answer a device pushing one button only. Of course, it still has to be hands-free, i.e. cell phone not in hand. A GPS would qualify for that MVA reg.

Could be better

I have a 2595. The volume of the calls through the Nuvi is too low without a lot of fiddling. You basically have to max out the phone volume and adjust the mixer to get a good --compromise-- between navigation volume and bluetooth volume. Then, when you disconnect the phone, you have to adjust the Nuvi back to normal and the phone earpiece volume back to normal. I know about the mixer and set this to high, turn off this, max out that. All they needed to do was get rid of the stupid e-books volume setting and give it to the bluetooth devices. How many people have books read to them through their Nuvi when they drive??? Maybe ONE??

I bought the 2595 for the bluetooth feature hoping to turn my phone into a hands-free device. I had the mistaken idea that it would be similar to the Ford Synch system I had in a previous car. (seamless operation). Forget it. It has a been a big disappointment and Garmin doesn't think anything is wrong with it.

Bluetooth experience

I have a bluetooth earpiece but I no longer use it. The loop is broken and it is uncomfortable for me after an hour or so. I'm not going to wear it constantly and would hate to mess with it after getting a call.

My three nuvis all have bluetooth and I use it in both vehicles. I have them set up with remote microphones and the nuvi output goes into the sound system of the car. So I have to switch the radio to aux to receive a call but that is quick. I can hear callers very well but they have some problem with me. I need to get more feedback to understand the magnitude of the issue. Originally the feedback was positive on this and I don't know if the expectations have risen or if the Garmin microphones have degraded. If it's the microphones, I plan to investigate the compatibility of other microphones with the Garmins.

My three nuvis are a 760, a 765t and a 885t. The latter is voice controlled so I can answer a call or make one without touching it. The 765t is mounted on a custom mount close enough to my steering wheel that I can touch it while still having my hands on the wheel (my hands aren't tiny).

There are no laws requiring hands free in SC but I think it's safer to do phone calls this way if you do them at all. If a call is involved (requires significant attention from me), I pull over or do it later anyway. Simple stuff if I'm crusing in light traffic I am comfortable proceeding while driving.

Jim

Well, knowing the state of the English language, I wanted to clarify to avoid a generalization. "Pushing buttons" might be misconstrued as any buttons.
