Standalone GPS with a wireless network data connection.

I have a Nuvi 1690, that is the one that comes with a cellular data connection.

It has an icon for google local and for whitepages.com. That is somewhat useful.

It's good, but pretty glitchy. I cannot recommend this unit because of the problems it has.

For example, I will be on the freeway stuck in traffic and no traffic icon on the screen. Turning the unit off by holding down the sole button on the top power cycles it and mostly it starts working then. The traffic and data may stay working for a few days or a few weeks, then I have to do it again.

So not very good.

Are there any other units with a data connection that anyone has used? I may replace this with one that actually works if any such thing exists.

my Nuvi765t is my last stand-alone device. It's all about the apps on the phones now...

Garmin nüLink! 1695.

Probably no better.

1695. I have a 1690.

I have to wonder whether it's any better, because my 1690 isn't very good. That review is over 2 years old.

Jim, do you have one?

That's what my post was about. If you have something with a data connection, maybe that works better than my 1690. The review says it's the same cellular edge connection my glitchy 1690 has. I guess from reading the review there are a couple of connected TomTom models but they didn't sound so great.

I agree, the days of standalone GPS units are numbered.

295w

I paid $62 for a 295w on a closeout. It has Wi-Fi only. It has a weather and a Google icon. Also an email icon and a browser. I do use my gmail account when on vacation. I can send geotag pics, using the built-in camera. The browser sucks, but I can log on to poi-factory to keep my windmill.
I don't recommend it, but it does work for me in a limited way.

Standalone GPS With A Wireless Network Data Connection.

Steevo (and the group),

I do not have either a 1690 or 1695, but I do have a Garminfone, which of course has cellular connectivity. As it turns out, however, I am now "kicking it old school" because I bought a used Garmin Nuvi 35o earlier this year mainly so that I can use it with an Argent Data cable to feed NMEA-0183 data to my Uniden Home Patrol HP-1 radio.

I have used the traffic feature of the Garminfone and it has seemed fine for me. I suppose you good pick up one used, like I did, fairly inexpensively and give it a try. Or, wait a few days, and see if, in fact, Garmin does have an off-network app after the first of the new year.
